Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v5i2.98The abundance of sea floor zircon mineral in the studied area was found at the southwest of Kabung Island (SKWL-56) which was accumulated in silty sand sediments at 23 m water depth. Based on the grain mineragraphy analysis, this mineral has various characteristics: rose, white, and brownish yellow colours, elongated prismatic crystals, and translucent to transparent appearances. The distribution profile lines have shown that the distribution of seafloor zircon tends to decrease from Kabung and its surrounding areas to Lemukutan, and from Kabung to the Land of Kalimantan. Considering the abundances, distribution, crystal shape, and mineral association, the zircon mineral in the studied area is a placer deposit that was produced by transport processes characterized by the changing form of crystal. Some samples observed, showed corrosion marks due to a transportation activity, while the transparent level change of these minerals was suggested to be due to much penetration into cavities in the mineral, which lead to the presence of gangue material during the deposition process.

Abstract

Biogenic gas potency in Indramayu coastal area had been studied by coastal characteristic mapping, soft sediment sampling using specially designed gravity corer and information of gas seeps from local people. The preliminary study was carried out through gatherings of secondary data from many sources which meant to better understand the forms of paleo-dunes in coastal zone of Indramayu surround Cimanuk River deltaic system that already buried subsurface. The study found out that this alternative gas potency is trapped within paleo-beach sand in Indramayu coastal zone. The study also found that the buried beach sand at southeast of Cimanuk River delta's system parallel to northwest-southeast orientation of recent coastline is bearing biogenic gas potency. Based on field observation, the locations of gas seeps take place on the beach sand mentioned. The study also performed utilization of biogenic gas by community south of Indramayu.Key words: paleo-coastal dune, biogenic gas trap, Indramayu coastal zone.

Abstract

Indramayu coast is characterized by sandy coastal dunes, with mangroves in between. The existence and conservation of mangroves are very important for biogenic gas occurences in this area; while the subsurface paleo sandy coastal dune sare strongly predicted as a gas reservoir. An inventory of Recent sandy dunes using coastal characteristic mapping method is important, because through dune identification; paleo-coastal dune condition that has already been in the subsurface can be identified. Detailed investigation is still required in order to truly invent this biogenic gas potency, before being utilized especially for the local community. The detailed exploration can be done through grid hand auger drillings combined with a subsurface radar for its lateral distributions. Keywords : coastal characteristics, biogenic gas, Indramayu
