Abstract

Culture as a result of human activities in their life and it is a reflection of the level of their ages. One of subculture is art, including fine arts which containing craft arts. The results of this art can be practical functional, aesthetics and also as an expression/symbolic work of the creator, in nature.The expression of craft arts is highly bound by its elaborate materials, technical or process. The realization requires for technical sckill, persevere and patience, and also it can be done in short way, while it can be arranged/ordered so that the expression exposures can be touchable for them who observe them.The craft design can also be understood as the design approach both in methodology, principal and objective of design, both in relation with the practical functional, aesthetics and also symbolic aspects.One of the characteristic of the craft arts is its concrete outcome of the ability or skill from the creator (craftmanship) on the form or shape of their works in high quality, both in uniqueness, aesthetics, philosophy, symbolic and also practical function aspects viewpoints. The craftman can use any simple equipment, even with relatively modern technology in hands to realize them, but the control still on their own bare hands.Keyword : expression,symbolic,craft, design

Abstract

Craftmanship art as human cultural creation results in material  form reflects the level of civilization in their ages. Functional value as daily activity support becomes the main special characteristic. Visual­ization of the art tends to aesthetic, expressive and symbolic expres­sion of the creator's soul as the influence of refine arts transformation in general.  Craftmanship is closely related with materials, technique and  processes in which stressing high patience, precise and thorough at­titudes because handcraft, besides conceived as an art closely related with handcraft as one of its special characteristic, it is also the concrete result of an ability between the skills of the creator (craftmanship) and the instruments as the revealer of the creativity idea.  Craftmanship has been reaching on classical level such noble  creation as puppets, batik, and carved objects which are necessarily to be preserved and developed for the next generation for not to be extinct, ate by the fast of modernization dynamics.

Abstract

Expression is a process or result of someone’s or a group of people’s activity in expressing desires, in reacting on the existing reality or wants by using a medium.Basically expresison is a symbol of communication with other people as a sym­bol has meaning and values. In addition to this, expression contains something thought, felt, hope or dreamt of by the artist as thecreator.From the aest hetic point of view, expression is closely related to art whether It is dance, teat hre, music, painting, craft, graphic art and so on. Expression, besides it can be viewed from the visual aspect, is deeper when viewed from the background of sit so that we can see the spirit of the expres­sion.Keyword: Exspression

Abstract

The paper entitled “The interpretation of seat facility’s form and function in Karmawibhangga Relief of Borobudur Temple” was the result of the 1st stage of Competitive Grant Research entitled “The Development of Javanese Furniture Form as the Attempt of Solidifying and Preserving Local Culture in Surakarta”. The problem raised was what are form and function of seat facilities in Karmawibhangga Relief of Borobudur Temple including: (1) the form seems visually to be: bantalan (pad), amben kaki empat (four-leg bed), amben kaki enam (six-leg bed), amben kaki delapan (eight-bed bed), chair, and recess or throne. (2) The size of seat can be seen based on the strips forming a wide high plane, the form manifested intended to sitting in group or individually, social status, and material. (3) The furniture material can be seen based on size thickness and working technique indicating the presence of wood and stone material. (4) The technique used to finish the seat and to create profile indicated the presence of chiseling and lathing techniques. The seating had physical, personal, and social functions. The physical function of seat was manifested into form according to activity. The personal function of seat was manifested into the consideration of what for it is produced (intention of production) based on the difference of social status as could be seen in the different forms and size. The social function of seat was manifested into various complicated (ngrawit) forms, sizes, ornaments, and profile; the form was manifested proportionally between ornament, size, and technique indicating the presence of intellectuality in high art taste proving the presence of civilization.
