Abstract

This research article discusses the use of chemical weapons in Syria. This study discusses the representation of Assad’s regime in two CNN articles since there is an assumption that Assad’s regime and its alliances are the responsible ones for the chemical weapon issue in Syria. The data is analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis by Van Dijk as the grand theory so that it is examined by using macro and micro level analysis. This study shows that these articles present the negative representation of Assad’s regime. It can be seen from the negative lexical choices which are used by the writers to describe Assad’s regime and it also can be seen from the writers attempts to present the US’s arguments by trying to legitimize it by frequently using verbal reaction in schematic analysis and the writers of the articles also struggle to hide another version of truth which stated that the responsible one for the use of chemical weapon in Syria is the rebels groups

Abstract

This study aims to describe how the Middle East Media represent the Indonesian government and the executed Indonesian migrant workers in the case of Indonesian migrant workers executions in Saudi Arabia. The data are analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis focuses on the representation of social actors by Van Leeuwen (2008). This theory examines how the social actors are presented or excluded in the representation. In addition, the analysis of this study is also supported by the lexical analysis based on Richardsons theory (2007) of analyzing news text: level of analysis. This study uses descriptive analysis method since the data are analyzed based on the indicators, categories or strategies in the theories which are used to analyze the data. This study found that the Indonesian government is represented as the party who has done many efforts to save Indonesian migrant workers from the executions abroad but on the other side, Indonesian government is also represented as hypocritical party since Middle East Media nominate the Indonesian government as the party that still implement the death penalty. Generally, the lexical analysis show that the executed Indonesian migrant workers are represented as the cruel killers although several media present another information which show their reasons to do the crimes such as self-defense and suffering mental-illness.

Abstract

This study discusses how the representation of executed Indonesian migrant workers in the case of their executions in Saudi Arabia from 2015 to 2018 in The Jakarta Post news articles. This study is analyzed by using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which specifically uses the Social Actor Representation (SAR) theory from van Leeuwen (2008). In analyzing the data, this study is also supported by the theory of levels of analysis from Richardson (2007) to analyze the text producers’ lexical choice and the theory of transitivity from Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) to analyze the role allocation. This study shows that The Jakarta Post represents the executed Indonesian migrant workers negatively. It can be seen from the text producers’ ways to include the executed Indonesian migrant workers in the representation. Moreover, The Jakarta Post also uses the words ‘kill’, ‘knife to death’, ‘stab’ etc. to describe the executed Indonesian migrant workers.
