Abstract

This paper examines the rising popularity of Hadhrami Arab preachers among Muslim youths in contemporary Indonesia. The preachers who claim their descent to the Prophet are popularly called as habib (sing.) or habaib (plr.). This study focuses on the late Habib Munzir al-Musawa and his sermon group, i.e. Majelis Rasulullah, as well as his young followers in Jakarta. Majelis Rasulullah is arguably the most popular majelis in Indonesia and has attracted tens of thousands of people in its public preaching. In order to explain its popularity, this study analyses the views and and experiences of his young followers on their participation and activism within the group. It explores both structural and cultural factors that drove young followers to participate in the sermon group. Borrowing Bayat’s perspective on Muslim youth and leisure, this paper argues that Indonesian Muslims participate in the habaib dakwah not only for spiritual shelter but also because they see the majelis as sites to express both their piety and their ‘youthfulness’ in the midst of uncertainty, discontent, and limited spaces for urban youth in Jakarta.

Abstract

Some da'i/mubaligh/celebrity preachers began to emerge in Indonesia with their own distinctive style and approach. This study assumes that habaib, gus, celebrity preachers rely more on entertainment performance than oratorical competence in attracting members of the congregation (followers). The results of this study show that (1) majelis shalawat has utilized new media and technology through the internet for self-promotion; (2) the promotional power possessed by the majelis shalawat is also supported by its leaders who generally have the sacred genealogy of the Hadramaut or Walisongo; (3) Shalawat practice is carried out by combining the dimensions of spirituality and musicality so that it can attract the attention of millennial youth in urban and rural areas.

Abstract

The increasing consumption of Islamic popular culture in Indonesia has marked the deepening Islamisation among the Muslim majority. Some scholars have observed the interplay between Islam and popular culture among Indonesian Muslim youths. However, only a few scholars have studied how a particular religious product has been debated and contested within a Muslim society. This article examines the conflicting responses over an Islamic song that describes romantic expression between the Prophet and His wife, Aisha. It focuses on three groups: popular preachers, progressive writers, and YouTube audience. This study found that while some Muslim preachers and progressive writers have criticized the song’s lyrics, most Muslim audience keep consuming the song and regard it as an ideal model of Islamic romance as expressed by the Prophet and His wife, Aisha. The various responses from the three groups represent the diversity of Indonesian Muslims with regards to Islam and popular culture. It also suggests that the Muslim consumers do not always follow the opinions of popular religious elites. The popularity of the song has resonated with the increasing aspiration among pious young Muslims who seek the basis of Islamic romance through the lives of the Prophet and His wife.

Abstract

This article examines the trend of hijrah among young Muslims by taking the case of the participants at the Nurul Iman Mosque, Blok M Square, Jakarta. They actively participate in regular Islamic learning held at the mosque and frame their participation as a form of hijra (migration) to the Salafi path. Our study draws on an anthropological approach by conducting participatory observation and in-depth interview. We explore the young Muslim motivations and initial introduction to Salafism. We examine how they view hijrah and how they practice it in their individual and social lives. The result of this research shows that the Salafi youths view hijrah as a process to become better Muslims. In practice, they have applied the teachings of Salafism in their everyday lives in terms of behaviour, dressing, and interaction. The narrations of the Salafi youths suggest that they have undertaken various forms of negotiations in practicing their hijrah
