Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Education in Indonesia is declared to be in an emergency state, whereas a lot of innovative policies have been offered, mainly since the availability of education reform and autonomy in 2003. This situation illustrates the world of education in Indonesia are still many weaknesses and needs to be revised thoroughly. The education process, however, should be fun, child-centered, and that new curriculum policies have to be rooted in the people and exempted from short-term political interests. The writer argues that the national education system can be improved through developing character-based curriculum and textbooks by fulfilling four criteria, those are: the adoption of a broader conception of curriculum; participatory curriculum decision making; a critical analysis of characteristic values in textbooks; and developing character education by integrating good values into the textbooks and in other activities either planned or in those forming the hidden curriculum. Empirical findings from primary research and observation on the implementation of the 1994 Curriculum, Competency-Based and School-Based Curriculum (2006), and 2013 Curriculum, which are analyzed in lights of curriculum and textbook theories and practices from around the world, form the argumentative strengths of this article. The character education program has to be integrated in the curriculum revision and preparation of textbooks.KEY WORD: Indonesian education, formal curriculum, hidden curriculum, textbooks, character values, integrating good values, and character education. About the Author: Iwan Jazadi, Ph.D. is a Lecturer and Chairman of STKIP (College of Education and Teacher Training) Paracendekia NW Sumbawa, Jalan Lintas Sumbawa Bima Km.5, Sumbawa Besar, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. Abstract

This article analyzes the concerns, roots, and challenges to Sumbawa culture, aiming to inform decisions in designing halal tourism policy in Sumbawa and West Sumbawa Regencies. The theories underpinning this study are that of culture, cultural approaches in foreign language teaching, and halal tourism. The data for analysis come from documentation and observation. The results and discussion show that the present state of Sumbawa culture is at risk of loss or distortion unless its revitalization is committed. The cultural roots identified and analyzed are the ancestors’ cultures, historical Islamic cultures, and prominent values in social interaction by Sumbawa people. A future challenge to Sumbawa culture lies in the handing down of cultural values by ensuring the fulfilment of the people’s right to quality education at all education channels,  accomodating the rooted cultural values into the educational content, and implementing halal tourism as a means of socialization among Sumbawa people and with guests from other regions or overseas.

Abstract

This paper argues that to have a successful learning of English in Indonesian schools, the consideration of culture should be at the forefront. That is, it is acknowledged that to learn English as a second or foreign language cannot be separated from the target language culture or the western culture. On the other hand, the perspective of English as global or international language allows the integration or use of students’ local cultural background into the teaching materials. To shed light on this critical issue, this study seeks to describe Indonesian learners’ characteristic cultural backgrounds and their perception toward western culture. Relying on a literature study and the first author’s experience and observation, the findings show that Indonesian learners share the culturally embedded characteristics of passivity, shyness, and lack of critical thinking, while perceiving western culture as negative, colonizing, dominating, and threatening. Therefore, it is concluded that English language teaching in Indonesia should integrate students’ local cultures and be prepared and implemented by highly skilled Indonesian teachers and practitioners who are abreast with ELT theories and development at the world level including those from the western world.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the syntactic ability and the form of syntactic errors at the writing of deaf students at the senior high school level of Public Special School (SLBN) 1 Sumbawa. Participants in this study were five students consisting of 1 of the10th grade, 3 of the 11th students, and 1 of the 12th grade. The research was qualitative, while the data were collected using written tests. For the data analysis, the researchers used the theory of Chaer about syntactic functions and devices. The results of the study show that the forms of errors in the student's writing consist of errors on the use of subjects, predicates, objects, and adverbs. Other forms of errors lie in the order of words, word forms, and use of conjunction. Another finding is that some students were able to compile sentences based on S + Adv + P, while the other students were only able to compile sentences with the S + Adj pattern. Based on these findings, it is expected that parents or teachers play a role to teach children or students how to compose sentences with a simple pattern so that children who suffer from deafness are able to convey what they want to convey.
