Abstract

This study deals with the conversational implicatures on Indonesia Lawyers Club program on TV One. The objectives of the study are (1) to observe the types of maxim violation potentially cause conversational implicature, (2) to ascertain the maxim violation that dominantly causes conversation implicatures, (3) to give the reasons of the dominant type of violation that causes conversational that causes conversational implicatures on Indonesia Lawyers Club program by using Gricean Theory of Cooperative Principle. The study is conducted by qualitative content analysis. The findings of the study are, (1) there are four types of maxim violations as maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner, and maxim of relevance, (2) the dominant type of maxim violation appeared is maxim quantity and (3) the reasons of the dominant type deal with, to show up pain and core of the problem to the audience, to save one face, to defend certain group and blame the government.Keywords: conversational implicature, cooperative principle, maxim violation, Indonesia Lawyers Club

Abstract

Language serves as the communication tool whether it is verbal and non-verbal ways.  To understand the language intention, we have to know the function, then it is called as the language function. In this study, the language functions were conducted in Public Service Advertisements which entitled Gerakan Literasi Nasional (GLN). The objectives of the study were to find out the language functions presented in the advertisements of Gerakan Literasi Nasional and to describe the purposes of those advertisements in it. The theory proposed was Jakobson`s language function and the research design applied was Qualitative Content Approach (QCA). The data were obtained from two sorts of advertisement which had the same theme in spite of different sources. One was from SMK Budi Warman 1 Jakarta Timur and another one was from public government by Kemendikbud. The data were analyzed by Miles and Huberman`s concept within the procedure of discourse analysis. The findings of the study were 1) there were four types of language functions as referential, emotive, conative and poetic functions, and 2) the purposes of the advertisements in GLN were mainly to persuade and inform the viewers about the importance of literacy to improve their knowledge.

Abstract

This study discussed the use of code-switching among the late adolescents in social media Facebook. The purpose of the research was to know the types of code-switching used among the late adolescents in social media Facebook by applying Poplack theory. The other purpose was to reveal the reasons for using such types of code-switching in social media Facebook by applying Hoffman theory. The descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The data of the research were analyzed using Miles and Huberman method. The results of the research were: (1) there were three types of code-switching used by the late adolescents in social media Facebook, (2) some reasons in using code-switching were being emphatic to others, the use of interjection to gain attention, the use of repetition for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing identity group, softening the request or command, lexical needs, and using  satire. Satire was mostly found in this research.Keywords: code-switching, late adolescent, social media
