Abstract

Abstract: The perceived needs of students learning EAP were analysed u-sing a questionnaire which investigated the subjects’ preference for particular topics and various modes of learning in relation to both the target and present situation. The target situation in the questionnaire was represented by items concerning study skills; while items concerning the present situation were oriented to the contents of the EAP course and its methodology and activities. The findings provide evidence for determining items for inclusion in an EAP programme. They also allow us to identify items as highly, reasonably or not at all recommended for inclusion.

Abstract

Presentation is a type of public speaking which requires special skills besides language competency. Presentation skill in English is a lesson or subject which can be found in some educational institutions in Indonesia. Besides presentation, public speaking can be in a form of speech, debate, and meeting. In public speaking, a speaker can face more than two people or even hundreds or thousands of people. While in ordinary conversation, the speakers and the listener called interlocutors are limited to only a few people. Presentation class is meant to improve the students’ performance in English public speaking. Feedback is usually given after a presentation activity is completed. In this case, the students who were trained were given feedback by the teacher. Feedback is given thoroughly on the language, content, and method of presentation. Research on feedback or assessment on oral presentation is underexplored. The present research is proof supported with empirical data which suggests that the role of feedback is important and statistically assessed as significant in making the later performance better. The main factor that determines the quality of a presentation is language skill. However, there are other aspects that are quite decisive such as the material or topic of the presentation and the presentation method.

The job ads analysed were those that appeared on well-known Indonesian newspapers which were published in the periods of May, June and July 2016. The present research also suggest that most of all professional position especially of administrative officers require their applicants to have English skills.Computer skill as well as communication skill have become the main supporting skills in applying for jobs. Despite the fact that  they are all Indonesian newspapers using Indonesian as the main language, a number of ads were written in English. Although such a proportion is still below the number of ads written in Indonesian, those English language ads show us how important English is to the applicants.   Keywords:job ads, English skills, applicants
