Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy on reading comprehension of the eight grade students’ of SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The method was used in this research is experimental research, the research focused on True experimental Design. The population in this research was all students of eight grade students at SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The number of the entire students is 163. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine class of the research. The subject of the study was the grade VIII – 2 and VIII – 3. There were 32 students each class. The researcher conducted research in two classes. The first class (VIII – 2) was as experiment class and the second class (VIII – 3) as control class. The experiment class was taught reading narrative text using Rank Ordering Retell Strategy, while control class was taught reading narrative text using conventional strategy (lecture method). In analyzing the data, the researcher used a quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement before conducted treatment the average of the students’ was 62.34 for experimental class and 64.22 for control class. While the average of the students’ achievement after conducted treatment in experimental class was 79.38 and in control class was 68.75. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the used of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy gave significant effect in reading comprehension than the use of conventional strategy (lecture method).Keywords:  rank ordering retell strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether significant effect of using Spot the Dictogloss to students’ listening skill at second grade students of SMAN 17 Batam in academic years 2015/2016. The research conducted experimental research in April 2016 and was held on second grade with the number of sample was 60 students of SMAN 17 Batam. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to determine class of the research. In this research, the writer conducted in two classes, XI IIS 1 and  XI IIS. The experimental class was taught listening by using spot the dictogloss, whereas the control class was taught listening by using running dictation strategy. Data was collected by multiple choice test. The result of the research showed there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement before conducted treatment which they had mean 40.5 for experimental class and 42.5 for control class. The average of the students’ achievement after conducted treatment in experimental class was 55.33 and in control class was 48.33. Based on this finding, it is suggested that spot the dictogloss could be used by the teacher to improve students’ listening skill.Keywords: spot the dictogloss, listening skill

Abstract

This study is to analyze the effect using “Text Twist 2” games as media to increase students vocabulary practice in study English. a learner to facing world challenge must prepare and ready themselves, to all pressure the students must meet this challenge controlled with English language. Many method that teacher show to make students understood about English language. To increase students abilities in speaking, reading, listening, and writing, teacher must make their skill can be productive and using in social. Reading that also as the way for vocabularies building.Research is the next objective from the writer as the way to find out the effect from this method. In this case, the writer choose Action Research and to try inprove this research with games. The result is Students can find out more vocabularies as modal to be ready in speaking English used “Text Twist 2” games can increase the students’ vocabulary practice in study English. The students’ average score is 74.42. It fulfills the criteria of success which is determined 70.00 or more. Keywords: text, increase, vocabulary,  games and Vocabulary

Abstract

This study analyzed of the Geisha  movie. This study used brown and Levinson theory of positive politeness (1987). The data of this study use the script of  “Geisha” movie. The data found,  the writer found out the data 111 of the  “Geisha” movie used of positive politeness as suggested by Brown and Levinson (1987).  The data applied by using qualitative research.. The objective of the study is to  identify the positive politeness Strategy and negative politeness Strategy. The result of the study is  the positive politeness Strategy 1, 10 times ( 4,87% ), Strategy 2,3 times ( 1,46% ),Strategy 3, 4 times (1,95%  ), Strategy 4, 20 times (9,75  ),Strategy 5, 4 times (1,95%  ), Strategy 6, 12 times (5,85% ), Strategy 7,  4 times ( 1,95% ), Strategy 8, 0 times ( 0 ), Strategy 9, 4 times ( 1,95% ), Strategy 10, 3 times ( 1,46% ), Strategy 11, 6 times (2,92%  ), Strategy 12, 13 times (6,34% ), Strategy 13, 20 times (9,75%  ), Strategy 14, 3 times (1,46%  ), and Strategy 15, 14 times ( 6,82% ). Abstract

Local culture is commonly used to characterize the experience of everyday life in specific, identifiable localities. It reflects ordinary people's feelings of appropriateness, comfort, and correctness—attributes that define personal preferences and changing tastes. The socio-cultural of Javanese especially in Jatilawang Banyumas. Through the trilogy of “Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk”. Through its discursive strategies, the text presents that the cultural life of Javanese people at that time is mostly influenced by Hinduism. In economic side, Javanese people generally work in farming field. Meanwhile, the cultural condition indicates the pluralistic life of Javanese community. The present research’s effort is to examine the representation of Javanese local culture in an old text entitled “Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk”. Framed generally by CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) theory and method, and particularly DHA (Discourse Historical Approach), the examination is focused on observing the five discursive strategies in micro- analysis under DHA, which includes strategies of nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivation, and mitigation. The discussion also highlights the socio-cultural background of Javanese people in that period to see its influence on the content of the text itself. Thus, the integration of two disciplinaries of historical study and linguistics is well-achieved.Keyword: historical discourse analysis, local culture, first book triogy “Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk”.
