Abstract

This article aim to describle some fields in communication studies. The fields are characterized by process of borrowing from other sciences and combining with the domain of communication studies. What is quite remarkable from this borrowwing and combination is that it creates some subdomains of communication studies, such as: development communication, political communication, environmental communication, and communication policy. These sub-domains ofcommunication studies tend to be practical, focusing on practicality rather than concepts. The impact of this on commnunication scholars is an issue that the scholars should have enough knowledge on empirical practice before or while studying the sub-domains of communication studies.

Abstract

Three years since its first appearance at the end of 2019, until now, Covid-19 still exists. Realizing that the handling of Covid-19 cannot be carried out alone, the Indonesian government is trying to involve various parties to provide the public with an understanding of the risks. Considering that Covid-19 is still around, efforts to reflect on the risk communication system and the various risk policies adopted are necessary as a preventive action to anticipate various potential risks and health crises in the future. This research is qualitative with a case study type. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with the Covid-19 handling committee in Indonesia (KPC PEN), observation, and literature study. The results of this study indicate that in building a risk communication system, the government cooperates with various parties. The communication system and risk policies implemented by the Indonesian government are not optimal in understanding risks to the public. Efforts are needed to conduct regular evaluations and monitoring to optimize communication systems and risk policies in anticipation of future health crises.

Abstract

Digital transformation has many implications for society, not only positive, but also negative. Various crimes in the cyber world, including hoaxes and infodemics, are something that cannot be avoided. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of hoax and infodemic news made the handling of Covid-19 in Indonesia more complex. Many people are victims of hoaxes which in the end take action against government policies related to Covid-19, such as reluctance to comply with health protocols and rejection of vaccination programs. This research contributes to studying the challenges of digital transformation in Indonesia, especially during the past Covid-19 pandemic. The research method used in this paper is a case study. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews from Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, literature studies, both from books, journals and scientific articles. The results of this study indicate that digital transformation has encouraged the growth of hoaxes and infodemics which have hampered efforts to deal with Covid-19. The Indonesian government needs to take structured actions in dealing with this hoax and infodemic, and make regulations to optimize the digital transformation process.
