Abstract

This study aims to investigate the ideology of pop culture in Esti Kinasih’s Fairish teenager literature with descriptive analytical method and is framed based on pop culture and ideology theory. The study was conducted by analyzing the representation of pop culture in the intrinsic elements of the novel and in the dialogues and narrations as well. The elements are then analyzed how they are intertwined to form a particular ideology that is injected to the readers. The result of the analysis shows that the novel contains pop culture which is visible from the colloquial language, the partyculture, the dating culture and the stereotypes of boy/girlfriend, and the idea of how to resolve the problem as well. The ideology found is the idea injection that the artificial culture –although it is outside the norm and appropriateness of Indonesian culture- constitutes something that is reasonable and legitimate to do.

Abstract

Disproving the ‘famous-for-being-famous’ epithet, Kim Kardashian shares the intricacy of the tricky and binding work of celebrity into the nascent screen-based culture, the mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood (KK: H). With swipes and taps to follow the in-game stories, the KK: H player discovers the set of rules and features of KK: H that welcome them to the digitalized version of aesthetic and glamour labors where the states of being fashionable, ageless and charming are matter. Through an analysis of in-game dominant discourse as well as the player’s game experience shown in Facebook public groups, this study explores the underlying values manifesting the practice of aesthetic and glamour labors as an engaging strategy of digital gameplay. The exploration falls into four stages of docility (Power, System, Surveillance, and Normalization) that built upon Michel Foucault’s theory of Docile Body to examine the gameplay as simulating the “real” constitutive social practice of celebrity that lead the examination to the case of Hyper-reality. The result of this examination places KK: H as the particular cultural representation as well as a seemingly playful parody of celebrity work wherein the pursuit of mass beauty standard is associated with the pursuit of fame in the interest of financial benefits and personal satisfaction. Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memajankan pemahaman konsep jender dan kesetaraan jender bagi siswa agar bisa meminimalisir opresi, diskriminasi dan perundungan yang sering terjadi terhadap anak perempuan. Kegiatan ini juga bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman siswa mengenai nilai pendidikan karakter dan sikap positif. Mitra kegiatan adalah siswa dan guru TK Kranggan Lembur Mandiri, Kelurahan Jatirangga, Kecamatan Jatisampurna, Bekasi. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan melalui metode pendampingan pembacaan cerita, perancangan rencana pembacaan cerita berdasarkan pembacaan tematik, dan penyediaan materi berupa buku cerita anak, serta pembuatan video cerita anak bermuatan kesetaraan jender untuk pembelajaran mandiri siswa. Dari pemantauan dan evaluasi kegiatan yang dilakukan melalui observasi dan wawancara, kegiatan ini membantu meningkatkan pemahaman siswa mengenai peranan dan pemberdayaan perempuan melalui pendidikan, pengayaan karakter dan sikap-sikap positif berkeadilan jender (bisa bekerjasama, berkompetisi, aktif, berempati, memecahkan masalah), meningkatkan kompetensi kebahasaan, literasi visual (pengenalan warna dan gambar), pemahaman literasi budaya melalui cerita anak bermuatan budaya lokal Indonesia dan berwawasan jender .

Abstract

Islamophobia constitutes a negative action, attitude, and prejudice towards Islam as an ideology and against Muslims as followers of the ideology. It exists in any context and media including fictional works. This article discusses Islamophobia in an (English-translated) French novel entitled The Age of Reinvention written by Karine Tuil. The discussion focuses on how Islam and Muslims are represented in the novel and how the author uses some ironies to convey certain ideology. The author tends to be Islamophobic by describing Muslims as fatalist and immoral, and Islam as an uncivilized religion, barbaric, supportive of terrorism and irrational. Through the characters, narrations, and dialogues, the author also tends to have a sentiment on some issues related to Islam.

Abstract

Punk constitutes a subculture that is perceived as an androgyny community in which there is no clear difference between men and women. However, this androgyny matter is questioned by the sexism that occurred through hegemonic masculinity. This study aims to see how the femininity of punk women intertwined with the hegemonic masculinity and to see the resistance to the hegemony in Kuehnert's I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone and Castellucci's Beige novel. The method used is descriptive analysis with the theory of hegemony masculinity. The results of this study indicate that hegemonic masculinity in punk is constructed through social structure and rock music. The resistance of women gets a rejection from both punk men and women themselves. The masculinity of punk women then raises the ambiguity of their position and role in the community.

Abstract

This study explores how Afro-American racial oppression is reflected in Black Writers’ poems, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Amiri Baraka. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this study analyzed words, phrases, and clauses indicating Afro-American racial oppression in the ten selected poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar and Amiri Baraka. Roland Barthes’ semiotic was employed to get the interpretation of the signs used in the poems. These interpretations were strengthen by juxtaposing the meaning with socio-cultural context of the poems using Wellek and Warren’s perspective of sociological approach in literature. The result of the study showed that as African American, both Paul Laurence Dunbar and Amiri Baraka portray the experience and feeling of Afro-Americans towards racial oppression in United States of America. Through the use of particular signs in their poems, Dunbar and Baraka speak up about the ill-treatments directed to Afro-Americans as well as the injustice that occurred in United States. Dunbar depicts the life of African American during the Jim-Crow America where the practice of discrimination was spreading like wildfire. Whilst, Baraka portrays the life of Afro-Americans during the 1960s in which Black people remained the target of oppression. The analysis of the ten selected poems showed that despite the fact that Black residents have achieved formal equality through the Civil Right Acts in 1964, significant racial oppression persists. Afro-Americans had to deal with oppression during and after the segregation era. In their poems, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Amiri Baraka also advocate African Americans to establish racial pride within themselves for them have been degraded through racial oppression by White ruling race.
