Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted all aspects of our population. Ethical dilemmas related to the care of patients in the COVID-19 pandemic need to be rapidly addressed by multidisciplinary bioethics committees, with the development of policies and procedures to assist providers in making difficult allocation decisions. Recent ethical considerations regarding allocation of scarce resources, such as mechanical ventilators, have been proposed. These can apply to other disciplines such as nutrition support, although decisions regarding nutrition support have a diminished potential for devastating outcomes. The nutrition support professionals are pivotal in assessing the patient’s overall condition and need for, if any, nutrition interventions.

Abstract

Covid-19, a disease caused by a novel coronavirus, became a major global human threat that has turned into a pandemic. Pandemics present difficult logistical, medical and ethical challenges to the medical workforce. Pandemics require incorporating public health ethics with clinical ethics.

Abstract

Obesity is an epidemic that is about to overwhelm the economic and health care structures of society. Obesity is a complex medical condition that has roots in genetic, environmental and social exposures that should not be attributed lack of willpower any more than other diseases. A supportive clinical setting for patients with obesity optimally includes comfortable, accessible waiting and examination areas with weight-sensitive reading materials; specialized medical equipment, specially designed tables and surgical equipment; and sensitive weighing procedures, including a private weighing area. Patients with obesity should be treated similarly to other patient populations that require additional care or have increased risks of adverse medical outcomes.

Abstract

Micronutrients are represented by vitamins and minerals and are present in a wide variety of foods. Each of these nutrients performs specific functions that are essential for the health of our cells and their harmonious functioning. Data suggest that many people have an inadequate daily intake of micronutrients, even when nutritious food is more easily available. It has since been established that the complex, integrated immune system needs multiple specific micronutrients, including vitamins A, D, C, E, B6, and B12, folate, zinc, iron, copper, and selenium, which play vital, often synergistic roles at every stage of the immune response.
