Abstract

This study aims to discuss the people's understanding of the immortality of pious people in the funeral complex of Lasem Jami’ mosque, and the values embodied in the surrounding community’s daily lives. Based on the phenomenological approach, wherein data is obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews, the results show that people's belief in immortality is based on their beliefs on the person’s piety, both ritually and socially. It can be seen from the community ways to always put the pious person in an honorable position, through various rituals such as pilgrimage, haul, selametan, and tawasulan. The community beliefs on good deeds will not be broken off after people’s death, becoming their basis to understand in immortality. Immortality can only be obtained by people who can control their bodies and reduce their egos (tazkiyyatun nafs). Immortal pious people are understood to have power and will after their death. This immortal power is believed to be able to provide blessings for the prayers they offered. The ability of the pious people to "accept" the demand is permeable indicates the existence of an immortal will. Hereby, emerge the ethical values, blessing, and multiculturalism in the daily life practices of the surrounding communities.

Abstract

Human nature is a material object of the many developing sciences. This article will focuses on the discussion of human being in terms of existentialism which will be compared between western philosophy and Islamic philosophy. As a limitation, this paper will only discuss Jean-Paul Sartre and Gabriel Marcel from the west tradition and Mulla Sadra and Muhammad Iqbal from the Islamic tradition. This selection is based on thecloseness of their thoughts so that comparisons can be made that are anthropocentric because other philosophers, especially in Islamic tradition, prioritized theological views. This paper finds out that the west and Islam tought tradition, human philosophy has different perspectives and thus has very different ideas. Western philosophy tends to depart from the view of humans as humans themselves or in other words their existence as humans. Meanwhile, Islamic philosophy talks more about human being starting from the view of their relationship with God, although in its development there was a shift towards anthropocentrism. However, the thoughts of the four figures above intersect on the aspect of human being in relation to others. The results of the discussion in this paper shows that it is understood that the western version of philosophical thinking about the relationship between humans and other people emphasizes the rationality and emotional aspects rather than the spiritualprophetic aspects as found in Islamic existentialism. Keywords: Human Being, West-Islam, Rational-Emotional, Spiritual-Profeti

Abstract

death. Its highly contagious nature makes this disease difficult to treat. This condition forces everyone to rely on their own body’s immune system to survive. However, the negative perspective on the body, that is as an object, often makes people fall into panic, so that it can be fatal. Thus, this article was written in context to give a reflective meaning to the body with the philosophical investigation. The body itself is a facticity for "being" together with the soul (mind) and spirit. By understanding the body as the subject’s mode of existence, that is as being-in-the-world, humans can prepare themselves for any eventuality that may occur, including death. Abstract

As a religious institution, pesantren is expected to be able to spread Islamic values of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn and counter radicalism in Indonesia. The portrait of such a pesantren is, for example, reflected in Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang. This study aims to reveal the efforts made by Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang in countering radicalism and terrorism in the country. It is a field study with a qualitative approach, where the data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. This study found that Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang had initiated serious efforts in order to counter radicalism. First, the pesantren teaches the values of diversity to students so that they may act more wisely in responding to differences in cultures, thoughts, and religious ideologies. Second, the pesantren instills in students that the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) has been in accordance with Islamic law and the best form of compromise as the embodiment of Dawlah Mu‘aḥidīn (a treaty-based state). Third, the pesantren opposes radical ideologies which are believed to be one of the crucial factors in the birth of violent acts. Fourth, the pesantren propagates tolerance and pluralism because both are believed to be sourced from the teachings of Islam and the Qur'an. Fifth, the pesantren promotes Islamic moderation. Lastly, the pesantren calls for peace among mankind. Overall, the efforts made by Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang are expected to be a reference for other pesantren in countering radicalism.

Abstract

This article aims to find out and describe the pattern of Islamic education moderation in Indonesian history. Islam in Indonesia is manhaj tawasuá¹ (moderate). With manhaj, Islam as a religion followed by the majority of the Indonesian population succeeded in entering into every aspect of life in Indonesia from social, cultural, economic and even political and government bureaucracy. Similarly, Islamic education managed to occupy an important position in education in Indonesia. Even though it is an alternative education, the fact is that Islamic education in Indonesia is a very important part to educate the nation. Moderation of Islamic education in Indonesia began with the first education model in Indonesia, namely pesantren. The pattern of moderation found from pesantren is cultural acculturation which is very obvious, from the knowledge learned to educational methods used, Arabic pegon to fill the language gap. The next phase is accommodation patterns that we can see from madrasa that adapts the classical government system from the colonial side. The next pattern is formalization that can be described through the phenomenon of state madrasas. Then, the latest is mu'adalah policy and formal diniyyah education. From these patterns it can be concluded that Indonesian Islamic education always takes the middle way (wasaá¹iyyah) of every challenge that arises due to historical movements. This modernization is a genius manner by paying attention to the rules of muḥafadzah ‘alÄqadÄ«m al-ḥÄliḥ wa al-akhdzu bi jadÄ«d al-aá¹£laḥ. With this understanding, Islamic education in Indonesia will always be relevant in every space and time (á¹£aliḥli kull zamÄn wa makÄn) as aspired by the salÄf al-á¹£aliḥ.

Abstract

Pendidikan Agama Islam dan Budi Pekerti (PAIBP), published by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2014 and 2017 book was the main source for high schools in Indonesia. But, a previous study found that this book contained some radicalism value meanwhile, the government tried so hard to eradicate it through a moderation campaign. However, this book still contains some themes of moderation in the discussions such as unity (ukhuwah), tolerance and democracy which would be the focused of this study. This research then aims to review some article of the Qur`an that contains moderation value to gain explanation, discussion and easy implementation. The framework of this study was ideology critics by Jurgen Habermas which consisted of two steps of research to find technical understanding and reflected understanding. The technical understanding was found by several field investigations using observation in all 9 public senior high schools in Rembang regency and interviews with the PAI teacher and also the students from all levels with snowballing sampling. This study found that technical understanding of this book stopped at normative-definitive comprehensions while the implementations could not be done because this book's explanations were too short. It was also influenced by the understanding of the teachers and the teaching style of the teachers that was very subjective. The only implantation founded was reading the qur’an verses by ilm tajwid. The reflective understanding was found by a series explorations of Qur’anic exegesis books and several Islamic classical literature. The results of this study shows that this book could be upgraded by (1) extended the meaning of ukhuwah (2) limitations of the practice of tolerance and (3) additions discourse of democracy in the field of sharia and contextualization of democracy in the context of Indonesia.
