Abstract

This article is about the kinds of questions and their role & function. The research design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data are teachers’ questions which were occurred in the process of teaching and learning. The data was analyzed based on Kenchak & Eggen’s theory. Based on the analysis, it was found that display questions dominated the teachers’ questions and it was followed by referential and yes/no questions. Then, the role & function of teachers’ questions was dominated by diagnostic and it was followed by instructional and motivator questions. It was defined that teachers’ questions were still in the low level, that is the teacher wanted to know whether the students were able to answer the questions or not.

Abstract

 ABSTRACT   This  thesis  deals  with  Lexical  Metaphor  as  found  in  the  Selected  Songs  of  Bon Jovi.  It  was  conducted  to  discover  the  types  of  Lexical  of  Metaphor  as  proposed  by Saragih  (2006:162)  namely  Lexical  metaphor  that  is  formed  by  comparing  Noun  with Noun, Lexical metaphor that is formed by comparing Noun with  verb, Lexical metaphor that  is  formed  by  comparing  Noun  with  Adjective,  Lexical  metaphor  that  is  comparing two ideologys or concepts, as symbol of sound. In this researh the writer found out three types  of  lexical  metaphor  that  applied  in  the  Bon  Jovi’s  songs.  The  research  was conducted  by  using  descriptive  qualitative  approach.  The  subjects  of  the  study  is  all contetnts of the selected songs of Bon Jovi’s song.   The  findings  indicate  that  lexical  metaphor  found  in  the  song  include,  Nominal-Verbal/Verbal-Nominal  (61%),Nominal-Nominal  (16%),Nominal-Adjective  (13%). Lexical metaphor formed by comparing Noun with Verb was the most dominatly \ in Bon Jovi’s Selected songs. Because he described the meaning and represented his feelings.  Keywords : Lexical Metaphor, Bon Jovi’s Selected Songs

Abstract

This study is analysis of classroom interaction between English and Mathematics subject which conducted by teachers and students through communication in classroom interaction. The aims of this study were: (a) To identify the kinds of Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern are used by the teacher and students in classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model (1975), and (b) To find out why the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern is dominant in classroom interaction through different subject. The design of the research used qualitative research. To answer the problem of study, the data collected through the following instrument: observation, recording and interviewing which were analyzed by using Sinclair and Coulthard model and a concept of teaching. The results of this research were the following, (a) it was found that in English and Mathematics classroom discourse, as the IR (Initiation-Response) was used more often by teachers and I (Initiation) was used by students in English classroom then IF (Initiation-Feedback) was used by students in Mathematics classroom, (b) the reason why the IRF pattern dominantly appeared based on teacher’s performance which dominantly initiated questions and information was affected by the presage category and context category then the students’ performance which dominantly responded the teachers’ questions and information was affected by the students’ thought processes category.Key words: Classroom interaction, classroom discourse, Sinclair and Coulthard Model, IRF Pattern.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition through Debate Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA-1 SMAN 1 Pancur Batu consisting of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In the first cycle test, the mean of writing score was 61,67. In the second cycle test the mean of writing score was 71,36. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Debate Technique can improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition.   Keywords: Debate Technique, Writing, Analytical Exposition, Action research

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the lexical density especially the lexical items of English reading texts in the textbook for senior high school. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density especially the lexical items which formed in the reading texts of Look Ahead textbook and the type of genre which has the highest lexical density of the reading texts. This study was conducted by descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this research were the English reading texts of Look Ahead textbook for senior high school grade twelve published by Erlangga. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) The lexical items that formed in narrative texts are noun and verb, explanation texts are noun and verb, discussion texts are noun and verb, and review texts are noun, adjective, and verb. This means that narrative, explanation, and discussion texts are formed by two lexical items, they are noun and verb while review texts are formed by 3 lexical items, they are noun, adjective, and verb. (2) The lexical density of explanation texts are 58,42% an 52,05%, review texts are 55,73% and 53,51%, narrative texts are 48,96% and 43,97%, and discussion texts are 47,79% and 42,57%. The highest lexical density of the reading texts is the explanation text with percentage 58,42%. This meant that explanation text is the most difficult text to be comprehended in the textbook. It is suggested that further textbook writers to concern with the lexical density of the reading texts so that the textbook can be used and understood by the teacher and the students. Abstract

AbstractStudents‟ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Realia was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VII in Junior High School (SMP N 2 ) Kisaran. In the first evaluation (66, 2926) increased to the mean of second evaluation (76, 7560) and the mean of third evaluation (87, 0243). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of Realia. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of Realia had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students‟ achievement is improved when thay are tought through Realia.Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Realia

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique. The result of writing test showed that the students score kept improving significantly. The mean of post-test I was 80,525 and the mean of post-test II was 92,98. The mean score of post-test II in cycle II was the highest. The mean of post-test I until post-test II increased significantly from 80,525 to 92,98. The students became active participants,  enjoyable, and enthusiatis in teaching and learning process through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Technique. The result of the research showed the progress of achievement scores, it can be concluded that Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text. Abstract

Abstract This study aims to find out the effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. The population of the study was the first year student at Man 2 Model Medan. In this study the sample is 50 students where 25 students took as experimental group and 25 students rest was control group. The data of this study was collected by oral test . It was applied in pre test and post test, then the scores were analyzes by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that t-observed value is higher than t-table value ( 3>2.00 ) at the level os significant 0.05 with the degree of freedom 48. It means that there was a effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. Keywords: Community Language Learning, Students’ Achievement, Speaking
