Abstract

This work is an analysis of Giddenss thinking on nation-state. It is a discussion of correlation between state, society and modernity. Modernity, in his analysis on nation-state, is placed as the important stand point for the understanding. Modernity itself has four institutional dimensions: heightened surveillance, capitalistic enterprise, industrial production and consolidation of centralized control of the means of violence. None is wholly reducible to any of the others. Two key questions will be answered by this study. First, what is modernity? How does it work? Second, what is nation-state?Whatapproach did Giddens use for analyzing nation-state? How does nation-state work in the frame of modernity? This work tries to answer all questions above. It is addresses to explore historical problematical reasons of his study on nation-state and then describe its characteristics. The most important thing, it is intended to analyse relationship between state, society and modernity in the development of nation-state.

Abstract

Environmental issues have been largely discussed in development discourse since early 1970s, which have led to the idea of Sustainable Development. Despite of its importance, the debate on environment has been occupied by a tendency to put ‘nature’ and ‘human’ as well as ‘crisis of nature’ and ‘crisis of justice’ in static dichotomies. This article challenges this idea by arguing that the most central matter in environment and development discourses does not lie on ‘human’ and ‘nature’ per se but on the relationship between the two. The challenge of sustainable development is to continuously redefine relationships between human and nature. Using analytical frameworks of Dryzek (1997) and Nygren (1998) this article emphasizes the articulation of discourse repertoires by drawing on a case study among Indonesian environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). This study finds out that Indonesian environmental NGOs often incorporate elements of various discourses. This phenomenon shows that environmental NGOs actively involve in the process of negotiation to redefine new borders of sustainable development in Indonesia.

Abstract

Democratisation in post-Suharto Indonesia has significantly improved political participation, lifting expectation of bringing better political representation. However, various studies prove that such representation is unable to be immediately achieved since the existing democratic institutions remain dominated by oligarchic groups. The societal struggle to gain representation, therefore, is increasingly becoming a critical issue in contemporary Indonesian politics. This article discusses the dynamics of such struggle through the strategy that we have developed and called 'mixed politics'. This refers to the blurring of borders between civil and political society, as well as formal and informal institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digitalization of democracy in the implementation of e-voting in Pilkades in Bantaeng Regency, South Sulawesi. This study is based on qualitative research by gathering data through observation, interviews and questionnaires. The results of this study indicate that, first, the implementation of e-voting policies as a political innovation is carried out by formulating policies, namely compiling regulation as the first step in the process of public policy innovation. Second, the process of implementing e-voting consist of several stages, namely the stages of the preparation, nomination, voting, final recapitulation and inauguration where the preparatory stage to the final recapitulation is not much different from the conventional Pilkades implementation (paper based). The difference lies more in the use of electronic systems. The form of using electronic application in voting through the direct electronic recording (DRE) system. Third, evaluation of the e-voting policy based on the five aspects evaluated related to the implementation of e-voting in village head elections, as a whole that the five aspects which include effectiveness, efficiency, fairness, adequacy and responsiveness can be stated that the process has been carried out properly in accordance with the indicators or standard e-voting implementation criteria in village head election. Furthermore, evaluation of fie aspects is also a concern for the government regarding improvement to the implementation of e-voting in village head election. With improvements in some of these aspects, it can be stated that the application of e-voting in village head election as a political innovation can be continued as part of the process of digitizing democracy.
