Abstract

Sebagaimana diketahui oleh khalayak bahwa Indonesia mempunyai beragam bahasa daerah yang kaya dengan dialek. Dialek tersebut dapat memperkenalkan komunitas yang mendiami daerah tertentu, seperti halnya dialek bahasa Jawa, kepada masyarakat luas. Tujuan penelitan ini adalah untuk mendiskripsikan ragam dialek bahasa Jawa serta untuk menemukan ragam dialek bahasa Jawa yang hampir punah di daerah Kabupaten Lamongan Provinsi Jawa Timur. Pendekatan kualitatif diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ragam dialek bahasa Jawa yang dipakai untuk komunikasi oleh komunitas tersebut dapat dikategorikan ke dalam (1) ragam kata meliputi ragam diksi, (2) ragam pengucapan dan intonasi dalam kelompok kalimat positif, negatif, pertanyaan dan perintah, dan (3) ragam kalimat yang diidentifikasi dari struktur kata,  dalam dua kategori– struktur kata sederhana dengan satu suku kata dan dua atau lebih suku kata, dan struktur kata bentukan dari imbuhan, reduplikasi dan kombinasi–dan kompleksitas kalimat yang memenuhi tiga tipe yaitu kalimat sederhana yang dimodifikasi, kalimat majemuk, dan kalimat majemuk bertingkat. Selain itu, ragam kata dialek bahasa Jawa yang hampir punah dikategorikan ke dalam ragam pengucapan dan intonasi, dan ragam kalimat.

Abstract

Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa masalah psikologis yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama dalam novel Pintu karya Fira Basuki dari sudut pandang psikologi eksistensial. Desain deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis isi diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masalah psikologis yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama dalam novel tersebut dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam tema-tema eksistensialisme seperti (1) kebersamaan, cinta, dan konflik, (2) kesepian, keterasingan, dan kecemasan, dan (3) kematian. Terlihat bahwa tokoh utama Bowo belum memiliki mental dewasa. Hal ini ditunjukkan dalam peristiwa yang menekan kehidupan batinnya. Jiwanya belum begitu kuat. Konsekwensinya, banyak hal menyentuh hidupnya dalam hal eksistensial. Hubungan cinta antara dia dan orang-orang di sekitarnya telah dibangun, tetapi tidak otentik. Mereka semuanya berposisi sebagai subyek. Akibatnya, konflik yang terjadi dalam hidupnya sangat kuat. Bowo sebagai individu juga merasakan kekosongan dan kesepian yang begitu kuat. Dalam menyikapi kondisi tersebut, yang sebenarnya diciptakan oleh dirinya sendiri, ia menerapkan konsep yang tidak otentik. Jadi, hal tersebut telah mengantarkannya ke dalam keterasingan. Abstract

This study is aimed at developing mind mapping strategy to improve the tenth-year students’ writing ability at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Mambaus Sholihin Gresik and focused on solving the problem of how the students generate and organize ideas for writing a topic. The design of the study is collaborative classroom action research. Both the researcher and his collaborator work together in cyclic activities – planning, implementing, observing and reflecting on the data gained from the teaching and learning process – which runs into three cycles, each of which covers four meetings. The findings show that by implementing mind mapping with the proper model developed, the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text improves. It is indicated by the improvement of the percentage of the students achieving the score greater than or equal to 65 and of the percentage of the students’ involvement in the writing activities during the implementation of mind mapping in the instructional process in Cycle I, II, and III. The improvement of the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text can be reached but it should follow the procedures of the proper model of mind mapping developed.

Abstract

This study was designed to develop appropriate listening materials based on the needs of users namely the teachers and the students of the English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R&D) design was applied in this study. The research subjects were four listening instructors and the first-semester students (freshmen) who encountered fourteen meetings of this on-going semester. The findings showed that (1) the stages of the listening materials development such as needs survey, developing materials, expert and instructors validation, revision, try out of materials, revision, and final product; (2) the product is in the form of compact disc recorded materials, an instructor’s guide, and a students’ worksheet; (3) the product consists of 14 units for semester 1; (4) the criteria for selecting materials are based on the existing syllabus and the criteria such as language, content, style of delivery, length, speed of delivery, attractiveness, practicality, level of difficulty and effectiveness; (5) the materials are appropriate  for the students since they are relevant to the students’ need, interest, and level of  students’ English ability; and (6) the listening activities can improve the students’ motivation to learn English.

Abstract

The study is aimed at developing the implementation of Writing Process Approach (WPA) to enhance the students’ skill in writing essay. The study employed Classroom Action Research. The subjects of the study were 15 university students enrolled in the writing class. The data were gained from writing task, observation and field notes. The findings show that the implementation of WPA with the proper model procedures developed can enhance the students’ skill in writing essay. Before the strategy was implemented, the percentage of the students achieving the score greater than or equal to C (56-70) was 40.00% (6 students of the class). However, after the strategy was implemented in Cycle I, it enhanced enough to 60.00% (9 students of the class), but this result did not meet the criteria of success set up in the study. Next, in Cycle II it increased slightly to 86.67% (13 students of the class). Thus, the enhancement of the students’ skill in writing essay can be reached but it should follow the proper model procedures of the implementation of WPA developed.Keywords: writing process approach, writing skill, essay writing

Abstract

The study is aimed at developing the Intensive-Extensive Reading Strategy (IERS) to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The study employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research. The subjects of the study were 32 students of the second semester of English Education Study Program of STAIN Palangka Raya in the 2010/2011 academic year. The data were gained from reading comprehension test, observation, field notes and questionnaire. The findings show that the implementation of IERS with the appropriate procedures developed can improve the students’ reading comprehension. It is indicated by the improvements of the percentage of the students achieving the score greater than or equal to C (60-69), and of the percentage of their involvement in the reading activities during the implementation of IERS in Cycles I and II. Consequently, the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension can be reached but it should follow the appropriate procedures of the implementation of IERS having been developed.Keywords: intensive-extensive reading strategy, reading comprehension, improvement

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the students’ perception of using Grammarly in their undergraduate thesis writing. It also explores the Grammarly application's strengths and weaknesses. A random sampling technique was used to collect the sample. The mixed-method sequential explanatory design was used in this study. The participants of the study were 35 students enrolled in the English Education program at IAIN Palangka Raya of 2017. The SPSS 25 program was used to examine the data. The data in this study was gathered through the use of a questionnaire and an interview. The study's results showed that 80.1% of the participants highly agreed. This study found that students gave positive responses to the use of Grammarly to assist them to analyze their thesis writing. The findings showed that the Grammarly application has several strengths such as clear and easy-to-understand feedback, time savings for students when checking grammar, and a useful feature. Meanwhile, Grammarly's weaknesses are that it can’t detect tenses that the students used in a time, students can’t download the feedback in form of a file and they must pay to access all of Grammarly's premium features. Keywords:  EFL Students Perception, Grammarly, Undergraduate Thesis Writing
