Abstract

People can communicate their ideas, thoughts and feeling to other people in oral or written form of language. The communication mostly can run well if it is done by using a native language or a language that people understand best. By contrast, a lot of people usually feel difficult when they must express their opinions and feelings in speaking or writing by using a foreign language or a language that they do not master. In the con text of Indonesia,particularly at faculty of Social and Politics, University of Tulungagung, English is one foreign language that the majority students do not master yet. It is not surprising that they are less competent in English writing skill. They are hindered by lack knowledge of grammar,vocabulary and do not have sufficient ability to organize ideas in a good writing.Under this regard, helpful teaching media like pictures are supposed to be a possible prescription as scaffolding to guide them producing well organized writing. Further, the use of pictures can increase the students’ achievements in writing ability.

Abstract

Using English as a medium of instruction provides linguistic benefits to the students. English which is used can elevate vocabulary, grammar and language functions of English. Besides, the students get  more chances to practice  writing, speaking, reading and listening during teaching and learning activities. Under this belief, the teachers are prescribed to be competent not only in content of subjects but also English. The teachers possession of  vocabulary, grammar, and language functions is a must.It is only with the clarity of English,  the teachers can help the students comprehend what the teachers feel think, instruct, command, describe, explain, clarify and so forth. This research project works with the identification of structural features and language function of English used by 3 selected Biology teachers of different Junior High Schools who are competent in English and the content of subject. This research is a qualitative design.Abstrak:Penggunaan Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam proses kegiatan belajar mengajar dapat memberikan manfaat untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa. Siswa mendapatkan pengetahuan tambahan  tentang kosa kata  dan kaidah bahasa Inggris dari materi atau referensi yang sedang dipelajari, bahasa inggris yang dipergunakan guru dan teman. Selain dua  manfaat tersebut kemampuan siswa membaca, berbicara,  menulis serta mendengarkan akan dilatih ketika mereka harus mengerjakan tugas-tugas gurunya seperti membuat laporan praktikum, berdikusi, tanya jawab dan mempresentasikan hasil kerjanya. Dalam perspektif ini, guru harus memiliki kemampuan di bidang kosa kata, kaidah bahasa dan kemampuan menggunakan dua komponen bahasa sesuai dengan tujuan intruksionalnya seperti misalnya menjelaskan materi, bertanya, memberi tugas dan lain-lainnya sehingga tujuan belajar pembelajaran dapat dicapai. Abstract

Learning English as a language which is used by the majority people of the world socially, culturally, economically and politically   has many advantages .At the same time, the student whose a language which is different in the linguistics rules and cultural or social norms often face some difficulties to be proficient in learning to using the English. This fact happens because the language is not used in the community where the students conduct their daily activities. Being aware of some obstacles of the students, building the student?s motivation is one of the ways that can eliminate the problems faced by the students. The desire or the interest of the students in acquiring the knowledge of English plays important roles to elevate the student?s achievement. There are two important aspects related with the building of motivation to learn English. The first deals with the motivation to gaining the knowledge of English in the context of social-educational.(classroom-learning context). The second relates to pre-actional, actional and post-actional motivation. The later aspect of motivation asserts that the individual perception of the task, atmosphere, the course content, materials, facilities, personal characteristic of students the roles of the teacher  influence the individual?s classroom learning motivation.

Abstract

The essential function of the language helps people sharing what they think and feel by oral or written form of language to others. Empirically and theoretically noted, the communication often fails delivering the message if the language used is not the native language of the communicators. Misunderstanding sometimes occurs not only because of the meanings of words used look unfamiliar but also the lack of ability to arrange the true sentences to express idea, thought and feeling. In the context of Indonesia, particularly at faculty of Social and Politics, University of Tulungagung, the students ‘attainment in English is not good when they are assigned to have the writing practices. Their poor mastery in vocabulary and grammar make them difficult to finish the writing tasks. Having look what happen to the students, the English teacher should be innovative to perform the teaching performance which is helpful to tackle the student’s problem. Using pictures can be a good choice to guide and ease the students to produce a well-organized writing.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of community service (PKlM) with the format of Millennial Peer Counselor (MPC) through reality counseling at Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Pesantren) Nurul Jannah, Kudus are as follow (1) provides insight into the importance of counseling services and the process of providing assistance to the needy; (2) equip the students of Islamic Boarding School (santri) with Reality counseling skills in finding alternative solutions for the ones who want to consult; (3) generate the peer counselor agents so that students can be referrals to friends. Soon after the program finished Santri has a special ambassador or cadre who will share and work together to solve their daily psychological problems. The results of community service include (a) Santri get insight about communication techniques and counseling that can be provided as peer counselors; (b) Institutions can map psychological problems in order to improve the quality of learning and social in Islamic Boarding School; (c) Through Millenial Peer Counselor, institutions are able to establish special bureaus or special units related to various psychological services aimed at students such as Islamic Counseling Centers, and (d) institutions have a broader opportunity to develop students with additional competencies to millennial peer counselor ambassadors such as Muslim motivator, young instructors, and self-development trainers for fellow students and the environment around the cottage. Abstrak Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKlM) dengan format pendampingan Milenial Peer Counselor (MPC) melalui konseling realitas di Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jannah, Kudus antara lain (1) memberikan wawasan tentang pentingnya layanan konseling dan proses pemberian bantuan kepada yang membutuhkan; (2) membekali santri dengan keterampilan konseling Realitas dalam menemukan alternatif solusi bagi konselinya; (3) mencetak agen-agen konselor sebaya agar para santri dapat menjadi rujukan teman curhat. Hal tersebut sesuai dengan hasil yang didapatkan setelah kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan yakni Santri memiliki duta atau kader khusus yang dapat menjadi rujukan mereka dalam menyelesaikan masalah sehari-hari (Daily Problem) terutama yang bersifat psikologis. Hasil pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat antara lain (a) Santri memperoleh wawasan tentang teknik komunikasi dan konseling yang dapat menjadi bekal menjadi konselor sebaya; (b) Lembaga dapat melakukan pemetaan terhadap permasalahan psikologis santri demi meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran dan sosial di pesantren; (c) Melalui Millenial Peer Counselor lembaga mampu mendirikan biro khusus atau unit khusus berkaitan dengan berbagai layanan psikologis yang ditujukan untuk santri seperti Pusat Konseling Islam, dan (d) Lembaga mempunyai kesempatan yang lebih luas untuk mengembangkan santri dengan kompetensi tambahan kepada duta konselor sebaya milenial seperti kompetensi motivator muslim, instruktur muda, dan trainer pengembangan diri bagi sesama santri dan lingkungan sekitar pondok.

Abstract

The purpose of doing research is to have the investigation on the students’ belief when Duo lingo application is applied in the class of vocabulary and to describe the justification of the advantages using the Duo lingo to empower the vocabulary enrichment. The students of English Study Program in State Islamic College as Pre Service –teachers have participated in this study. The data were collected by the questionnaire distribution and the interview methods. The data analysis uses the qualitative description. The result of the study exposes the facts that the respondents agree the Duo lingo can facilitate the vocabulary learning achievement. The medium labelled Duo lingo makes the students easy and interesting in learning the English word knowledge. The interview with the sample of informants suggests the testimony that the young learners can use the app overtime as far as they want. They are free to set or make up the schedule of lesson session. One more meaningful thing found in the application is that the English is spoken by the native speaker. By performing the English of the native speaker can be a model or master for the students. They get the chance to exercise repeating the word or the sentence spoken by the native speaker correctly.
