Abstract

Background: Adequate fluid consumption and hydration status of students become a special concern because being dehydrated by just 1%-2% can impair cognitive performance. The objectives of this study were to assess the daily fluid consumption, and analyze the correlation of fluid consumption and other associated factors with hydration status of medical students in Universitas Sriwijaya. Methods: A total of 93 medical students in Universitas Sriwijaya were recruited to complete a 7-day cross-sectional study. Subjects were asked to complete a self-administered 7-day-24-hours fluid record and provide first morning urine sample on the last day. Gender information was collected. Physical activity was evaluated by self-administered long version of IPAQ. Body mass index was calculated using body weight and body height measurement. Urine specific gravity was determined by urinometer. The 7-day-24-hours fluid record and 1-day-24-hours urine specific gravity were calculated and analyzed. Results: Majority of the subjects were well hydrated, while 10.8% were slightly hydrated, 6.5% were moderately hydrated and 9.7% were severely dehydrated. The average of daily fluid consumption was 1789.28 (989.3-2930) mL. Coefficient correlation of fluid consumption from beverages with urine specific gravity was -0.651 (p=0.00) by Pearson correlation test. The hydration status showed no association with gender, physical activity and body mass index. Conclusions: Most subjects in this study were well hydrated. A strong association was found between fluid consumption and hydration status. It was feasible to use daily fluid consumption from beverages to predict hydration status.

Abstract

Home enteral nutrition (EN) at dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital (RSMH) was rare. Its acceptability and effectiveness were not known. This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of home EN compared with EN for hospitalized patients as the control group. We conducted a preliminary quasi-experimental study with anthropometric measurements every seven days until the twenty-eighth day. There were 15 subjects for each group. The acceptability rate of home EN was 100%. The mean of initial weight for height (WHZ T0) between the control group and home EN group was -2.83 (2.49) vs -2.46 (2.44). The mean of WHZ at T7 was -2.51 (2.29) vs -1,99 (2.49). There was an increase in each group (P=0.009), but the difference was not significant (P=0.584). Complications occurred in 13.3% of subjects in the control group and 66.7% in the home EN group. There was a significant WHZ change affected by complications, but the change was not significant (P=0.186). We concluded that home enteral nutrition had the same effectiveness as in the hospital.

Abstract

Introduction. One of the largest components of breast milk is human milk oligosaccharides (HMO). These components play an important role in the infant gastrointestinal tract based on their prebiotic effect. Lactulose is one of synthetic oligosaccharides, categorized as prebiotic; its effect resembles breastmilk in altering intestinal microbiota composition. Method. A systematic review on the effects of lactulose addition to infant formula. Results. Our search indicates that lactulose can improve the consistency and frequency of feces to resemble the stools of breast-fed infants. Adverse effects of mixed prebiotics are diarrhea, bloating and vomiting. Conclusion. Further research is still needed. Routine addition of lactulose in infant formula is not yet recommended.
