Abstract

agricultural waste. One of  utilization of the agricultural waste is tea waste that into briquettes as an alternative energy to replace fuel oil and gas, as well as a raw material for the manufacture of activated charcoal. That is why the author made a cast to simplify charcoal briquette printing making process. This study used literature study, cast making, instruments testing and parameters observation. Parameters measured were was capacity, moisture content, ash content, heating value, economic analysis, break even point, net present value, and internal rate of return. The results showed the capacity was 2,907kg tool / h, average water content was 2,6%, average ash content was 6,357%, average calorific value was 5740,70 cal / g, cost was Rp. 25.750,46 for the first year, Rp. 25.453,35 for the second year, Rp. 25.354,45 for the third year, Rp. 25.305,08 for the fourth year, and Rp. 25.275,53 for the fifth year, the break even point 952,89 kg /year for the first year, 513,71 kg /year for the second year, 367,52 kg / year for the third year, 367,52 kg / year for the fourth year and 250,86 kg / year for the fifth year, net present value of Rp. 1.135.273.634,79, internal rate of return was 12,74%, its mean that this equipment was worthy to used. keywords: printing tools, charcoal briquettes, tea waste.

Abstract

Food processing by cooking needs a special technique to maintain the nutrition of the food. This research was aimed to measure the effective frying temperature in vacuum frying (vacuum pump type). This research was carried out at Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture USU in March – April 2014 using non factorial randomized block design with five levels, i.e. 75oC, 80oC, 85oC, 90oC, and 95oC. Parameters observed were water content, loss of oil, organoleptic value, and economic analysis. The results showed that frying temperature had highly significant effects on water content, loss of oil, and organoleptic value, but it showed that there was no highly significant effect on taste. Economic analysis showed that investment with this equipment was non - profitable. Keywords: Snake Fruit, Temperature, Chips, and Vacuum Frying.

Abstract

This research was done to test the effect of grinder edge on the effective capacity of the equipment,  percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield. This research was using non factorial completely randomized design. It was found that the capacity of the equipment,  percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield on two grinder edge are 12,72 kg/hour, 7,00%, dan 93,00% respectively.  On three grinder edge are 16,44 kg/hour, 7,67%, dan 92,33% respectively. On four grinder edge are 16,01 kg/hour, 9,00% dan 91,00% respectively. The results showed  that number of grinder edge had significant effect on the effective capacity, and had no effect on the percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield. Keywords : Grinder edge, grinder, arabica coffeaa

Abstract

Coconut plant is a plant of life, because all its parts can be utilized to meet human needs. One of the utilization is grated coconut that can to be used in making bread, biscuits, sweets, its milk and coconut flour. This study was aimed to examine the effect of the number of rod in manufacturing of desiccated coconut on the performance of the grated coconut dryer. This research was conducted in March and May 2015 in the Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, by literature study, testing equipment and parameters observation. Parameters measured were moisture content, percentage of materials left in the appliance, yield and organoleptic tests. The results showed that the number of rod was not significantly affected the water content, yield and organoleptic tests and significantly affected to the percentage of material left in the appliance. Key words: desiccated coconut, grated coconut dryer, stirring bar.

Abstract

Chopping is one way of size reduction of solids into smaller pieces to produce solids of a certain size. Chopping with a mechanical equipment has not much been done due to lack of knowledge and limitation of existing equipment of the farmers. In fact, if it can be done can increase farmers' income. The aim of the research was to test the performance of oil palm fronds chopper machine designed by Agricultural Mechanization Unit in North Sumatra Province using oil palm fronds as a raw material and analyze its operating costs. Observed parameters were effective capacity, yield of chopping, the percentage of materials left behind, and fuel consumption of the equipment. The results showed that the effective capacity of the equipment was 287,29Kg/hour. Chopping yield was 94,2%. The percentage of materials left behind was 5,2%. Fuel consumption was 0,44 L/hour. Cost of Analysis was Rp. 53,9/Kg for the first year, Rp. 54,29/Kg for the second year, Rp. 54,48/Kg for the third year, Rp.54,79/Kg for the fourth year, and Rp. 55,12/Kg for the fifth year. BEP was 62.209 Kg in the first year, 65.862 Kg in the second year, 67.759 Kg in the third year, 70.755 Kg in the fourth year and 73.947 Kg in the fifth year. The IRR was 39,17%. Key words: chopper machine, oil palm fronds, operating costs, performance

Abstract

One of agricultural mechanization excellence is to improve agricultural product value compered to the row one. Beside melinjo that has been popular to become chip, cempedak’s seed, jackfruit’s seed, and durian’s seed else can be processed to be come chip. This research was aimed at testing the effective commodity types on chip’s maker machine. Therefore, a research had been conducted at Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture USU in February 2015 until March 2015 using cempedak seed, durian seed and jackfruit seed. Parameters observed were effective capacity on and organoleptic test. The results showed that the best capacity using durian seeds i.e 14,44 kg/hour. Keywords: Seed Chip Molder, cempedak seeds, durian seeds and jackfruit seeds.
