Abstract

This paper presents a computer simulation model of the unity power factor uninterruptible power supply (UPS) topology using single-phase matrix converter (SPMC) that focuses on the switching integration for both rectifier and inverter operations. The proposed integrated switches capable of controlling the SPMC to operate as a rectifier operation to charge the DC battery during the normal operation and to switch the SPMC to operate as an inverter during power outage conditions continuously and instantaneously using a single power converter circuit. The use of a single power converter circuit can solve the typical UPS system that requires at least two separate power converter circuits, thus contributing to the higher power semiconductor losses and complicated control circuits. With the proposed circuit topology, it can improve the power density of the power electronics converter system resulting in low power losses. The active power filter (APF) function has been used to improve the supply current waveform to follow the shape of the sinusoidal reference current to be in phase with the supply voltage waveform, thus reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) level and improve the power factor. To verify the proposed operation, the selected simulation results are presented, and the proposed work has been done through the MATLAB/Simulink.

Abstract

This paper presents the conceptual study on grid-to-electric vehicle (G2V) wireless power transfer (WPT) using Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC). In this work, the SPMC is used as a direct AC to AC converter to convert the input supply voltage at 50 Hz frequency to the output of 20 kHz to meet the WPT switching frequency operation of the transmitter and receiver coils. The high frequency AC voltage of the receiver coil is then rectified to a DC form by using SPMC. Through the proposed system, the battery of an electric car can be charged wirelessly, thus removing the annoying wires of the conventional electric vehicle charging system. The reduction in size of the charging system, power losses and optimum efficiency are among the advantages of the proposed system. MATLAB/Simulink (MLS) has been used to simulate the proposed model. Selected simulation result are presented to verify the proposed work.

Abstract

This paper presents the Hysteresis Current Control (HCC) to improve the power quality of power electronic converters. The development of HCC was implemented using Active Power Filter (APF) function based on rectifier boost technique to control the range of upper and lower bands. Through this technique, the supply current waveform followed the shape of the sinusoidal reference signal, thus, the distorted input current waveform becomes sinusoidal and in the same phase with the input voltage. As a result, the THD level and switching losses can be reduced, thus improving the power factor of the power supply system. In order to verify the proposed operation, validation of the proposed HCC was done through MATLAB. Selected simulation results are presented.

Abstract

This paper presents the new generation of advanced gate driver circuit based on IR2110 device for a Single-Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) circuit topology that uses MOSFETs or IGBTs switches. The new generation of gate drive circuit uses less number of components, since a single IR2110 device can drive two power switches, thus reduce power losses and minimize the complexity of conventional circuit. An additional isolation of the upper and lower sides of IR2110 device features additional protection to the proposed gate drive system. As a result, the proposed gate drive circuit just uses four IR2110 gate drives in order to control eight switches of SPMC circuit, thus, solve the conventional bulky gate drive circuit problem in SPMCs operation.  This is in line with the international power electronic technology road-maps to reduce losses, cost, volume, therefore to raise up the power density of power electronics converters. Validation have been done through the experimental test-rig. As a result, such new theoretical enhancements can be used as a novel foundation of future high power density of SPMC circuit topology and in-line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) which were characterized mainly by advances in technology

Abstract

Solid-State Transformer (S2T) also known as Power Electronic Transformer (PET) is applied in various industrial fields compared to the conventional transformer due to it flexible voltage transfer ratio, high power density, and low harmonic distortion. This paper presents the S2T of Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) that acts as cyclo-converter. A 1kHz frequency was synthesized on the primary side of the transformer using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, whilst, the output converted by the SPMC that produces the 50Hz frequency. A part of AC to AC operation, the switching algorithm for safe-commutation technique is also presented to solve the commutation problem caused by the usage of inductive load. Minimization of size, losses and optimal efficiency are the advantages of this approach. The proposed model was simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink (MLS).

Abstract

This paper presents the verification of soft switching condition for three-phase AC to DC current injection hybrid resonant converter (CIHRC) with wireless power transfer (WPT) function. Details on the operation of current injection technique with the lossless zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition on shaping the high power factor of supply current waveforms are presented. With a suitable high switching frequency operation, the proposed resonant converter is capable to operate with ZVS conditions, thus, allowing reduction in the size of inductive and magnetic components. Selected results are also presented to verify the lossless ZVS condition for three-phase AC-DC CIHRC with WPT function.

Abstract

The development of active power filter (APF) using rectifier boost technique has been identified to compensate for the pulsating nature of the distorted supply current waveform of non-linear load. In this work, investigation is carried out on the operation of rectifier without any filters function. This is then extended to operate the rectifier converter with an active power filter function. APF function is implemented by enabling the closed-loop control using standard proportional integral control to rectify the distorted supply current to become continuous, sinusoidal and in-phase with the supply voltage waveform. Consequently, the total harmonic distortion (THD) level was reduced to meet the acceptable limit defined in the standard of IEEE-519 1992. The selected simulation results obtained from MATLAB/Simulink are presented to justify the proposed filter structure.

Abstract

This paper presents the computer simulation model of a grid to vehicle (G2V) wireless power supply using a single-phase matrix converter (SPMC). The proposed system uses the SPMC that operates as a direct AC-AC converter to convert the supply frequency of 50 Hz to reach 20 kHz output frequency. The use of 20 kHz frequency is suitable for wireless power transfer (WPT) operation in order to obtain higher power transfer efficiency between the transmitter and the receiver parts. An advanced of the proposed circuit topology can solve the conventional system for G2V circuit topology that uses multiple stages of power conversion system, resulting in high power semiconductor losses that could lead to low efficiency. In this work, multiple stages of the conventional "AC-DC-AC" circuits have been reduced to a single power conversion stage by using the SPMC circuit topology. The use of the proposed circuit topology can reduce the number of devices, thus reduce the semiconductor losses. A part of reducing the semiconductor losses, the proposed circuit topology could also improve the power density and efficiency of the power supply system. A computer simulation model using MATLAB/Simulink has been developed to investigate the behavior of the proposed system. Selected simulation results are presented to verify the functionality of the proposed system.

Abstract

This paper presents the dynamic analysis of the high-power factor three-phase ac to dc converter using current injection hybrid resonant technique in order to investigate the characteristics of the output voltage, line current, DC-link voltage and the resonant current of the proposed converter. The dynamic analysis have been developed based on a separate analysis of the rectifier line-frequency operation and at the resonant circuit high-frequency. Converter circuit analysis have been performed based on the operation at the fundamental frequency. The power balance relation method has been included in order to match the line frequency equation with the high frequency resonant stage equation. This analysis can be envisaged to be the heart of the small-signal model to design the output voltage regulation and maintain a high-power factor input line current of the proposed converter.

Abstract

In this paper, a comparative performance analysis of bridgeless boost and bridgeless buck converter for Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is presented. The performance of UPS application in terms of their efficiency is compared between the conventional diode bridge converter and both bridgeless converters. The input supply power quality is also been analysed by applying open and closed loop control techniques to the converter. The results show that the efficiency and the input supply quality of the bridgeless converters are significantly improved. UPS using bridgeless boost converter has better performance in all aspect compared to bridgeless buck converter. Aligned with that, the closed loop controller for the converter has also improved the efficiency and PF more than the open loop controller in performing the UPS system. All the analytical work was performed using PSIM software.
