Abstract

Shifting from real classes to online classes ideally does not decrease students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) in a language classroom since it is an indication of successful language learning in a virtual class. Given the crucial of promoting students’ willingness to communicate in English online class, the present study analyzed the patterns of university students’ WTC in a synchronous virtual class. With this purpose in mind, 43 students taking English for general purposes were chosen as the sample in this study. To gather the data of students’ WTC patterns, the online class using zoom application was observed by administrating the Coding scheme developed by Chao and Philp. The patterns of the students’ WTC were analyzed and classified into six categorizes based on the scheme. The results of the study reveal that the occurrences and patterns of students’ WTC are affected by different task types given by the lecturer. Thus, it is expected that education practitioners construct virtual learning design providing various activities so that students’ WTC in an online classroom can be triggered and enhanced.

Abstract

The present study analysed university students’ critical thinking ability on their listening skills. With this purpose in mind, 25 students taking listening subject participated in the study were chosen as the sample of this study. To gather the data, the essay test of critical thinking skill developed by Facione were administered to the participants after they had listened to related audio of conversation and/or monologue. The obtained data were then analysed using holistic critical thinking scoring rubric. The results showed that the core critical thinking skill of interpretation possessed by the students is 61% categorized as low, analysis skill is 65% classified as medium, inference skill holds 68% ranked as medium, evaluation skill gets 56% categorized as low, explanation skill is 54% classified as low, and self-regulation is 68% classified as medium. To add, the total average of students skill related to critical thinking is 62% and is categorized as low. Considering that students in higher education is faced with complex problem and decision making, education practitioner are called to develop critical thinking in language teaching particularly listening skill. Thus, the development of critical thinking in listening would contribute to successful communication.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing altruism character in the three English textbooks of senior high school grade X, XI, and XII. Using content analysis, words, phrases, and clauses presenting altruism in the reading text, dialogue, and tasks were examined. The study revealed that in the English textbook of grade X, the altruism aspect indicating ‘pro-social behavior’ and ‘environmental care’ could be frequently found in reading text, dialogue, and task. However, other altruism aspects such ‘giving empathy’ missed in the reading text and ‘reducing inequality’ does not appear in the reading text and dialogue. Meanwhile in the grade XI, ‘giving empathy’ and ‘pro-social behavior’ occur in dialogue and task yet cannot be identified in the reading text. Moreover, ‘environmental care’ only shows up in dialogue and task, while ‘reducing inequality’ is nowhere to be found. In the grade XII, ‘giving empathy’, ‘pro-social behavior’ and ‘environmental care’ could be identified in the reading text, dialogue, and task. Unfortunately, ‘reducing inequality’ aspects only occur in the task. The inconsistent altruism character maintained in the English textbooks used in grade X, XI, and XII of senior high school displayed the missing opportunity to shape students’ altruistic behavior. Considering that senior high school is the stage where students start developing the ability to think logically about abstract ideas, altruism character should be inculcated in the development of English learning material in relevance to students’ intellectual and emotional level.
