Abstract

This study aims to identify the utterances and to explore the language acquisition for 2.5 years old boy in its syntactical pattern.  The duration of this research is four months by observing and recording the words expression pronounced by the boy. Based on the finding, this boy firmly acquires the language mostly by nature (innate ability). However, the positive environment enables him to develop the child’s language fluency. Both nature and environment have important roles in the child language acquisition. It is in line with the theoretical frame work of language acquisition that in general language acquisition is shaped and influenced mainly by two factors: biological (innate ability) and environmental factors. Awhile the type of the utterances spoken by the boy aged 2.5 years old consisting of declarative 48 %, interrogative 29%, imperative 21%, and exclamation utterances 2%. In the syntactical pattern, the boy mostly speaks using the predicate utterances pattern (P), subject-predicate (S-P), then predicate-subject (P-S). The predicate (P) and subject-predicate (S-P) pattern of utterances are the most frequently spoken by boy. The boy is accustomed to and easily expresses his intentions with those two patterns that have represented a complete utterance according to what the boy intended.

Abstract

Slang can not only be found in daily conversation but it also can be found in literary work such as movies, for example in The Expendables 3 Movie which the characters’ use slang quite often in dialogues. The purpose of this paper is to study the function, type, and meaning of the slang terms used by the characters of The Expendables 3 movie. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method to analyze. After doing the analysis, the researchers found fifty-five slang terms and the details are as follows: (1) There are two types of slang, namely primary and secondary slang. The type which more often used is primary slang. (2) There are three types of functions: social, psychological and rhetorical functions (3) There are seven types of meaning of slang namely connotative, social, affective, collocative, conceptual, thematic and reflection meanings. Abstract

Acceptability of the translation is one of criteria in determining the quality of translation. The objective of this research is to describe the range of acceptability between the source and target language in the novel of Vivaldi’s Virgin written by Barbara Quick as well as to identify the translation procedure used by the translator. This research is translation study with descriptive qualitative method. While the data of research is sentences taken from both the source text and the target text containing word, phrase and sentence. From the assessment, it can be concluded that translator is capable enough to translate the sentences from the source text into the target text. A translation can be understood as a transfer of massage from one language to another. Translation is an attempt to convert from one form to another to retransmit messages from the source text to the target text. Finding of this study shows that 164 data taken randomly 110 (67%) are acceptable, 33 (20%) less acceptable, and 21 (13 %) unacceptable.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze and to get a deeper understanding toward metaphor translation, the equivalence between the source and target text as well as to investigate some factors that cause the equivalence including method, procedure, and semantic structure of translated metaphor. Metaphor as the object of this research was taken from a novel, Vivaldi’s Virgin written by Barbara Quick. The novel was translated into Indonesian: Gadis-gadis Vivaldi by Abdullah Al-wazin and published by Maroon Books Publisher in 2008. Each metaphor had different methods and procedures for its translation.  A method used by the researcher on this translation text study was content analysis through descriptive qualitative method. There were 162 metaphors taken from this novel and classified into three categories: (1) metaphor translated as metaphor, (2) metaphor translated as a simile, (3) simile translated as a simile. Based on this data, the researcher found 110 text of metaphors translated into metaphors, 21 metaphors translated into simile and 31 of similes translated into simile. Each metaphor which was made up of different collocations has different image and equivalent. However, the reseach proved that this work had enought equivalent particularly between the source and target text. Translator of this novel mostlly used modulation and preposition method which was very much close to the naturalness of the target text.Keywords: Translation, metaphor, simile, equivalent.

Abstract

This research investigates the language attitude of university students in South Jakarta toward the heritage language and language maintenance by employing a questionnaire and an interview. The study also tries to find out students’ efforts in maintaining heritage language and difficulties dealing with heritage language maintenance. Based on the research study most of the students have positive attitude that heritage language maintenance is very important. The challenges with heritage language maintenance are caused by many factors such as the environment, parent’s policy, lack of exposure to learn and to practice the heritage language in speaking, listening, and reading. By taking the case study approach, the present study found that students whose parent from mixed culture tend to neglect heritage language. They prefer to use Indonesian language or other foreign languages instead of heritage language

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know and to analyze the translation of tense in a novel as well as to see the level of equivalence between the source language and target language. The writer also wants to find out the procedures of translation used by the translator. This is a qualitative descriptive research that produces a data consisting of sentences of the present and the past form. Based on analysis of the translation for both the present and past tense has a very high level of acceptance between the source language and target language. While the translation procedure for this novel, the translator uses a lot of transposition, modulation, and adaptation. The writer also grouped sentences in verbal and nominal categories as well as justification of translation equivalence. The writer took 10 sentences randomly as the object of research analyzed by giving information, semantic analysis, and procedure of translation.

Abstract

Running the trading or business in general is aimed at gaining the long-term profit. However, the trading made merely to earn profit without taking into account the service as well as the consumers’ satisfaction will not be sustainable. The objective of this research is to socialize the business in the manner applied by the Prophet Rasulullah Shollallahu’alaihi Wassalam. The research method is analytic descriptive. Data or information obtained is sourced from the books, journals and various sources relevant to this journal topic. In running the business, Rasulullah always upholds the honesty, ethic, has never reduced the scale and size, free of riba (usury), does not practice the monopoly, is consistent in maintaining the mandate, is tolerant and pays the wages of his assistants before their sweats are dry as well as pays attention to the customers’ satisfaction. The smart Rasulullah SAW in running the business always focuses on the market shares he masters in. He is able to penetrate the new market, and very superior in conquering the hearts of the customers who will buy and use the goods he traded.

Abstract

As new approach of language teaching, translanguaging has become a popular topic and widely debated in applied linguistic for the last few years. This study explored educators’ perspective about the use of translangaging as practical pedagogy in EFL classroom in relation to their position that play a significant role in shifting educational practices. The research data was taken in the form of quantitative and qualitative using questionnaires and interview with participants by involving 15 English educators of Higher Education in Jakarta. The findings revealed positive outlooks on the use translanguaging as pedagogical practices in EFL that gave them opportunities rather as weaknesses like lack of proficiency. In addition, the educators also expressed various perceptions about language as separated system, language mixing, and language as single system that support each other.

Abstract

 This research study aims to investigate and identify the equivalence level of translation from textbooks using a qualitative approach with content analysis. As qualitative research, this study presented an analysis of the strategy made by the translator on how English text (Pretext for Mass Murder) was translated into Indonesian. The research study was started through observation of the source language that involved reading, identifying, classifying and evaluating the data. The collected data were analyzed descriptively under four main headings of equivalence level proposed by Mona Baker, namely in word level, above word level, grammatical level, and textual level equivalence. The sampling data of this research study is 150 sentences taken randomly, which are classified as word level (N=58, 39%), above word level (N=45, 30%), grammatical level (N=35, 30%), and textual level (N=12,8%). The findings demonstrated that the translator used different strategies creatively to find out the closest meaning of translation between the source language and the target language. In addition, word level equivalence was found to be the most dominant data compared to others. Keywords: translation, equivalence, the source language and target language.

Abstract

The research study investigated the students’ voices on online English learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study was taken in quantitative and qualitative approach using the questionnaire and interview in which the data were taken through an online with descriptive analysis. The research involved 46 participants who learned online English at higher education in Jakarta. Based on the result data, indicated that respondents who have been learning online English for one semester accepted moderately. Moreover, a few of them argued that online English learning during the Covid-19 as the best alternative to mitigate the spread of viruses in Education cluster. Participants showed big concern with health problem and made it as priority for their life decision in emergency situation of Covid-19 pandemic. Although the implementation of online English learning still has challenges and difficulties for students, they have optimism and slowly accustomed to use technology in language learning and becoming autonomous learning.
