Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the normal flora in the oral cavity, but these bacteria can change to be pathogen if there are predisposing factors such as changes in quantities of bacteria and decreasing of the immune response of the body. One of the ways to prevent is to inhibit the activity of these bacteria using antibiotics. Ampicillin and tetracycline are the broad-spectrum antibiotics that can inhibit the growth of positive and negative gram bacteria. This research was a laboratory experimental with Kirby-Bauer method and using CLSI standard. Total sample are 16 discs of ampicillin and 16 discs of tetracycline then placed on MHA media contain Staphylococcus aureus to see the inhibition power. The result showed that the averages of inhibition zone of ampicillin is 36,64 mm while tetracycline is 25,58 mm. Independent sample t- test showed that p<0,01 which means there is a significantly difference between ampicillin and tetracycline. Ampicillin and tetracycline can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with sensitive categories. Ampicillin is more sensitive and effective than tetracycline to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

Microleakage defined as the clinically undetectable passage of bacteria, fluids, molecules or ions between a cavity wall and the restorative material. Microleakage tends to occur in Class V cavities. It is caused by marginal adaptation which is more difficult in class V cavities. Microfiller composite resin is developed and indicated for areas that not require a large pressure. As the development of dental materials, it has been developed a composite resin base material that is known as resin-modified glass ionomer cement. This material has purposed to reduce the limitation of conventional glass ionomer cement and take the advantage of the composite resin material. The aim of this study was to evaluate microleakage difference of microfiler composite resin restoration with resin-modified glass ionomer cement restorations in class V anterior teeth cavities. The methode of this study used experimental laboratory through in vitro process . Thirty two class V cavities were prepared on labial surfaces of extracted human anterior teeth. Samples were divided into two groups. Group I included sixteen samples that have had restorated with microfiller composite. Group II included sixteen samples that have had restorated with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. The samples were immersed into aquabides solution for 24 hours. After that, the samples were immersed into 1% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. All samples sectioned longitudinally and analyzed for microleakage as dye penetration using a stereomicroscope. Student t-test were used for statistical analysis. The resulting data showed no significantly difference between two groups. Key Word : Microleakage, microfiller composite resin, resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), class V cavities.

Abstract

Covid-19 is an infectious disease that attacks the human respiratory system that can cause respiratory infections, ranging from the common cold to serious illnesses, this disease is caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. The process of Covid-19 transmission can occur through direct contact, droplets that are spread through coughs or sneezes from infected people and aerosols in dental care procedures. Aerosols can be generated from dental procedures such as, the use of high-powered tools requiring air pressure and water spray. The purpose of writing is to describe the potential of aerosols in dental practice as a medium for transmission of Covid-19. Aerosols in dental care procedures have the potential to pose a risk in transmitting Covid-19. This is because aerosols are found in the Covid-19 virus which can contaminate surfaces, dental equipment, and the air around the treatment environment which can endanger dentists, staff, and patients.

Abstract

Background: Dentigerous cyst is a cyst that forms around the crown of an unerupted tooth. It begins when fluid accumulates in the layers of reduced enamel epithelium or between the epithelium and the crown of the unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts attach to the cementoenamel junction. Some dentigerous cysts are eccentric, developing from the lateral aspect of the follicle so that they occupy an area beside the crown instead of above the crown. In the case of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary, lesions appear to develop in the lateral aspect, so proper imaging is needed to see the expansion of the lesion. A modality that can be used to see the location and expansion of dentigerous cysts is by using a CBCT radiograph. Objective: Identification and interpretation of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary using CBCT radiography. Case Report: 12-year-old male came to the RSGM FKG Unpad bring a referral letter for CBCT photos. From the history it is known that the patient has a complaint of teeth that have not grown with swelling in the right maxilla. Case Management: Using CBCT, there were supernumerary and dentigerous cysts at 14,13. Sagittal, coronal and axial CBCT features show the position and condition of supernumerary, and give information about the location and expansion of dentigerous cyst at 14,13. Conclusion: CBCT provides a description of dentigerous cysts about location, lesion expansion, and involvement with surrounding tissue. CBCT provides an overview of lesions in sagittal, coronal and axial

Abstract

Background: The success of a removable denture can be determined by the good support of the mucosa and alveolar bone that underlies a denture. Visually and tactilely in the oral examination could not provide adequate information about the condition of the tissue under the submucosa. A panoramic radiograph can show anatomical considerations that influence the fabrication of a removable denture. Therefore, a panoramic radiograph of the patient can help reveal anomalous or pathological conditions in the patient's oral cavity. Purpose: To describe the importances of panoramic radiograph to identify lesions that are not clinically visible in the oral. Case: This article reports a patient with complaints of discomfort in the previous denture. On clinical examination found a prominance on the lower jaw in the left side of the mandible and it was pain on palpation. The patient was referred to radiology for a panoramic radiograph. From this panoramic radiograph, a suspected complex odontoma was found in the lower left posterior region. The patient was immediately referred to the Oral Surgery department for surgery. Conclusion: Panoramic radiographs play an important role in helping to establish a diagnosis of tissue that is not visible during clinical examination. This case demonstrates that with the aid of radiology, a preprosthetic treatment plan can be established to prepare the supporting tissue for removable dentures.

Abstract

The condition of oral cavity greatly influences the patient's dental care and treatment. In prosthodontic treatments, the anatomy and arrangement of the teeth is one of the factors that must be considered in order to be able to plan a treatment design. Deep bite with larger overlap of the maxillary and mandibular incisors make the lateral load borne by the teeth become greater. This can cause damage to the tooth and periodontal tissues, as well as failure of the denture. This article reports on the treatment of edentulous of the tooth 21 with deep bite with convetional brigde PFM. Clinical examination showed that there was an overlap between the upper central incisors and the lower incisors by 5 mm and there was a toothwear defect in the form of attrition on teeth 31 and 41. The patient was planned to have a 3 unit conventional bridge made with porcelain fused to metal with a metal backing design to reduce the thickness of the preparation in palatal area and minimize contact with opposing teeth. At the insertion, the patient's occlusion is checked and evaluated so that there are no premature contacts and occlusal interference during centric and eccentric movements. The patient is satisfied with the results of the treatment. Treatment with fixed partial denture in deepbite must be well designed and planned to achieve successful treatment.

Abstract

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this case report is to describe radiographically the specific features of bifid mandibular condyle that frequently found incidentally on panoramic radiographs. Case Report: A 24-year-old man came to the Installation of Dental Radiology RSGM UNPAD brought a referral letter for a panoramic photograph. From anamnesis is known patient have complaints of pain in the jaw joints left and right at the time of open mouth. Panoramic radiographs show mesioangular dental impaction of 48, and edentulous tooth 36 and presence of bifid condyle on the right and left condyle. Bifid condyle usually becomes incidental finding on routine panoramic radiographic examination. Bifid condyle features can be shown by depression or notch on the superior surface of condyle. Bifid condyle can provide a "heart-shaped" from the frontal view. For a definite feature can be seen with other modality such as CBCT. Sometimes there is also a change in the mandibular fossa to compensate the morphological changes of the condyle. Conclusion: Bifid condyle mandible is a variation in the shape of the condyle whose cause is not known with certainty. The bifid condyle gives the "heart-like" appearance that is often found on accidental panoramic radiographs. Generally, cases of BMC do not require treatment unless they cause symptoms.

Abstract

The number of elderly is predicted to continue to increase globally, including in Indonesia. According to data from the Central Statistical Authority, there has been an increase of 7 per cent in the percentage of elderly persons over more than a decade (2010-2021) to 10.82 per cent. The elderly age group is a highly susceptible group to a decrease in oral function caused by aging factors. Decreased oral function has a wide range of negative effects on the physical and psychological life of the elderly. Disorders perceived as a result of this condition will affect the nutritional intake of the elderly and also lead to a decrease in self-confidence, thus having a major impact on the quality of life of older people. The purpose of this study is to analyze the occurrence of xerostomy due to decreased function of the oral cavity of the elderly in UNAND RSGM. The research uses cross-sectional design, using total sampling techniques. A total of 30 elderly patients at UNAND's RSGM are expected to contribute to the study. Measurement of the state of decreased oral function is carried out with clinical examination, and subjective, then conducted interviews with questionnaires that have been tested validity and rehabilitation, in order to find out the determinant factors of decrease of oral function of elderly patients in UNAND RSGM. This research is in line with the UNAND Research Master Plan and Roadmap on the sub-theme of health and the results of this research will be able to be used as consideration of path determination of patient care plan and as educational material on the development of improvement of quality of life and health of the elderly. The results of the study showed a rate of xerostomy of 31.4%, a condition of hyposalivation of 14.3%, and there was no influence on the occurrence of xerostomy and hyposalyvation on the sociodemographic characteristics of elderly patients in the RSGM of the University of Andalas (p>0,05).
