Abstract

Background: Problem Based Learning (PBL) has been applied by Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret Maret University Senate as a model of learning in Medical Education Program since 2007. One of the aim of PBL is increasing students Self Directed Learning (SDL) ability. SDL is a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, to diagnose their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, select and implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes. SDL can be measured and represented by the level of Self Directed Learning Readiness (SDLR). One of the advantage of this research is evaluating PBL implementation in Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. So, the goal of this paper is to know the difference of self directed learning readiness between first semester and seventh semester medical students in Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University (UNS). Methods: This research was an analytical observational research using cross sectional approach and had been done in December 2014 in Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University (UNS). The sample of this research were 386 of first and seventh semester students selected based on restriction criteria applying simple random sampling technique. Data was obtained using Self Directed Learning Readiness Scale-Nursing Education (SDLRS-NE) in Indonesian version and analyzed using Independent T-Test with SPSS 20.00 for Windows. Results: The mean of self directed learning readiness for the first UNS semester medical students was 149.09 18.346 and for the seventh semester UNS medical students was 147.41 15.856. This research shows that there was not any significant difference of self directed learning readiness between two studied groups. The Independent t-Test shows p = 0.337. Conclusion: This study found that there was not any significant difference of self directed learning readiness between the first semester and the seventh semester UNS medical students. Abstract

Background: Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) contains flavonoid and pottasium that have diuretic effect. This research aimed to find out the diuretic effect of yellow seeded-watermelon extract on the male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental study using Posttest Only Group Design, done at Laboratory of Setia Budi University Surakarta from November 2014 to January 2015. The research subjects were 30 male white rats of Wistar Strain with age of 3 months old and 200 grams in weight. Samples were taken by purposive sampling. Watermelon was gotten from Jurug Fruit Market Surakarta. Before the treatment, rats were adapted for 5 days and fasted for 18 hours but still provided with drinking water. Yellow seeded-watermelon extract was given orally. The negative control group (KN) was given distilled water 3 ml and the positive control group (KP) was given hydrochlorothiazide 0.3 mg/200 gr of body weight.Test group I (KUI), II (KUII) and III (KUIII), in order,were given yellow seeded-watermelon extract at dose 35 mg, 70 mg and 140 mg per 200 gr of body weight. Rat urine volume was measured every 4 hours for 16 hours. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney test. Results: The average of rat urine volume of KN, KP,KUI, KUII and KUIIIwere 1.247 ml, 5.987 ml, 2.315 ml, 3.357 ml and 4.570 ml, in order. The Mann Whitney test showed there were significant difference among KN, KP, KUI, KUII and KUIII at the first, second and third four hours. Conclusions: Yellow seeded-watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) extract has diuretic effect on the male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The highest diuretic effect was at dose of 140 mg/200 gr of body weight. Keywords: Citrullus lanatus extract, diuretic effect, hydrochlorothiazide

Abstract

Background: Inflammation is a local protective response which is potentially hazard. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains flavonoid which has anti-inflammatory effect. Existing research has used ginger rhizomes as its material, whereas flavonoid in ginger leaves is bigger than the rhizome. This research aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of ethanolic extract of ginger leaves in albino rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental with posttest only controlled group design. This research was conducted at Setia Budi University. The subjects were 25 albino male rats 3 months old, weight 150 gr, which were taken by purposive sampling. The subjects were divided equally into 5 groups randomly, which negative control group (KN) were given normal saline and positive control (KP) were given indomethacin whereas test group 1 (KU1), test group 2 (KU2) and test group 3 (KU3), in order, were given 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg of ethanolic extract of ginger leaves per 100 gr of body weight orally. Inflammation induction was done by injection of 0.05 mlcarrageenan 1% of sub plantar. Rats foot edema volume was observed every hour for 6 hours after injection. Statistical analysis of the data was done including one way-Anova, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney test. Results: The greatest inhibition of edema volume was at the 6th hour, KP (74.07%), KU3 (74.07%), KU2 (66.67%) and KU1 (48.15%). The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences among 5 groups with p=0.002 (p<0.05). The Mann-Whitney test showed p=0.068 for KP- KU1, p=0.429 for KP- KU2 and p=0.910 for KP-KU3. Conclusions: The ethanolic extract of ginger leaves has anti-inflammatory effect in albino rats equivalent to indomethacin on the sixth hour after carrageenan induction. Abstract

Background: Surgical site infection was defined clinically, namely the existence of purulent discharge around the wound or wound cellulitis in operation. Coconut husk are known to has tannin and flavonoid as antibacterial properties. This study aimed to determine In Vitro effect of coconut husk (Cocos nucifera L.) ethanol extract towards the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus from surgical site infection. Methods: This research is an experimental laboratory (post test only control group design) with a non-probability sampling technique namely consecutive sampling. Research conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory FK UNS and sampling conducted in the Microbiology Laboratory Dr. Moewardi Hospital. The independent variables are the coconut husk ethanol extract at a concentration of 1%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. Subjects were Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus of surgical site infection standardized with Mc Farland 0.5. Test sensitivity on Muller-Hinton medium diffusion method with antibiotics cefoperazone/sulbactam and vancomycin as a positive control and DMSO 2% as negative control. Research results are tested with the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: Coconut husk ethanol extract cant inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli but can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Based on the results of the Kruskal-Wallis test that at least there is a significant difference in inhibition between the two treatment groups (p <0.005). The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that there were significant differences in inhibition (p <0.05) in all treatment groups, except in the group with the inhibition of the extract concentration of 40% with 60% extract concentration did not reveal any significant differences in inhibition (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Coconut husk ethanol extract cant inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli but can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus from surgical site infection by In Vitro. Abstract

Background: Alkaline water has high pH level and work as antioxidant that could repair the damaged pancreatic beta cells caused by alloxan. This research aimed to know the effect of alkaline water on blood glucose in diabetic white rats induced by alloxan. Methods: This was an experimental research with pre- and post-test group design. The subjects were thirty Wistar male white rats selected by a simple random technique. They were divided into 2 groups, control group (aquadest group), and treatment group given alkaline water dosed 23 ml perday. Blood glucose were measured by stript test at the first day as GDP 1, at the fifth day after induced by alloxan as GDP 2, and the last, after treatment at the twelfth day as GDP 3. The data were analyzed by Anova test followed by Post Hoc Test using SPSS for Windows Release 20 program. Results: This research showed that there was significant difference of GDP 3 betweenaquadest and alkaline group (p=0,00) by independent t test.There was no significant difference between GDP 1 and GDP 3 both group by dependent t test. Conclusion: It concluded that alkaline water was able to decrease the blood glucose level on diabetic white rates induced by alloxan. Keywords: alkaline water, blood glucose level, antioxidant
