Abstract

Generally, this research is aimed at improving students’ reading comprehension by implementing the PQRST teaching method. Subjects of the research are the students of 2009/2010 academic year taking reading I subject. The research uses classroom action research method. The data are collected by reading comprehension test for measuring the students’s reading comprehension and questionarrie with Liket scale for collecting the students’ perceptions toward  PQRST teaching method. The data are analyzed by descriptive technique. The results of research show that 1) the preliminary comprehension of the students’ reading comprehension is relative poor and very poor in which the distribution of comprehension is not proportional, 2) After first cycle, the students’ reading comprehension improve relativel significantly, 3) Then, after the end of the research, the students’ reading comprehensions improve significantly which most of them (52,94) obtains grade B or  it is categorized good and (8,82%) reaches grade A. Only about (32.35%) and (2,94%) of them still have grade C and D. However, nobody gets failed.  In term of perception, generally the students have positive and good responds and perception toward the PQRST teaching method for teaching and learning reading comprehension subject.   Kata Kunci : metode PQRST, keterampilan membaca

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to investigate deixis found in the articles of Inside Sumatera Magazine, especially in Adventure, Destination and Travelling coloums. It was conducted to discover the types of deixis as proposed by Cruse (2000) namely: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The objectives of this study is to describe type of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in articles of Inside Sumatera magazine. This study was taken from the article of Inside sumatera magazine and ten article are taken as the samples. Documentary technique is due in collecting data. The findings show that the total number of deixis from the whole articles were 1504 occurrences, 656 occurrences (43.62%) was person deixis, 465 occurrences (30.92%) was place deixis, 227 occurrences (15.09%) was time deixis, 137 occurrences (9.10%) was discourse deixis, and 19 occurrences (1.27%) was social deixis. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with The Changing of Characterization of The Main Characters in David Nicholls’ One Day. The objectives of this study are to find out the changing of characterization and the reasons that cause the changing in the novel. This study is limited to analyze Dexter Mayhew as the main character. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from David Nicholls’ novel One Day. The findings indicate that Dexter has round and negative side as his nature; Arrogant, Ambitious, Hedonistic and Selfish. The character finally ended to the positive characterization;  being responsible and mature. The reason causing the changing of characterization of the main character is that facing a major outside challenge, developing a close relationship with someone very diffrent from himself such as Sylvie, Jasmine and Emma, and facing his own inner demons and prejudices. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

AbstractThis study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text through quantum learning. This study was conducted by using action research at second year of SMP N 1 Kabanjahe. The sample of this study was just one class namely: VIII-2. The number of this class was 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. Cycle 1 consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was writing test while the quantitative data were gathered through interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the writing test result, the students score kept improving in every test. In pre test, the mean score was 52, 61. In the test of cycle I, the mean score was 63 and the mean score in test of cycle II was 80. The conclusion is that quantum learning can improve the students’ descriptive writing achievement.Key words: Students’ Achievement, Writing, Descriptive text, Quantum Learning
