Abstract

Research on epidemiology, pathology, clinical course, and treatment of cancer is available. The epidemiological and clinical research on cancer must be brought into a comprehensive scheme. Basic research on oncology is suggested to be based on cancer epidemiology, and applicable for clinical practice. This article discusses the new concept of basic oncology research using breast cancer as a model. It is concluded that the new concepts in basic oncology research have to be based on the community need. It will be better if the research is multidisciplinary and multiinstitutional approach. Using this approach the expectation is that and the result could solve the problem either in the community or in the hospital.Key Words: oncology-cancer epidemiology-breast cancer oncogen-immunohistoclinical signs -prognostic index

Abstract

There are differences in background between cancer and other diseases, among others the difference in sex incidence, behaviour, cellular changes, and clinical aspects. Therefore, research on cancer is suggested to be based on cancer epidemiology, basic research, and clinical research. This article discusses the basic principles of cancer research from the point of view of epidemiological and clinical concepts. It is concluded that research in cancer epidemiology must be based on the well-developed cancer registry. The epidemiological and clinical research of cancer must be brought into a comprehensive scheme. It will be useful if basic research is correlated with research in cancer epidemiology. Clinical research must be based on epidemiological and basic research.Key Words: cancer research - cancer registry - cancer epidemiology - oncology - clinical trials

Abstract

It is clear that the function of the pathologist is to determine the definite diagnosis. Many physicians think that the role of the pathologist is limited to the hospital. In the oncology team the pathologist has an important role not only in the hospital but also in the community. The role of the pathologist in the oncology team among others are in secondary prevention, for an early cancer detection program in the community; to help the team in improving the health services in the population; to prepare the population-based cancer registration; to determine the definite diagnosis, stage, managementof cancer patients in the hospital, and to evaluate therapeutic reaction and management result of cancer patients in the hospital.Key Words: role of pathologists - fine needle aspiration biopsy - frozen section - population-based cancer registry - stages of cancer

Abstract

Rappaport non-Hodgkin lymphoma classification is well known, by pathologists and clinicians. This classification is based on the morphology of tumor cells. Lukes and Collins classification, and also Lennert classification are new non-Hodgkin lymphoma classifications. These classifications are based on morphology, basic function of tumor cells, and the clinical application. However, there are some differences between Rappaport classification, Lukes and Collins classification and Lennert classification. To compromise the differences of the classifications, there is a working classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma which is used for clinical diagnosis. It is important to discuss the non-Hodgkin lymphoma classifications because each classification has its own basis. The basic classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is useful for the specialists based on their specialties; Lennert classification, and Lukes and Collins classification are the applicable classifications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for pathologists and clinicians, while Rappaport classification is more useful for pathologists.Key Words: non-Hodgkin lymphoma histopathological diagnosis of lymphoma - basic function of tumor cells - leucaemia - Sezary's syndrome

Abstract

Based on technique of cancer registration there are three types of cancer registry. These types are: 1.pathology department-based cancer registry 2.hospitl -based cancer registry 3. population-based cancer registry. Each of these types has its own method and characteristics. The aim of pupulation-based cancer registry is ib evaluate and control the trends of cancer in the community. This field has very close relation with cancer epidemiology. The prospect of the population-based cancer registry in Indonesia depends on various conditions. It is concluded that the Special Province of Yogyakarta could fulfill the conditions for the purpose of developing population-based cancer registry in Indonesia, while Bali is an ideal place for population-based cancer registry in Indonesia. Therefore, other conditions are needed for this purpose. Key Words: population-based cancer registry - technique of cancer registration - characteristics of cancer registry - cancer control in the community - cancer epidemiology

Abstract

The mortality of the premature babies in Indonesia is still high. The exact cause of death is still unknown, because necropsy and pathological examination of the whole placenta are very rarely carried out. Needle biopsy of the dead premature babies' organ is expected to help in searching the cause of death. A retrospective study was performed to reevaluate the biopsied organs of the dead prema tures from October 1970 through September 1971 in the Department of Pathology, Gadjah Mada University. Yogyakarta. The result of this study shows that early neonatal death of premature babies is 80,6% of all premature death. Based on histopathological examination of lung biopsies of those dead premature babies, it is clear that atelectasis is the primary cause, congestion the second, and Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD) the third. Biopsies of other organs could not determine the exact cause of premature deaths as yet. Key Words: premature baby - early neonatal death - needle biopsy - atelectasis - Hyaline Membrane Disease

Abstract

Cimpaign against cancer is not only the duty of the medical professional but also the respon• sibility of the society. The activities of the Sardjito Teaching Hospital Cancer Team. "Kucala" Cancer Society, county hospitals, health centres and physicians in private practice are presented. It is clear that the role of the Cancer Team of the Medical Faculty/the SardjitO Teaching Hospital, "Kucala" Cancer Society and medical professionals are very important in the detection of cancer. Due to the lack of facilitiei and based on the situation of the Yogyakarta area, it seems that there are many problems to deal with.It is suggested that a well organized cancer society will be able to solve the problems.Key Words: cancer - community health - anti-cancer campaign - health organization -- early diagnosis

Abstract

There is a tendency of primary liver cancer between 1970-1973 corresponding to the introduction of liver biopsy in Yogyakarta. Liver cancer had previously been found to be the most frequent tumour in necropsy material in Java. In the series, composed of biopsies only, it accounted for 36.8% of all abdominal cancers biopsied in Yogyakarta in 1973 and is thus more frequent than indicated by the total material covering a 4-year period (1970-1973).Based on the data of the Department of Pathology and population in 1976 by utilizing the formulathe primary liver cancer incidence in 1974 through 1978 is provided. It seems that the minimum incidence of primary liver cancer in Yogyakarta is lower than the incidence in other countries in Asia and AfricaKey Words: liver cancer - cancer registration -incidence of hepatoma - racial predisposition for cancer - viral hepatitis
