Abstract

The process in making liquid soap from used cooking oil is an interesting thing to know. This research was held to design, construct, test, and analyze economic value of liquid soap stirrer made from used cooking oil. The parameters observed were water content, free fatty acid (FFA), alcohol insoluble part, effective capacity, yield, and economic analysis. Based on this research, it was summerized that effective capacity of this equipment was 20,26 l/hr. Yield percentage was 97,8%. Basic cost for the  first to fifth year were Rp 735,95/l, Rp 738,08/l, Rp 738,38/l, Rp 739,76/l and Rp 741,24/l. Respectively break event point was 440,53 l/year. Net present value with 7,5% rate was Rp 378.115.195 and internal rate of return was 48,36%. Keywords: liquid soap, used oil cook, effective capacity, yield, economic analysis

Abstract

One of the unit process is slicing. This study was aimed to examine the effect of blade distance on the effective capacities,  percentage of perfect  sliced onion and percentage of left onion at mechanical slicer. The research was conducted in November 2014 to February 2015 in the Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, using non-factorial completely randomized design(CRD). The parameters were the effective capacity of equipment and the percentage of perfect slicer, percentage of broken materials. The results showed that the effective capacity was 29,02kg/hr, 32,99kg hr and 42,14kg/hr respectively, the percentage of unsliced onion was 4,17%,4,00% and 3,17%respectively, and percentage of left onion at the mechanical slicer was 4,33%, 4,00%, 3,00% respectively. Keywords:blade, slicing, capacity.

Abstract

Compost is a result  of plant waste decomposition that caused by microorganism decomposition. Therefore it needs a decomposer to fasten organic decomposition. This research was done in April until August 2015 in Soil Laboratory, Agricultural Technology Research Agency of North Sumatera and Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, USU, Medan, using non factorial completely randomized design with four types of MOL, i, e, orange MOL, mango MOL, pinneapple MOL, and papaya MOL. Measured parametres were comparison of C/N, pH and yield. The results showed that there was no different effect given by orange MOL, mango MOL, pinneapple MOL, and papaya MOL in the case of C/N, pH and yield. Key words: Compost, decomposer, palm frond.

Abstract

The process of lemang cooking is very simple and has some weakness that can be minimalised. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of temperature in vertical typelemang cooking appliance. This research was carried out at Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture USU in April – May 2015 using non factorial randomized block design with three levels, i.e. 95oC, 100oC, and 105oC. Parameters observed were effective capacity and organoleptic values. The results showed that cooking temperature had significant effect on the organoleptic test. But had no significant effect on  the effective capacityof the appliance. Keywords: Glutinous rice, Lemang’s, glutinous rice cooker appliance.

Abstract

Distillation is one of the ways to take up patchouli oil that contained in the leaves, the example is leaf clovers. Leaf clovers has the high oil content with euganol that reaches of 85%. The postharvest processing’s purpose is to make the agricultural product have a higher economic value compared to the product without processed. The purpose of this research was to design, build, test and analyze the economic value of patchouli oil direct steam distillation type. The parameters observed were effective capacity and economic analysis. Based on this research, it were summarized that the effective capacity of the equipment was 13,33 ml/hour. Economic analysis, basic costs for the first to the fifth year was Rp. 1.054,77/ml, Rp. 880,48/ml, Rp. 822,67/ml, Rp. 793,82/ml and Rp. 776,55/ml. Break even point (BEP) for the first to the fifth year was 247,17 ml/year, 133,02 ml/year, 95,16 ml/year, 76,27 ml/year and 64,95 ml/year. Net present value (NPV) 6% was Rp. 12.060.105 whereas NPV 8% was Rp. 10.793.704,29 and Internal rate of return this equipment was 27,04%. Keywords : leaf clovers, distillation, machine
