Abstract

ABSTRACT: Based on historical researches concerning ecumenical movement in Indonesia, it could be found that the formation of the Council of Churches in Indonesia (DGI) which later changed its name to the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) can not be separated from the role of Calvinist or Reformed church leaders and theologians at the time. In discussing about stimulus and urgency for unity among various churches in Indonesia, we can see that the views of several Reformed figures was very significant. Their opinions were effected by Calvinist thinking that chracterized their churches. This article is trying to describe the views of several Indonesian Reformed theologians before and after the formation of DGI/PGI regarding ecumenicity. Therefore we can say that Calvinist thinking has played very valuable role in the ecumenical movement in Indonesia. KEYWORDS: ecumenicity, ecumenical movement, church unity, Indonesian Reformed Theologians, Calvinist thinking.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to explore how the Protestant Church in Papua (GPI-Papua) and the Protestant Church at West Indonesia (GPIB) run their mission in the world. As representatives of the church on the earth, both churches carry the same mission. As the church they are called and sent by God to fulfill their duty which is to serve the world. The method developed in this study is the document study which mneans that the study focuses on some important documents of these churches. This study found out that the presbyterial-sinodal system which is adopted by the GPI-Papua and GPIB will create or run congregation as a family. Based on this system, the church should be developed as as family of God through which the church reflects the meaning of being a church. By being a family of God, these churches should not focus more on institutional or structural and organisation aspects of the church. In contrary, the two churches should develop functional church leadership as the basic character of the church leadership.

Abstract

Many researches have been done concerning the contexts and the factors which effected the theology and character of John Calvin. At least three contemporary scenes should be considered as the dominant context when speaking about Calvin. First, the Rome from which the Reformer seceded; second, the Anabaptists; and third, the humanists especially Renaissance humanism. This essay looks at the core of Renaissance humanism, namely its emphasis on the Greek and Latin classics as the chief subject of study and as unrivalled models of imitation and in thinking and even in actual conduct. After a brief glance at Calvin’s education, this essay attempts to explain the influence of Christian French humanism on Calvin in his ethics and theology, and its ongoing relevance to our contemporary situation in Indonesia today. Keywords: Calvin, humanism, classical writings, theology, character, sense of discipline, discipline humaniores ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Banyak penelitian telah dilakukan mengenai konteks dan faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap teologi dan karakter Yohanes Calvin. Kata-kata kunci: Calvin, humanisme, tulisan-tulisan klasik, teologi, karakter, rasa disiplin, disiplin humaniores.

Abstract

The concepts of curses and blessings are discussed not only in the Bible but also in the lives of church members today. Congregation members in Nalahia (of the Protestant Church in the Moluccas), as a research locus, always associate the concept of curses and blessings with traditional practices and daily life. Pilgrims who carry out their customary obligations will be blessed, while those who are negligent will be cursed. This study aims to reconstruct contextual theology regarding the understanding of curses and blessings from church members. Using qualitative research methods, data were collected from interviews with congregation members and analyzed dialectically with various contextual theological literature. The results of this study indicate that members of the local congregation who are still influenced by multi-layered cultural traditions understand their relationship with God and their ancestors in layers. Expressions of faith in a cultural context open reflections on the meaning of God's creations in the reality of human life, including in cultural practices. Contextual theology does not fall from the sky but is always dialectical with the context that produces the theology, including the cultural context.
