Abstract

This research aims to increase student’s reading ability in English through question card media. The research was conducted for the XI grades at MA Kanjeng Sepuh Sidayu Gresik. The focus was describing the TGT model's implementation to increase the English reading ability in explanation text material. This research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. It was conducted in two cycles, in which each process consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This study was carried out in January-March 2020. The data were collected by holding the test, monitoring, documenting, and distributing the questionnaire. The research results that the use of the TGT model in reading ability has been able to improve student’s skills. The students enjoyed and got enthusiastic. Abstract

The aim of this research is What are the function and references of the types of deixis found in Barack Obama’s speech text at a congress community Muslim American event in the mosques in Baltimore? The method used in this research is library research qualitative approach. The data source in this research is text of Barack Obama’s speech. The method of collecting data is using documentation. The data were analyses by using Levinson theory. The result of the research are is there are three types of deixis meanly, person deixis has function, place deixis and time deixis. The conclusion of this research in speech text of Barack Obama at a Congress Community Muslim American event in the Mosque in Baltimore some the person deixis has function plural singular and plural pronoun, it singular refers to Barack Obama (as speaker) plural refers to audience. The place deixis has function proximal and distal term, it proximal refers to Mosque in Baltimore where place speaker delivers speech, it distal refers to Community of American Muslims in Africa The time deixis has function proximal and distal term, it proximal refers to Thursday, the day when speaker congress event, it distal refers to the past condition when a act of terrorism. Abstract

Pada zaman sekarang ini, digitalisasi menjadi sangat dekat dengan kehidupan kita. Segala hal dapat diketahui melalui gedget. Mirisnya sekarang kita akan mendapati orang-orang sibuk dengan gadget masing-masing, diruang publik seperti dikantor, toko, mall, cafe, rumah ibadah, warung kopi, bahkan di sekolah yang notabene sebagai tempat belajar, para siswa bahkan guru-guru pun lebih suka dan tidak bosan-bosannya melototi gadget mereka masing-masing daripada membaca. Mereka lebih senang bermain media sosial, seperti Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, Whatssap dan lain-lain ketimbang membaca tentang berita atau artikel-artikel online yang memberikan informasi penting. Sehingga nasib perpustakaan-perpustakaan sangat menyedihkan sekali, budaya stalking membuat perpusttakaan sekolah bukan menjadi tempat favorit untuk dikunjung lagi karena sudah menjadi kuburan sekolah. Apalagi perpustkaan yang minim fasilitas seperti yang terjadi di perpustakaan sekolah di SDN dan MI Tiwet. Hal itu tentunya menambah alasan mengapa siswa-siswa tidak mau mengunjungi perpustakaan. Melihat kondisi tersebut, penulis melaksanakan pengabdian berupa penyuluhan terhadap guru-guru untuk menghidupkan kembali perpustakaan sekolah mereka.

Abstract

The female characters struggle in The American Heiress is very interesting to be analyzed because the story tells about the sacrifice love which containing of contestation desired multicultural identities. This study is aimed to analyze the struggles of female characters to get symbolic capital which focus on Cora Cash and Charlotte symbolic struggle to be the new Duchess. To support this study, the practice of theory by Pierre Bourdieu is used as a concept of the symbolic struggle which involved to the contestation each character. This study applies qualitative research study. The result of this study is Cora Cash and Charlotte are done the struggle, they have different amount of the capital which Cora is more accomplish all of the capitals than Charlotte. It can be seen by the movement of Cora’s position is different before and after she goes to England. Her first coming to England she is the new comer, she tries to show her strategy until she gets the symbolic capital as the wife of the Duke.

Abstract

This research is about the resistance of life characters from political exiles and student activists in 1998 contained in the novels Pulang and Laut Bercerita by Chudori (2012, 2017). The focus of this study is the Foucault (2012) discourse analysis which focuses on resistance characters in fighting the New Order regime. This study aims to examine the patterns of resistance through discursive formations in archeological reading. The steps of analysis are; to mark it based on existing discourse, link the lines of text with the sequence, observed the rupture, interpretation of the meaning. The results of the study show that Chudori's novels have patterns of resistance that cannot be separated from the New Order regime that once ruled Indonesia. This is based on the discursive formation that occurs in the text that describes if the power of the New Order regime is very strong.

Abstract

Tujuan dalam pengabdian ini yakni pentingnya penanganan kerusakan lingkungan yang marak terjadi akhir-akhir ini. Salah satu caranya dengan membangun dan menguatkan kompetensi sikap peduli lingkungan yang dapat ditempuh melalui melalui sastra ekokritik dalam pembelajaran yakni penulisan kreatif fiksi. Dalam hal ini, penulisan kreatif dipandang sebagai sebuah media pembelajaran yang cukup efektif untuk dapat menyampaikan nilai-nilai tersebut. Oleh karena itu, pengembangan pembelajaran penulisan kreatif berwawasan lingkungan dalam bidang mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris perlu untuk dilaksanakan pengabdian di Desa Deket Kulon Lamongan. Tujuan dari pengabdian ini selain untuk menambah kemampuan dalam penulisan kreatif fiksi juga sebagai usaha untuk penanganan lingkungan kerusakan lingkungan. Metode yang dilakukan dalam pengabdian ini yakni melalui pemberian materi dan pelatihan mengaplikasikan sastra ekokritik dalam bentuk penulisan kreatif fiksi serta mempublikasikannya pada media sosial. Pelatihan menulis ini juga diwujudkan dalam games berfokus sastra dan lingkungan, serta kritik terhadap kondisi lingkungan, sangat diperlukan untuk mengasah kekritisan dan kreativitas para siswa dalam dunia literasi.

Abstract

The lack of vocabulary mastery often becomes an obstacle in writing, whereas vocabulary determines how skilled a person is in language. It is also supported by qualified grammatical skills so that the writing is directed and by existing rules, producing readable and coherent writing content. This study aims to describe pupils' essay writing skills and the link between grammar competence and vocabulary mastery. The study is ex post facto. The sample in this study is 104. The research data were obtained through three instruments: an essay text, a grammar mastery test, and a vocabulary mastery test. The data analysis technique used is product-moment correlation and multiple regression. Mastery of vocabulary and grammar together has a considerable impact on English Education students' essay writing skills; grammar competence considerably impacts English Education students' essay writing abilities; and vocabulary knowledge substantially impacts English Education students' essay writing abilities. It implies that mastery of vocabulary and grammar significantly impacts students' essay-writing abilities at Universitas Islam Lamongan.

Abstract

This research was conducted on Tenth Grade students at a vocational high school in Lamongan, this study aims to describe, explain the form of code mixing and code switching that occurs in learning, find out the factors and reasons teachers use code mixing and code switching in learning English in Tenth Grade . The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative using a sociolinguistic approach. Data collection techniques research results in the form of data collection obtained by means of observation and open interviews at the time of the study. The results showed that code-switching and code-mixing in learning English in one of the vocational high schools in Lamongan City found a form of code mixing and code switching that occurred in learning in Tenth Grade , in total only two types of code mixing were found. The factors causing code-switching include: the speech of the interlocutor, the third presence, the subject (topic), to evoke a sense of humor. Factors causing code mixing include: wanting to explain something, because of the situation, wanting to establish intimacy between teachers and students. The impacts of code switching and code mixing include: positive impacts, namely students are easier to understand the subject matter presented by the teacher, negative impacts of the Indonesian language order resulting from interference and integration, as well as code switching and code mixing. the use of Indonesian is not done properly and correctly so that in learning the situation becomes informal. This research is expected to provide knowledge and become a reference for further research with different references.Key Words: Sociolinguistic, Code Mixing, Code Switching

Abstract

Second language acquisition (SLA) has been an important topic of research within the field of English Language Teaching (ELT), with numerous teaching methods and approaches being examined to better language learning. One of the most prominent figure is Stephen Krasen. Krasen develop monitor theory by five hypotheses that relate to a framework for teaching a providing second second language namely: the acquisition and learning hypothesis, the natural sequence hypothesis, the simple present tense structure will be acquired and mastered first by learners than the simple past tense structure, the Monitor Hypothesis, the input hypothesis, the affective filter hypothesis. Through the monitor exists in learning is a tool to "monitor" ones outputs, to edit and make changes or corrections as they are consciously.
