Abstract

AbstractThis conceptual paper, presents about the result of discussion regarding students-centered learning improves students’ cognitive ability. SCL improves skills  by  developing  cognitive  ability  lies  within  them  as  the  first  basic  skill. It is important for students to have adequate cognitive abilities to keep up the materials which are being taught by teachers. Therefore, this paper will explain about cognitive ability. Cognitive ability which is affecting on learning process, has made some teachers struggle to seek a way how to improve it. There are few methods that have been chosen thoroughly for developing cognitive abilities on students. First is about developing thinking that refers mainly to how students think effectively and creatively. Second is about cooperative learning that refers to how students cooperate or work with other and effect of partners in learning process. Abstract

This research explained how listening comprehension by Short Story Gap Fill improved students’ listening comprehension achievement, observed students’ behavior during listening comprehension class and described the teacher’s Gap Fill technique along with the research. It used Classroom Action Research (CAR) with quantitatively data then analyzed into qualitative. The qualitative data were about students’ interview, while the quantitative data was their scores in pre-test and post-test on listening comprehension. Short Story Gap Fill contained listening comprehension exercises which tend to prove the missing words or phrases on a script of a story or a dialog; they were “pre, while and post-listening which focused on students’ ability to carry out the gap on the listening exercises. This research consisted of two cycles. The findings involved, the third-semester students of the English Department were fascinated by Short Story Gap Fill and immersed in listening comprehension well. However, during the first cycle, there were still 3 from 31 incompletely fulfill the gap in listening comprehension because they could not catch the vocabulary well and less focus. Ultimately, on the second cycle, the students' accomplishment in listening comprehension through this technique improved dramatically on their score of using the same technique. Keywords: CAR, Gap Fill, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

The language phenomenon which is often called Translanguaging is an activity and process of language shifting. It includes the transformation between languages that are used with various other language sources to improve certain language skills. This research raised a romantic drama consisting of 13 episodes with several famous stars in Indonesia. Through data from the drama film of HALUSTIK, the researcher described the concept, function, benefits and linguistic resources that could be learned from translanguaging in this drama film. The language used in this film was dominated by 45% Indonesian, 40% English, 20% Sundanese and Javanese. The findings in this study, the researcher described the category of translanguaging in a concept that was divided into two, namely translanguaging space and translanguaging instinct. Whereas translanguaging functions were explained based on the communication carried out in the drama of HALUSTIK film taken from the first episode to the third. In addition, the benefits after watching this film, English learners in Indonesia could get some useful English expressions, fluent English pronunciation that could be transformed into Indonesian in a smooth and creative manner. The use of the Indonesian language that supported English in this film was very helpful to improve the source of knowledge and was able to provide a better understanding. The conclusion that can be taken after analyzing the Halustik drama film is that translanguaging does not damage the original language, it even supports understanding to facilitate the use of other languages. Abstract

The goal of this research was to decide how effective jigsaw improved the comprehension ability of reading descriptive text of class X students of Sultan Agung 1 Semarang Islamic High School in 2018/2019 academic year in understanding descriptive text. This research type was on a quasi-experimental design.  The Senior High School students gade tenth as the population of this study which divided into two groups, X IPS 1 class developed as group of class control and X IPS 2 served as the group of experimental. The way to gather some data, Pre-test and post were used to evaluate the students’ competence. Grounded on the results of the study, the mean score of pretest done in the control class was in the average of 52.93, while on the experimental class was happened 53.06. Treatment was implemented on the experiment class in about four times while the control class was educated by conservative teaching. After implementing four times of treatment, the mean score of the post-test of the control class rose up by 60.17. Accordingly, the post-test mean of the experimental class in the average score of 70.32. Based on the results of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference because of the T-test indicating that sig (2-tailed) showed in the number 0.000. Briefly, Ho was rejected but H1 was accepted. This means that jigsaw was operative to enhance reading comprehension ability of the students.
