Abstract

This research aimed to find out and to describe the cultural content of two Indonesian Senior High School EFL textbooks namely Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII and Pathway to English 3 from the content of cultural information, the elements of surface and deep culture of Hall’s (1976) Iceberg theory and the dimension of intercultural communicative competence of Byram’s (1997). This study is a document analysis, and the writer used descriptive qualitative analysis. The data were collected by reviewing document and were analyzed based on the concept of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which covered data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion. The findings showed that the cultural information in both textbooks mostly presented by elements of surface culture. This research also showed that both textbooks had facilitated the three dimensions of intercultural communicative competence (knowledge, skill, and attitude), while the last dimension (critical cultural awareness) had not been achieved yet. In conclusion, the textbooks are still providing and facilitating the material in improving learners' language competency and cultural knowledge.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the cultural contents implied in an English textbook. A qualitative method was used in this research which analyzed this English textbook. The data source of this research was the English textbook for junior high school students entitled “Experiencing English”. The instrument used for collecting data was documentation in the form of textbook. The data were analyzed by using Byram (1994) framework to investigate the aspects of culture. In this research, the nine aspects that have to be included in the EFL textbook were analyzed. The result showed that stereotypes and national identity was more frequently used in “Experiencing English” textbook. This aspect represents the target culture stereotypes and national identity commonly focused on the British and American cultures. In the other words, “Experiencing English” textbooks frequently used target language culture. Notwithstanding this fact, the source/local culture values as drafted in the 2013 curriculum was still implied in the textbook as intended to enable the students to reflect their own culture in English.

Abstract

YouTube is one of the biggest platforms where people around the world can share informative videos. In YouTube, we can find the code-switching and code-mixing phenomenon easily. There are two dominant types of code-switching and code-mixing. The first type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 1: Indonesian YouTubers who live abroad, while the second type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 2: Indonesian YouTubers who live in the country.  This study aimed to find out which group switched and mixed language the most. The transcripts of the chosen YouTube video were the collected data. The qualitative method was used in this study, and the data were analyzed using document analysis based on the framework of Myers-Scotton (1993) and Muysken (2000). The result showed that Group 1 used code-switching and code-mixing the most, with a total of 288 pieces of data. Group 2 used code-switching and code-mixing with a total of 262 pieces of data. The most dominant type of code-switching used by both groups was intra-sentential, a total of 154 pieces of data. The less dominant type of code-mixing used was insertion, a total of 253 pieces of data.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate the effectiveness of using the reciprocal scaffolding technique on students’ writing skills and the students’ responses toward the implementation of the technique in the teaching and learning process at the second-year student of State Junior High School 1 Kutamakmur, North Aceh. The samples for this study were drawn in two customized groups using a random sampling approach with class VIII/b as the experimental group and class VIII/d as the control group forming a total of 52 students. The data for this study were gathered using a test and a questionnaire. The data were analyzed to determine the difference in the t-test scores between the two groups. The statistical results showed that the control group’s mean pre-test score was 50.15, which was lower than the experimental group’s 51.69. Meanwhile, the mean score of the experimental group in the post-test was 70.88, which was higher than the control group’s 58.34. The significant value for both groups in the post-test was 0.00, which is less than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It indicates that teaching writing while employing reciprocal scaffolding more effectively improves the students’ writing than teaching without it. In addition, the questionnaire that was presented to the experimental group revealed that the students gave positive responses toward the use of reciprocal scaffolding techniques in teaching writing.
