Abstract

Previous film studies focusing on gender stereotypes have been sufficiently conducted, yet what remains understudied is the study of film audience about dynamic gender stereotypes shown in one film. Conducting film audience study with the issue of dynamic gender stereotype allows discussions about audience’s perceptions, awareness and underlying knowledge of gender stereotypes. This study attempts to unravel responses collected from thirteen audience of Nancy Meyer’s “The Intern” (2015) and formulates two research objectives i.e. first, to discuss how the audience of “The Intern” perceive the dynamics of gender stereotype depicted in the film and, second, to examine the underlying insights of their perceptions. The incorporated theories are film audience study, serving also as methodological approach, and the discourse of gender stereotype and its changing perspectives. The finding and discussion show that the audience of “The Intern” perceive the inclusion of gender stereotypes and its dynamic change in the film, and their perceptions are followed by several reasons and insights: the story-line of “The Intern” and the audience’s prior knowledge about gender stereotypes. Awareness and sensibility of gender stereotypes are also revealed after watching “The Intern”. Lastly, discussion about the intersection of the audience’s prior knowledge with the exposure about gender stereotype from various resources is also carried out.

Abstract

Nganjuk Regency, located in East Java, is known as an agricultural production area. In the past, rice was an expensive food commodity, leading the community to seek rice substitutes. One of the alternatives was the utilization of various traditional plant lexicons such as tales, gembili, uwi, garut, ganyong, gadung, suweg, and kentang ireng. The utilization of these plant lexicons by the Nganjuk community reflects their close connection with nature. This study aims to provide a descriptive and qualitative depiction of the usage of rice substitute lexicons in the culture of Nganjuk society. Research data was collected through interviews and observations. Interviews were conducted to understand the functions and meanings of using rice substitute lexicons in Nganjuk society. The findings of this study provide a deep understanding of the diversity of traditional plant lexicons used as rice substitutes in Nganjuk Regency. It was found that mbote / kimpul, gembili, uwi, garut, ganyong, gadung, suweg, and kentang ireng are plants that have long been known and utilized by the Nganjuk community as valuable sources of carbohydrates. The utilization of these lexicons is not limited to the past but continues to the present. The community's connection with nature is reflected in their knowledge of these plant lexicons. The Nganjuk community has a profound understanding of the benefits and uses of each plant. They appreciate biodiversity and integrate this knowledge into their daily lives. However, this research also reveals a shift occurring in the younger generation. In the modern era, with abundant availability and the dominance of rice consumption, these traditional plant lexicons tend to be forgotten and less known by the current generation. This highlights the need to preserve the knowledge and traditional practices related to plant lexicons as rice substitutes. In this context, this research makes a significant contribution to enriching the understanding of cultural wealth and traditional values related to food in Nganjuk Regency. These findings can serve as a basis for developing efforts in preservation, education, and promotion of the use of traditional plant lexicons as healthy and sustainable rice substitutes.

Abstract

The implementation of Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (Freedom to Learn) in Indonesia urges universities to adapt and set changes in learning activities. One of the changes is the implementation of Project-Based Learning to increase students’ activeness and creativity. This research aims to assess students’ creative thinking on the implementation of Project-Based Learning. This research was a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Purposive sampling was chosen in this research because the sample was chosen on purpose, i.e., those who joined literary criticism class. There were ten students who played as the subject of the research. It used observation sheets and questionnaires to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed to get reliable results of students’ creative thinking assessment. The result showed that some students (40%) strongly agreed that they faced some difficulties in developing their creative thinking. Most of their problems were about developing ideas into coherence text, structuring or organizing a good text, and choosing appropriate vocabulary to avoid repetition in the text. Students also found that project-based learning allowed them to develop their creative thinking in forms of independence, confidence, creativity, tolerance, and leadership. Regarding the result, it can be concluded that project-based learning is proven to be beneficial in developing students’ creative thinking, though they find some obstacles during the process.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL), aspects of PBL, and teacher’s and students’ perceptions about PBL. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Cilacap, taking 34 tenth grade students as the sample from X IPS 1 and an English teacher as a participant. The data were collected using observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The data were analysed using Miles and Huberman’s (1984) four types of analytical activity and presented descriptively. The result shows that the implementation of PBL in on the chosen sample is in line with the stages of PBL implementation entailing: 1) the teacher organizes the students to a problem, 2) the teacher organizes the students to learn, 3) the teacher as the participant helps the independent inquiry and groups, 4) the teacher helps the students develop and present the work, and 5) the teacher analyses and evaluates the problem-solving process. Then, the analysis of the aspects of PBL suggests such things as 1) the problem as the point in PBL, 2) the students’ discussion activities, 3) the teacher’s help in students’ discussion, 4) the students’ activeness, and 5) the teacher’s and students’ perception about PBL in reading skill. The teacher positively thinks that the materials in reading skills match with the PBL teaching model. It was found that PBL leads the students to discuss and train their activeness, ability to learn to solve problems, share ideas, and work cooperatively in a group. Another finding also denotes that they think that PBL is one interesting model which can support them to understand the text, because students can get insight from their friends and their teacher when having discussion.
