Abstract

This paper investigated analysis of supplementary reading material development using a genre-based approach which is in line with the school curriculum. It employed the procedures: need analysis, supplementary materials development, expert validation, material revision, material testing, and subsequent material revision. The data were collected by using questionnaires, interview, syllabus analysis, and field note. The analysis shows that the supplementary reading materials entitled Reading for Islamic Learners were completely developed. The supplementary reading materials were developed on student’s need and school recommendation, in line with standard competence and basic competence from syllabus. They contain interesting reading passages featuring Islamic messages, delivered through colorful pictures. In addition they have various reading strategies and accompanied by  evaluation tools covering: multiple choice and essay.

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the effectiveness of two stay and two stray in enhancing  students’ speaking ability. The paper is derived from the research result conducted among the 35 English department students of FKIP of University of Bengkulu. Classroom action research design with 3 cycles was applied to encourage students’ speaking skill. Observation checklist, fieldnote and speaking test instruments were used to capture students’ progress (reflection and evaluation) . Observation was done to see how well the strategy was understood and implemented by the students. Fieldnote aimed at jotting down success and constraints of the strategy usage and tes instrument was administered to evaluate the grading and scoring development during the first, second and third cycles. Reflecting and evaluating were conducted at the end of every cycle. Based on observation and fieldnote that the students’participation were getting increased in every cycle. Besides, the average score and grade at the end of 3 cycles were getting improved. Mean score of cycle 1 was 59.00, cycle 2 was 65.00 and final cycle was 72.00. It can be concluded that two stay and two stray strategy boosted speaking ability for English department students of FKIP of Bengkulu University.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in increasing students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research was quasi experimental design. The sample of this study was 30 students of X hospitality accommodation, selected by using the purposive sampling method. They were divided into two classes, 15 students as experimental class who were taught using Question Answer Relationship Strategy and 15 others as control classes who were not taught by using QAR Strategy. In collecting data, the researchers provide tests twice, namely pre-test and post-test. Before conducting the post-test the, researcher gave three treatments in the experimental and control classes with different teaching. The instrument used in this study was 20 multiple choice questions about narrative texts that had been declared valid. The data obtained from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the t-table was 1.76 and the result of the t-test was 2.690. It revealed that the t-test is bigger than the t-table (2.690> 1.76). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In brief, QAR Relationship Strategy can be one of effective ways in teaching reading for tenth grade students of SMK Yadika Model Lubuk Linggau.

Abstract

Proses belajar dan mengajar yang berkualitas baik dalam maupun diluar kelas merupakan  salah satu tanggung  jawab seorang guru (pendidik) profesional.  Profesionalisme guru ini sesuai dengan amanat undang-undang No 14 tahun 2005  pasal 1 bahwa guru adalah pendidik profesional dengan tugas utama mendidik, mengajar, membimbing, mengarahkan, melatih, menilai dan menevaluasi peserta didik pada pendidikan anak usia dini jalur pendidikan formal, pendidikan dasar, dan pendidikan menengah. Pada pasal 6 bab II disebutkan juga bahwa kedudukan guru dan dosen sebagai tenaga profesional bertujuan untuk melaksanakan sistem pendidikan nasional dan mewujudkan tujuan pendidikan nasional, yaitu berkembangnya potensi peserta didik agar menjadi manusia yang beriman dan bertaqwa kepada tuhan yang maha Esa, berakhlak mulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mandiri, serta menjadi warga negara yang demokratis dan bertanggung jawab. Kedua pasal diatas menunjukan bahwa tugas dan tanggung jawab seorang guru yang profesional amat berat karena tugas mereka tidak hanya mengajar (transfer of knowledge) tapi juga mendidik (transfer of value/norms).  Pendidikan tidak hanya berhenti kepada perkembangan kemampuan otak (kognisi dan metakognisi)  tapi juga tidak kalah pentingnya adalah bagaimana mengolah hati (afektif) sehingga bisa tercermin dalam sikap dan perbuatan (karakter). Kata kunci : Media Bekas, Wacana, Bahasa Inggris.
