Abstract

Code-mixing phenomenon which appears in different settings and contexts creates interest for investigation. This research is aimed to analyze the elements of code mixing in Friday prayer sermon, the reasons underlying speaker to mix code, and the responses of audience. This is a qualitative research by implementing content analysis. Based on the analysis, the elements of code mixing in the sermon were in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The reasons causing speaker mixing the code are making the sermon easy listening, making his sermon accepted, understanding listener that old man preferred local language in sermon, matching sermon with social condition, making himself accepted, making ease to deliver the sermon, making sermon more communicative, and making the sermon get in touch with the listeners. Then, based on the questionnaires which were given to 25 respondents, there were 22 people understood the sermones. However, 10 people of them said that the sermones should be delivered in Bahasa Indonesia only. They thought that the sermon would be more easy listening, more understandable, and created more comfortable listening. On the other hand, they thought many listeners were the outsiders of the village. Hence, it is concluded that phenomenon appears to consider context, goal, and audience.

Abstract

This research outlines how the interaction among Javanese women takes place in traditional markets from a linguistic stand point. It aims primarily at describing the politeness principles in the speech of Javanese women taking place at Karangploso traditional markets in Malang city, East Java Province. There is evidence that women dominate the interaction of selling and buying that occurs in traditional markets considering their role in the domestic domain. The speech act of Javanese women in traditional markets in Malang city was analyzed based on Leech’s politeness principles. These principles consist of six maxims namely generosity maxim, tact maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, modesty maxim, and sympathy maxim. The Javanese women’s speeches were classified on the basis of all of the maxims’ characteristics. The method used is a qualitative method in accordance with Bodgam and Tailor theory. The results showed that all maxims of politeness principles were found in the interaction involving women in traditional markets in Malang city. More importantly, the use of high Javanese language as a means of communication containing the realization of politeness principles may reduce the probability of verbal abuse occurring in the interaction among Javanese women in Kaarangploso traditional markets in Malang city.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop a card game to scaffold the obstacles of EFL students to compose descriptive text. The research and development design were applied to achieve the UNO English card game through modifying the conventional UNO cards with the descriptive text English material. The participants were the eight students joining the Writing I course in Banking Department in a public Islamic university in Indonesia. The results showed that the application of the UNO English card through game-based learning model could minimize the EFL students’ descriptive writing errors as well as increasing their interest joining the EFL class. Therefore, comparing the students works in both pretest and posttest, it was known that the EFL students’ descriptive writing scores had increased due to the treatment of UNO English card application. This study unveils demand for EFL teachers’ creativity to elevate the EFL class outcome through more interesting activity and material development.
