Abstract

Participants' emotional reactions are strongly influenced by several factors such as personality traits, intellectual abilities, and gender. Several studies have examined the baseline reduction approach for emotion recognition using electroencephalogram signal patterns containing external and internal interferences, which prevented it from representing participants’ neutral state. Therefore, this study proposes two solutions to overcome this problem. Firstly, it offers a modified weighted mean filter method to eliminate the interference of the electroencephalogram baseline signal. Secondly, it determines an appropriate baseline reduction method to characterize emotional reactions after the smoothing process. Data collected from four scenarios conducted on three datasets was used to reduce the interference and amplitude of the electroencephalogram signals. The result showed that the smoothing process can eliminate interference and lower the signal's amplitude. Based on the three baseline reduction methods, the Relative Difference method is appropriate for characterizing emotional reactions in different electroencephalogram signal patterns and has higher accuracy. Based on testing on the DEAP dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 97.14, 99.70, and 96.70% for the four categories of emotions, the two categories of arousal, and the two categories of valence, respectively. Furthermore, on the DREAMER dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 89.71, 97.63, and 96.58% for the four categories of emotions, the two categories of arousal, and the two categories of valence, respectively. Finally, on the AMIGOS dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 99.59, 98.20, and 99.96% for the four categories of emotions, the two categories of arousal, and the two categories of valence, respectively. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2022-06-06-03 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The convolution process in the Capsule Network method can result in a loss of spatial data from the Electroencephalogram signal, despite its ability to characterize spatial information from Electroencephalogram signals. Therefore, this study applied the Continuous Capsule Network method to overcome problems associated with emotion recognition based on Electroencephalogram signals using the optimal architecture of the (1) 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Continuous Convolution layers with values of 64, 128, 256, and 64, respectively, and (2) kernel sizes of 2×2×4, 2×2×64, and 2×2×128 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Continuous Convolution layers, and 1×1×256 for the 4th. Several methods were also used to support the Continuous Capsule Network process, such as the Differential Entropy and 3D Cube methods for the feature extraction and representation processes. These methods were chosen based on their ability to characterize spatial and low-frequency information from Electroencephalogram signals. By testing the DEAP dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 91.35, 93.67, and 92.82% for the four categories of emotions, two categories of arousal, and valence, respectively. Furthermore, on the DREAMER dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 94.23, 96.66, and 96.05% for the four categories of emotions, the two categories of arousal, and valence, respectively. Finally, on the AMIGOS dataset, these proposed methods achieved accuracies of 96.20, 97.96, and 97.32% for the four categories of emotions, the two categories of arousal, and valence, respectively. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-01-09 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

One of the advantage of e-learning method is the flexibility of embedding audio-visual materials, however whether this goal-irrelevant stimuli would distract the users instead and hinder their performance is generally unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of emotional distraction (ED) on the declarative memory performance. The study was conducted using the within-subject experiment on 38 students aged 18-21 years (20 males). Declarative memory was measured using a Word-Pair Association (WPA) task. ED is given using the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS) and International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) grouped based on their valence (neutral, positive, and negative). Measurement of physiological responses was done by measuring Galvanic Skin Responses (GSR), and Electroencephalography (EEG) with Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA) index. Result: significant difference on the WPA score of which Positive is lower than Neutral condition (p = 0.011), but only on the group which the positive block were presented first. From the GSR data, significant main effect of the order of experimental block regardless of the ED valence (p < 0.001; F = 16.045), the first block elicits significantly higher GSR amplitude compared to second (p < 0.001; t = 4.94) and third (p = 0.001; t = 3.90). Meanwhile, the FAA index showed no significant difference (p = 0.654; F = 0.433).

Abstract

In Indonesia, adequate screening instruments for the early detection of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in primary school students is not available prior to the study. We aimed to assess the Indonesian version of the Conners 3 Teacher Rating Scale (Conners 3-T) in an Indonesian setting and assess the prevalence of ADHD in primary school children. The study participants comprised 314 primary school students aged 6-12 years old. Conners 3-T was translated from English to Bahasa Indonesia and back-translated into English. Those students suspected of ADHD were further diagnosed by a senior child psychologist for diagnosis.

Abstract

Performance pressure and caffeine consumption, a common combination in daily life, have both been shown to affect cognitive performance. However, previous research has not fully elucidated the extent to which the effects of caffeine and performance pressure impact cognitive function, especially working memory. This study aims to examine the possibility that caffeine can enhance working memory performance under pressure. A total of 61 participants aged 18 to 32 participated, divided into four groups. Experiment-based data collection was conducted with a single-blind design. Working memory was measured by Modular Arithmetic Tasks with the OpenSesame program. All participants were asked to perform arithmetic tasks and arousal levels were measured using the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). The findings revealed no evidence of an interaction effect of caffeine intake and performance pressure on working memory (F= .632, p= .431,hp2= .012). Given the prevalence of caffeine intake prior to facing high-pressure situations, the consumption of a cup of coffee does not improve cognitive performance as many would expect. However, caffeine intake had a stabilizing effect on the skin conductance response values during performance under pressure. Clinical psychologists can use a daily dose of caffeine as an alternative intervention or preventative measure to help patients reduce performance pressure-related anxiety.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes to our lives. One of the prominent changes is the offline learning model changed to online. This change may have an impact on the effectiveness of the learning process and students’ understanding of the knowledge conveyed by the lecturer. So, a further analysis needs to be done. In this study, students’ perceptions of online learning during the pandemic were explored. The goal was to find out what students think and feel while participating in online learning during pandemic so that in the future lecturers are able to create or choose the more effective learning models for their classes. This research was conducted using the phenomenological method on several students’ majoring in health science who were undergoing school from home (SFH). Data collection was carried out using the depth interview method by telephone and WhatsApp chat according to the flexibility of the participants’ time. The finding of this research showed that e-learning programs carried out during the pandemic actually put more mental pressure on students’ and decrease their learning motivation, especially in early days of the program. This happened due to the lecturer and university lack of readiness in carrying out the program.
