Abstract

A number of accidents on our roads are caused by driver fatigue or drowsiness. Human fatalities as a result of driver drowsiness has been a major challenge for road safety bodies worldwide. Various road safety campaign messages have been put out to discourage drivers from driving whilst tired, but the problem still persists. Different technologies have been proposed over the years, but most seem to be too expensive to implement on a large scale. We present an inexpensive drowsing driver alert system in this paper. The system, known as Drowsing Driver Alert System (DDAS) is a smart system intended to effectively keep commercial drivers alert when driving. The system is able to detect when a driver is drowsy and alert him/her in real-time to prevent a potential accident. Using a camera, the eyes of the driver are monitored continuously whiles driving and analyzed to determine if they are shut or the blink rate is not normal. Two stages of alerts are given if the driver is determined to be drowsy. Log files of activities performed by the system are also saved to an external storage device to enable further analysis later.

Abstract

The traditional electrical distribution panel (or breaker panel) is a system that divides the main electrical power feed and distributes them to subsidiary circuits whiles providing a protective mechanism via the use of miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, etc. The conventional panel distributes electrical power alright but the system does not make provision for any form of real time monitoring and feedback of power consumption levels in the home. This paper presents a design of a miniature circuit breaker distribution panel integrated with other electronic devices which helps achieve real time monitoring of power consumption and also automatically trips the circuit if there is a fault and reconnects the circuit if the fault is cleared to ensure little to no interruption in electricity to appliances.

Abstract

Monitoring the level of water in dams is necessary to ensure optimal operation and safety. Water level monitoring is normally done manually by a full-time operator. This results mostly in a waste of water due to the inability of the operator to accurately determine the quantity of water to release from the dam gate. The aim of this paper is to present the design of a system to automatically open and close dam gates based on the level of water in the dam. The system is based on a low-cost microcontroller and an ultrasonic sensor to read water level in the dam. SMS messages are sent to nearby residents to warn them of the opening of the dam gate. An alarm is also sounds before the eventual opening of the dam gate.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of an automatic ceiling fan speed regulator using web camera and a temperature sensor. Fans have become a very important aspect of our daily lives to present us with comfort especially in hot climates. However, they come with some attendant issues such as a person having to move to where the fan regulators are placed to be able to adjust the speed of the fan. This can be difficult as temperatures change during the day as well as at night when one is asleep. This also poses a problem for physically challenged individuals with mobility difficulties. This project seeks to design a solution that involves automatic fan regulation. This was achieved using a temperature sensor, a camera that captures images, and a system intelligent unit that processes the captured images to detect occupancy. The speed of the fan is then automatically adjusted based on the room temperature and occupancy. The system was implemented on a raspberry pi, a resource constrained edge computing environment.

Abstract

Supermarket shopping is an essential part of the livelihood of most people around the world. Consumers can acquire items essential for their daily activities. However, in an ever-evolving world with an increasing population and increasing crime rates, supermarket theft is becoming a prevalent problem with supermarket owners spending large sums of money on hiring security often with little effect. Organized Retail Crime (ORC) costs the retail industry approximately $30 billion each year, with 71.3% of retailers reporting an increase in ORC year-over-year. With the current global economic conditions, high labor costs are longer feasible. Consumers also face the issue of paying for items they did not select. Advanced camera systems, for some, may be an escape however, this approach is not feasible for all aspects of shopping and in underdeveloped countries that have technical constraints. The advent of digitization has helped improve the livelihood of consumers in Ghana. Currently, many large-scale retailers are oblivious to some of these advancements. The oblivion of the management of such retail services results in the loss of products, customer dissatisfaction, and the mismanagement of untracked products by employees. To reduce theft and the mismanagement of products by employees, a smart antitheft system should be deployed in supermarkets; at the till and before the exit of supermarkets to ensure all products leaving the store are paid for and accounted for. The system consists of a deactivation and theft detection system. The product is deactivated by the store attendant at the till when the customer pays for the product. However, if a customer crosses the initial warning zone without paying, a warning sound is triggered and after the customer crosses the final warning zone, the alarm is triggered indicating an attempted theft by the customer. A log of products is also kept ensuring employees are not stealing products. This paper presents a smart way of detecting theft during supermarket shopping using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers and tags, a microcontroller-based control system, a database server, and an Integromat.

Abstract

Abstract. During lectures, unless a lecturer clearly spots out that a particular student is absent, it becomes difficult to do so in an institution where manual system or sheet of papers are used for recording attendance. Students can sign the signatures of their colleagues and hence fill in the particulars of their absentee friend during attendance recording. This attitude employed by students nullifies the very purpose of taking attendance during lectures. Fingerprints are unique to each individual. They are considered as the best and fastest method for biometric identification. The hand or fingers of a student cannot be passed on to a colleague and hence his/her fingerprints. In an academic environment, the ability of a student to make a copy of his/her fingerprint for the purpose of proxy attendance recording is minimal or non-existent. A student has to be present at a lecture before he/she can be verified biometrically. In this paper, we present a fingerprint-based Biometric Course Attendance Monitor for recording attendance in educational institutions. The system comprises of an embedded device and a web application. The embedded device records attendance electronically after a student is identified using fingerprint recognition system. Attendance is recorded and stored locally on the embedded device. The device is then interfaced with a web application for managing the attendance records of students. Abstract

It is of no doubt that, emergencies occur without warning, and one does not predict the outcome. This project seeks to design a personal emergency or panic alert system (digiRESCUE) to aid in inevitable and dangerous situations. The digiRESCUE system has two main parts: the embedded hardware and software application. The hardware part is made up of a button embedded with a chip. This button when pressed triggers the chip, which then activates the software, portion of the system to send an automated message including the individual’s location to the selected contacts saved in the software application. The software part of the system is in the form of a mobile application, which can be downloaded onto a mobile device. This software would allow users to record or write an SOS message and input selected contacts (including friends, family, and authorities) who would be alerted of the user’s predicament when the external button in pressed. This software application can tap into the mobile device’s GPS module to inform the selected contacts of the individual’s location. The hardware would interact with the software application via Bluetooth connectivity therefore making the process of seeking for help, a lot quicker and easier. In situations where the individual is held as a hostage, he or she can easily call for help without drawing attention to oneself

Abstract

Communication these days has taken a huge turn to depend extremely on the internet. Software such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and the general social media receive about a billion active users. This demonstrates how most communication has relied on the internet. However, this approach does not serve well under some conditions. Firstly, places without internet access suffer greatly from multimedia messaging. They are either unable to initiate a conversation at all or suffer a relatively slower user experience even when they message people in close proximity. Furthermore, the cost incurred in messaging people over these platforms with people nearby could be avoided should the communication be over a local area network rather than depending on the services of an Internet Service Provider. This project investigates the design and implementation of an efficient communication system for devices near each other that relies on any local area network that a particular device is connected to. Such targeted networks include mobile Wi-Fi and cable connections. This work designed and implemented a Local Area Network based Messaging Platform, capable of working on all local networks regardless of being cable or wireless. The system is extensible, allowing for a node to re-broadcast the network onto other networks it might be connected to and works without internet access, allowing the sending and sharing of text and media files.
