Abstract

This study was conducted with the purposes to identify the self-esteem of Lillie in the Pokémon Sun and Moon video games as presented in the plot and the motives behind her self-esteem development. This study was based on qualitative research and used psychological approach. Therefore, this study focused on the psychological phenomenon of self-esteem. The data are the dialogues that convey Lillie’s self-esteem and the motives behind her self-esteem development. The data sources are Pokémon Sun and Moon video games and two other sources as data triangulation. The theories of self-esteem by Maslow and Branden were used to analyze the self-esteem of Lillie. The results of this study have shown that Lillie has low self-esteem in the exposition up to the rising action. Shortly after rising action starts, she has developed the high self-esteem. The Lillie’s high self-esteem remains up to the falling action and resolution. The first motive behind her low self-esteem development are the problems between she and her family. Lillie lost her family in the past. Secondly, it relates with her own self alone. She lacks of strength and has an unfavorable idea about Pokémon Trainer and Pokémon battle. These problems thwart her esteem desires and develop her low self-esteem. The motives behind her high self-esteem are related with her problems but resolved. She finds the supports from various characters along her journey. She gains independency and confidence. She fulfills her wish to save Nebby. Her thwarted desires are satisfied and her high self-esteem is developed then.

Abstract

This research discussed the issues of discrimination occurred toward the black female characters in The Hidden Figures movie. It aimed to describe the types of discrimination and to explain the impacts toward the black female characters. The researcher used the qualitative research as the method and feminist literary criticism as the approach of this research. The data derived from narrations and dialogues in the movie script related to the research questions. The findings of this research showed that there were two types of discrimination portrayed in the movie; those are derogation and denial. The findings also showed that the impacts of discrimination toward black female characters emerged in psychological and economic fields.

Abstract

This research analyzes prejudice in The Hundred Foot Journey Novel. The novel explains about prejudice which is done by French towards Indian. This research aims to reveal rejections generated from prejudice that happened to Indian and to describe the behaviors of Indian when they experienced prejudice. This research uses Gordon Allport’s prejudice theory and then the prejudice generated several rejections: antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attack and extermination. Prejudice also generated behaviors from the victim of it, in this case behaviors became the response. The theory of behavior is also based on Gordon Allport which divided into extropunitive and intropunitive behavior. The method of this research is qualitative research with mimetic approach. The data are narrations and dialogues that related to prejudice and also rejections from prejudice. The data are analyzed by using Allport’s theory and then the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. The result of this research is four out of five rejections from prejudice are found in this research. There were antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. Meanwhile in this research, extropunitive was the most dominant behavior as the response from the Indian.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher shows the forms of oppression which occur toward female character named Lakshmi. The five faces of oppression is a theory that is explained by Irish Marion Young. The kinds of oppression toward women can be found in Lakshmi’s character of Sold novel. This form of oppression somehow called as injustice action that adhere toward people or group because of several reasons, such as class, race and gender. The source of data of this study are collected from Patricia McCormick’s Sold novel and the data for this study is the evidence of oppression toward Lakshmi. The oppression is divided into exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. The results of this study are, Lakshmi got five faces oppression from group or person. Based on that analysis, the researcher concludes that the oppression toward women can be done by men also women. Therefore, the researcher believes that the oppression toward women is not happens because of gender that men is superior rather than women, but oppression can be happened due to power of domination and class.

Abstract

This research focuses on the journey of Magnus Chase’s character as the mythical hero in The Sword of Summer novel by Rick Riordan. This research has two purposes. The first is to identify the stages of Monomyth that appear in the journey of Magnus Chase’s character in The Sword of Summer novel. The second is to identify kind of Mythoi of The Sword of Summer novel. The researcher applied Joseph Campbell’s theory of Monomyth and Northrop Frye’s theory of Mythoi to answer the research questions. There are two results of this research. First, Magnus Chase’s character undergoes fifteen out of seventeen stages that proper with Campbell’s Monomyth. These fifteen stages are The Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Supernatural Aid, The Crossing of the First Threshold, The Belly of the Whale, The Road of Trials, The Meeting with the Goddess, Woman as Tempress, Atonement with the Father, Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, Refusal of the Return, The Crossing of the Return Threshold, Master of Two World and Freedom to live. Second, the kind of Mythoi of The Sword of Summer novel is The Mythos of Summer: Romance. That is because Magnus Chase undergoes all the phases of The Mythos of Summer: Romance. These phases are the emerge of the hero, the innocent youth of the hero, the completion of an ideal, the theme of maintaining the hero’s integrity, the innocent youth of the hero and the end of the adventure. Penelitian ini berfokus pada perjalanan karakter Magnus Chase sebagai pahlawan mitos dalam novel The Sword of Summer karya Rick Riordan. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan. Tujuan pertama adalah mengidentifikasi tahapan Monomyth yang muncul dalam perjalanan karakter Magnus Chase dalam novel The Sword of Summer. Tujuan kedua adalah mengidentifikasi jenis Mythoi dari novel The Sword of Summer. Peneliti menerapkan teori Monomyth yang dipopulerkan oleh Joseph Campbell dan teori Mythoi yang diperkenalkan oleh Northrop Frye untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Terdapat dua hasil dari penelitian ini. Pertama, karakter Magnus Chase mengalami lima belas dari tujuh belas tahapan yang sesuai dengan teori Monomyth dari Joseph Campbell. Lima belas tahap ini adalah The Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Supernatural Aid, The Crossing of the First Threshold, The Belly of the Whale, The Road of Trials, The Meeting with the Goddess, Woman as Tempress, Atonement with the Father, Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, Refusal of the Return, The Crossing of the Return Threshold, Master of Two World dan Freedom to live. Abstract

The hero characters, like most people know, are just like Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, who gain superpower, stronger than ordinary people, and fight monsters to save the world. However, there are also the hero characters that do not gain superpower. This study concerned on finding out the differences between Flik of A Bug’s Life and Flint of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies as the ordinary hero characters by using Campbell’s hero’s journey theory. This study was a qualitative research with content analysis approach. Data of this study were words including narrations and dialogues taken from A Bug’s Life and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movie scripts. This study showed that Flik was a dependent hero character, while Flint was an independent one. In Flik’s case, he was considered as the dependent hero character due to his natural trait as the ant colony to put the colony above everything else. While, Flint was considered as the independent hero character based on his reasons of doing the adventure: to fulfill his own desire of being acknowledged by his dad and to show his attractive side to the girl that he fell in love with, Sam Sparks. To conclude, regardless the fact that both Flik and Flint were included as the ordinary hero characters, this study had shown they still had their own version of hero characters.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Literature and life is an artful way to sensitize on various complex issues and uses educative power that literatures have. The study is trying to consider the role of literature in moral education. The research problems of this study is what are the moral development of the main character, Sebastian Wilder portrayed in La La Land movie? The researcher includes six stages of Lawrence Kohlberg’s Moral development theory which have three levels; pre-convention level, convention level and post-convention level. Each levels have two stages; stage one obedience and punishment orientation and stage two individualism and exchange for pre-convention level, stage three good interpersonal relationship and stage four maintaining the social order for convention level, and stage five social control and individual rights and stage six universal principles for post-convention level. Six stages of moral development theory can help the researcher analyzed how moral development on Sebastian Wilder is in La La Land movie by Damien Chazelle. In this study the researcher find six stages of Lawrence Kohlberg’s moral development that portrayed the main character, Sebastian Wilder. The first stage, is when Sebastian thinks the advice from the big people that he should do is only just an advice. The second stage is he loves himself as he being alone and loving what he is doing on his own. In the third stage, he tries to make a real effort to get a good behavior to keep his relationship with his friends or his family always good. The fourth stage is he thinks that he must to organize the things from the social order to keep his life better. The fifth is when he gets a steady job and he must do everything with his new band. The sixth, he changed his future because he think that he must to be a successful person and get the popularity the same with the other musicians. Keywords: moral development, main character, La La Land movie  ABSTRAK Sastra dan kehidupan adalah sebuah seni untuk membuat kepekaan di berbagai macam permasalahan yang kompleks dan menggunakan kekuatan pendidikan yang terdapat dalam sastra. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mempertimbangkan peran sastra dalam pendidikan moral. Permasalahan penelitian ini adalah; apa saja perkembangan moral yang ada pada pemeran utama, gambaran Sebastian Wilder pada film La La Land? Peneliti memasukkan enam tingkat pada Teori Perkembangan Moral oleh Lawrence Kohlberg, yang mana memiliki tiga level; pre-convention level, convention level dan post-convention level. Di setiap level memiliki dua tingkatan, yang mana teori tingkatan-tingkatan tersebut membantu peneliti menganalisa bagaimana perkembangan moral pada Sebastian Wilder di film La La Land oleh Damien Chazelle di analisis. Pada penelitian ini peneliti mendapatkan enam tingkatan Teori Perkembangan Moral oleh Lawrence Kohlberge pada gambaran pemeran utama, Sebastian Wilder. Tingkatan pertama, saat Sebastian berpikir bahwa nasihat dari orang-orang penting yang seharusnya dia lakukan itu hanyalah sebuah nasihat yang tidak harus dilakukan. Tingkatan kedua adalah bagaimana dia merasa nyaman akan kesendiriannya dan menyukai apa yang dia lakukan untuk dirinya sendiri. Pada tingkatan ketiga, dia mencoba untuk membuat sebuah usaha yang nyata untuk mendapatkan perilaku yang benar dan baik agar dapat menjaga hubungan antar teman dan keluarga. Tingkatan keempat, dia memikirkan untuk lebih mengatur kehidupan sosialnya menjadi lebih baik. Tingkatan kelima saat dia mendapatkan kerja tetap dan melakukan semua hal untuk band baru yang sedang dijalaninya. Tingkatan keenam, dia mengubah masa depannya karena dia berpikir bahwa dia seharusnya menjadi orang yang sukses dan mendapatkan popularitas yang setara dengan musisi pada umumnya. Kata Kunci: perkembangan moral, tokoh utama, film La La Land

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types and the purposes of conversational implicature uttered by all characters in In The Heart of The Sea movie by using pragmatics approach. The design of this research is qualitative research employing content analysis approach that focused on textual investigation. The data of this research is utterances, which contains conversational implicature spoken by the characters in that movie. This research has one data source which is the movie script of In The Heart of The Sea movie. The data of this research are categorized as types of conversational implicature are analyzed based on Grice’s theory (1975) and the purposes of conversational implicature used theory by Brown and Levinson (1978). The result of this research shows that two types of conversational implicature are found in the utterances of the characters in that movie, they are particularized conversational implicature and generalized conversational implicature. Five purposes of conversational implicature also found in this research, they are to protect speaker itself, to show power and politeness, to give information, to entertain the audiences (humorous) and to have lack specific information.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the characters of the Dunbroch Royal Family members which consists of Merida, Queen Elinor, King Fergus, Harris, Hubert and Hamish  as well as their role in the plot of the Brave (2009) film. There are two data sources in this research. First is the Brave (2009) film, and the second is the script of this film itself. The data then categorized by using Reams’s characterization. The role of the characters the connected wirh Kenney’s plot development. The result of this research show that Dunbroch Royal Family member characters consist of four different kind of characters and all of them except for King Fergus have a significant role in the plot of the story.

Abstract

ABSTRACTRejection issue is one of the realities in society that can be reflected in literary work. It happens when one individual does not accept other individual and not showing any kindness such as loving and caring. Someone that was rejected by other people usually being excluded and ignored by others. Meanwhile in social life, people need to be accepted and acknowledged by others so they will feel appreciated. Rejection unconciously happened in our society. One of the literary works that represent rejection issue is a novel by Ann Morgan entitled Beside Myself. The rejection issue in that novel can be analyzed through Helen’s character. This research belonged to qualitative research with content analysis as its data analysis technique. This research focused on rejection issue that appeared in Helen’s character through the narrations and dialogues of the characters in the novel. This research used IPARTheory from Ronald P.Rohner as the reference in analyzing Helen’s character. The result of this research showed that Helen received all the rejection acts from the people around her, especially her mother. Helen has eight out of nine rejection effects as the result of being rejected by people around her.  Keywords: Acceptance, Rejection, IPARTheory, Beside Myself novel  ABSTRAKIsu penolakan merupakan salah satu kenyataan di masyarakat yang dapat direfleksikan dalam karya sastra. Isu ini terjadi bila seseorang tidak menerima seorang yang lainnya dan tidak menunjukkan keramahan terhadap orang tersebut, seperti rasa cinta dan kepedulian. Seseorang yang ditolak oleh orang lainnya biasanya dikucilkan dan diabaikan oleh orang lain. Sementara, dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat, manusia butuh untuk diterima dan diakui oleh manusia lainnya sehingga mereka akan merasa dihargai. Isu penolakan ini secara tidak sadar telah terjadi di kehidupan masyarakat kita. Salah satu karya sastra yang merepresentasikan mengenai isu penolakan adalah novel karya Ann Morgan berjudul Beside Myself. Isu penolakan tersebut dapat di analisis melalui karakter Helen. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menganalisis isi novel sebagai teknik analisanya. Penelitian ini fokus pada isu penolakan yang muncul dalam karakter Helen yang dapat diketahui melalui narasi dan percakapan para tokoh di dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan IPARTheory dari Ronald P.Rohner sebagai acuan dalam menganalisa karakter Helen. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Helen menerima semua tindakan penolakan dari orang-orang di sekitarnya, terutama ibunya. Helen memiliki delapan dari sembilan efek penolakan sebagai hasil penolakan dari orang-orang disekitarnya. Kata Kunci: Penerimaan, Penolakan, IPARTheory, novel Beside Myself
