Abstract

Wood samples  of  15 species  measuring  5 x  5 x  30 cm  were treated  with 5 percent  of BFCA preservative by hot and cold  soaking.  Hot  soaking  period  was respectiuely 1  hour,  3 houn  and 5 hours, with  temperature  range  of 65ᵒC ­-  70ᵒ C, followed by  cold  soaking  for  24 hours. The  test  result  of  experiment, after taking  both  retention and penetration requirements into  consideration  for wood uses  under  roof,  and  in the  open  air both  without   ground  contact,  showed  that  nine Wood  species  could  be satisfactorily  treated  under   the  experimental  conditions.   However, it is important  to  note  that  one  of  the  nine species,  i.e.  benuang   (Octomeles   sumatrana)  fulfilled  the  requirements   for  wood   usage  under   the roof  only  without ground   contact.  The preservation schedule proposed  for  nine wood species is also presented in this paper.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi toksisitas campuran seng khlorida-dikhrornat (SCD) dalam mencegah serangan rayap dan bubuk kayu kering perusak kayu. Kayu yang diberi perlakuan SCD dengan metode vakum tekan. Setelah melalui pengkondisian, contoh kayu diuji ketahanannya terhadap serangan rayap tanah, rayap kayu kering dan bubuk kayu kering. Hasil pengujian terhadap rayap kayu kering memiliki mortalitas 100% dan derajat proteksi 100 belum tercapai pada konsentrasi 3,5% dan retensi 20,56 kg/m3. Mortalitas dan derajat proteksi tertinggi rayap tanah ditunjukkan pada konsentrasi 0,7% dengan retensi 4,35 kg/m3. Derajat proteksi tertinggi bubuk kayu kering pada konsentrasi 1,4% dengan retensi 7,47 kg/m3. Derajat proteksi tertinggi pada percobaan kuburan bergantung pada konsentrasi larutan, 3,5% dengan retensi 18,19 kg/m3 pada 12 bulan menunjukkan hasil yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan konsentrasi di bawahnya.

Abstract

Wood preservative penetration and retention on five wood species using hot and cold bath process was studied. Wood samples measuring 5 cm x 5 cm x 60 cm were immersed in BFCA preservative solution under temperature of 70° C for nil (control), one, two and three hours then cooled for a day.The result indicates that red meranti (Shorea platycados V.Sl .) is more permeable compared with other species (bangkirai, bungur, damar laut and kapur). In red meranti, one hour immersion in hot preservative yields penetration which conforms with the SKI C-bo-008 Standard for wood building, whereas in other 4 species, the treatment does not seem to be more superior. compared with cold immersion method.

Abstract

This paper  deals with  a study  on a momentary  dipping  of freshly  sawn wood  for short periods  in a solution  of  33% boric  acid equivalent (BAE)  and  33% BFCA  preservative  at ambient   temperature,   followed by  one,  two,  three  and  four weeks  of  diffusion storage.  Boron  penetration were  then  calculated  and analyzed.  Results  of the study  reveal that  timber species  and  preservatives   do  not  any  significant   effect,   but  diffusion periods   show  highly  significant   effect to  boron penetration.   Boron  penetration   seemed  is normally   with  the  increas in diffusion storage period. Diffusion  storage of four weeks  for  all timber   tested  in  this  experiment  shows  relatively  good  results, so that  diffusion storage periods  for  four weeks  may  be recommended.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah penerapan pengawetan bambu baru ditebang dengan bahan pengawet senyawa boron. Delapan belas batang bambu dengan panjang dan diameter yang bervariasi dipungut dari Ciapus di Bogor. Batang bambu yang baru ditebang dimasukkan ke dalam larutun bahan pengawet senyawa boron secara terpisah masing-masing selama satu, tiga dan lima hari.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa retensi bahan pengawet dapat ditingkatkan dengan cara meningkatkan waktu pengawetan dan konsentrasi larutan yang digunakan. Hubungan antara waktu pengawetan dan konsentrasi yang digunakan menunjukkan perbedaan yang nyata. Retensi maksimum sebesar 7,64 kg/m3 dicapai dalam waktu lima hari dengan konsentrasi larutan 10%.

Abstract

A full cell treatment of four wood species with 5 and 7 percent copper-chrome-arcenic solution  was conducted using small samples  of 18-25 cm in diametre and 30 cm long. The cross cut-ends of the samples were coated to prevent penetration of the preservative  through  these parts. The preservation  process were held for 2 and 4 hours at a pressure  of 8 and 10 atmosphere.                                                                 The result of the test revealed that four wood species (keluntum, medang, manggung   and  puspa) are recommended for  power poles servation. The treatment shchedule  proposed  for four wood  species  is presented in this paper.

Abstract

The utiliization of wood for cooling tower in Indonesia tends to increase and has become more important. Wood as material for cooling tower has been applied commercially in several developed countries such as New Zealand,USA and Japan. While in indonesia it has just been started in 1981 after the establishment of Kamojang Geothermal Power Station Unit 1. This paper deals with some experience in treating keruing wood (Dipterocarpus spp.) as material for cooling tower by vacuum-pressure impregnation. The result shows that keruing is easy to treat. In other to meet the retention of 24 kg/m3, the concentration of the solution must be at least 6.25 percent and absortion of 384 liters of preservative per cu.m.

Abstract

A study on the treatability of eleven wood species was carried out using hot and cold soaking  treatment  methods  with Koppers Formula  7 as preservative. Specimens measuring 50 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm were soaked  in five  and ten percent preservative  solution for  a duration  of one, two, and three hours and then allowed to cool while the timber is still soaked in the liquid.  The penetration  and retention  were recorded. From this study  the following   conclusions  could  be drawn:The treatment schedule and concentration  of solution  have a highly significant  effect  on the preservative  penetration  and retention. Much higher retention  was shown  when longer hot soaking  and higher concentration  were employed.

Abstract

Impregnation    under  pressure  is  the  most  effective  way  of  applying  preservative   to  timbers,   but  not  all species can be treated  effectively  using  the  method.   Air-dried  timbers  of  5 cm  x  5 cm x  100 cm in dimension   were impregnated   with preservative   used  for  constructional   purposes.   Part of  wood  samples  was presteamed.   Prior to  the preservative   treatment both  groups  were reconditioned    to  the same  moisture  content   as the  reference   material  (air dried).Retention  and  penetration   figures  have  increased as presteaming   was applied.   The  result revealed  that  two  timbers preserved   met   the  standard   requirement.    The  preservation   schedule  proposed   for  the  timbers  is presented   in this paper.

Abstract

The result of cold soaking treatment of ten wood species is reported  in this paper.  Five wood  species are recommended  for housing (agatis, balsa, damar kaca, karet  and  kemayau), whereas  the  other  five  species  (begontoi, belangeran, kenari I, kenari  II and  mahoni) could  not  meet  the  spesification. Solution concentration of Koppers  Formula  7 preservative  used  was 10  percent  with  soaking period  of one, three and five days. The treatment  shchedule  proposed  for five  wood species  is also presented in this  paper.
