Abstract

In contemporary global politics, apparently Islam has become synonymous with conflict, instability, and violence. These negative labels in minds of many people reinforce the perception that Islam remain not to correlate with, even hinder, the quest for world’s peace, security, and human development, the sixteenth goal of SDGs. This paper aims to explore how Islam explains and understand human security by discussing Islamic values particularly on the concepts of societal security and sustainable development based on Indonesian Islamic society experience with special reference to Malang city. Reassessing how Islam serves as ideational factor for protecting people, this paper is an effort of enriching human security by incorporating religious paradigm, in particular Indonesian Islam, as an alternative paradigm in developing better understanding of the subject and development discourse.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate and analyze the democracy promotion carried out by Konrad-Adanauer Stiftung (KAS) in Indonesia. Our provisional findings on the case show that the hegemony of the North over the South is also perpetuated through political and economic assistance. Through the German political foundation of KAS, Germany seeks to foster a Western "better democracy" in Indonesia through several programs in collaboration with local actors. These "Freedom Agenda '' include training for civil apparatus and legal drafting training for national legislation. The Freedom Agenda carried out by KAS in Indonesia is associated with Germany's pursuit of democracy promotion policy. This study utilizes Neo-Gramscian Approach by Coxian Critical Theory (CCT) to investigate the role of KAS in maintaining the hegemonic order of Western Democracy in Indonesia through Cox's historical structure. By using library research, this study seeks to explain the reciprocal relationship between Cox's social forces in hegemony structure of Western democracy. Keywords: Konrad Adenauer Stiftung; democracy promotion; hegemony; social forces

Abstract

This paper seeks to address Erdoğan’s transnational repression towards Turkish citizens and Gülen-linked schools in Indonesia which are denounced as part of Fethullahçı Terör Örgütü/Fethullah Gülen Terror Organization (FETÖ)’s most vital source of funding. It is argued that the AKP-ruled government effectively transferred political hostilities from authoritarian Turkey to democratic Indonesia in micro-level targeting Turkish Gülenist teachers and other Hizmet Movement adherents.  In exercising extraterritorial coercive acts, the regime relied on institutional outposts such as the embassy, consulate, and mission. These proxy regime institutions played an agressive role in the repression of the Turkish diaspora, including active surveillance, nationality deprivation, and intimidation of the dissent’s family members. They also have tried to shut down, take control, or take over nine Indonesia’s Gülen-linked educational institutions to The Maarif Foundation (TMF). Nevertheless, in this meso-level (the Gülen Movement as a transnational network), The Turkish Government have failed to purge Gülen-linked schools whose their cooperation with PASIAD—which is associated with FETO—was terminated in 2015. Employing qualitative approach and data combined with content analysis, this study contributes in explaining Erdoğan regime’s coercive power across border which meets its middle power counterpart. One of the more significant findings to emerge from this study is that extraterritorial repressive acts were hindered by the national law and sovereignty of political opponents’ host country.        Keywords: transnational repression, authoritarianism beyond state, Gülen Movement, Indonesia’s Turkish schools

Abstract

International Politics studies have been dominated by Western discourse. The domination has also been affected Indonesian academic circles, which is also having so many difficulties to escape themselves from Western perspectives, especially from American School. Consequently, IR scholars usually analize Indonesia behaviours by using Western perspectives which have no roots in Nusantara history. This article will try to do the hung up ‘homework’, by doing an alternative discourse of power in International Politics studies from Javanese perspectives, by using Historical Sociology method. This article argues that the Javanese concept of power is ontologically and epistemologically different from the Western concept of power. Ontologically, in Javanese thoughts, anarchy along with its derivatives, balance of power, does not exist; epistemologically, power is concrete, homogenous, and beyond morality. On the other hand, in Western thoughts, international anarchy is the state of nature, and power depends on material accumulation and its utilization. The differences both on epistemological and ontological level have logical consequences to the foreign policy characteristics of the Javanese leaders. Keywords: Power, Absorption, Historical Sociology, Non-Western IRT

Abstract

Mainstream narratives on Indonesia's military operation in West Papua describe it to help the conflicting region achieve peace and prosperity. This hegemonic and widely held public opinion is more often used to justify the behavior of the Indonesian Government in West Papua. This research aims to offer an alternative perspective on the matter by looking at the narrative promoted and written by Free West Papua Campaign (FWPC) on their news reports about the Nduga Conflict in 2018-2019 from their website: freewestpapua.org. Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis examines the discourse created from the news coverage within the three-dimensional analysis, namely the textual, the discourse practices, and sociocultural dimensions. Results show that FWPC depicts Indonesia's military as exploiters of the indigenous Papuans. At the same time, FWPC also tries to build a sense of belonging to gain support from the international society and online activists.
