Abstract

Learning a jargon is indeed one of the most challenging facets in any field of specialization such as nursing, especially to novices. As they face this challenge, they tend to develop adaptive techniques vital in their studies. Nonetheless, being a practical source of learning experiences, identifying these challenges and techniques is significant to improve the edification process in the discipline. Hence, the study aims to narrate and analyze the challenges and techniques of fifteen (15) Filipino nursing student participants in learning jargons. This qualitative investigation used narrative research approach to retell the stories of the participants as they overcome the language demands of the nursing studies. Findings reveal that the challenges experienced by the participants are: (a) learning jargons, (b) word unfamiliarity, (c) schema insufficiency, and (d) their phonetic and orthographic perplexities. To address those, they read references, search on the Internet, and rely on memorization and familiarization through recall techniques and with nursing interlocutors. The empirical exploration was done to provide meaningful insights and inputs to clinical instruction through the lens of language learning, benefiting both instructors and students of nursing.

Abstract

When Child Protection Policy (CPP) has been implemented, many teachers strive to maintain discipline and execute the curriculum through instruction. In the worst circumstances, lawsuits related to student discipline and classroom management have been filed against teachers. With this, the Philippine Congress created the bill Teacher Protection Act (TPA) primarily authored by Antonio L. Tinio, France L. Castro, and Ramon H. Durano VI. This act protects the teachers from students of bad behavior, abusing the legal empowerment from CPP. This shift leads to the conduct of this study. This phenomenological study aims to give insights about the bill (the phenomenon) and to gauge how the teacher participants perceive it (the perception). An interview is conducted among five (5) tenured teacher participants. They are asked to assess the house bill content and its future implications to provide insights to the teachers, other stakeholders, and the lawmakers. The investigation identifies that: (a) CPP is a hindrance to student discipline; (b) TPA must be immediately implemented; (c) the act is perceived to be a protection, but must be improved; (d) there are no clear guidelines to implement the act so far; (e) legal assistance in cases related to student discipline and classroom management is one of the best features of the act; (f) equality between students and teachers are perceived to be significant; (g) financial constraint is a consideration to be made to successfully implement the act; and (h) though the participants may single out some points to re-consider, they are still positive towards the act and what it can do for the welfare of the teachers. Keywords: Teacher Protection Act, Child Protection Policy, Student Discipline, Classroom Management. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jiip.v2i2.21786

Abstract

Language fossilization happens when learners do not progress anymore in certain features of the target language, especially in interlanguage learning context. this investigation sought to answer the following research questions: (a) What are the linguistic features in Korean language that the KFL Filipino learner participants are fossilized in? (b) Why do they arrive at such state of fossilization?. The qualitative study used narrative approach to identify the linguistic features that the KFL Filipino learner participants are fossilized in, and the reasons behind such language phenomenon, based on their learning narratives. There were twelve (12) KFL Filipino learners who participated in the study. Their narratives on KFL learning were analyzed, coded, and arranged to identify these fossilizations and the reasons behind. Findings reveal that the KFL (a) fossilizations are in sound-character correspondence, orthographical-phonological metamorphosis, language syntax, verb conjugation and suffixation in context, and vocabulary difficulty and (b) the reasons of fossilization are weak memory, language disorder, Hangeul character resemblance and  subtle differences, differences of L1 and L2 sentence patterns to Korean language syntax, lack of interest on sources of language exposure, discourse opportunities with Korean language speakers, and fear of language use due to uncertainty. These results contribute to improvement of foreign language instruction.
