Abstract

Abstract This study examined the health benefits of exercise on lifestyle of Civil servants of Ilorin East Local Government Area. The objective of this study were to find out if cardiovascular health, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility as a result of exercise will influence positive lifestyle among Civil servants in the Area. Descriptive research design of survey method was adopted. The population for this study comprised all Civil servants in the area . Systematic sampling technique was used to select 10% of the population. A researcher designed structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondent. A reliability coefficient of 0.65 was obtained through Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Four null hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics of Chi-square at 0.05 alpha level. The result revealed that Cardiovascular health, Muscular endurance, Body composition, Flexibility as a result of exercise significantly influenced lifestyle among civil servants in Ilorin East Local Government positively. It was concluded that health benefits of exercise on lifestyle among Civil servants in Ilorin East. Local Government were significantly influenced by cardiovascular health, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility as a result of exercise. Therefore, it was recommended that Civil servants should be encouraged to participate in exercise to improve their cardiovascular health.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of physical activity level on the quality of life among academic staff of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. Expo-facto research design was used in the study. All staff of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo formed the population. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 39 respondents for the study. The adapted International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the adapted World Health Organization Health Related Quality of Life (WHO-HRQoL) Questionnaire were used to obtain information from the respondents. Data were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and independent sample t-test. The results of the findings showed that there is significant difference, t(37) = -3.638, p < .05, between the quality of life of physically inactive academic staff (M = 58.50 ± 2.51) and physically active academic staff (M = 77.03 ± 10.04) of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo and the t-test value t(37) = -4.112, p < .0001; was obtained for psychological wellbeing. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that physically active academic staff have better quality of life and psychological health than the physically inactive academic staff of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. It was recommended that there should be adequate sensitization of the staff about the importance of engaging in physical activities during conferences, seminar, health talk and so on . by the physical and health educators and the school management should organize periodic health enhancing physical activity programmes for the staff like fitness walk or jogging once in a month.

Abstract

The study specifically investigated cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition of male and female non-athletes in Nigeria concerning their physical fitness status. A descriptive research design of survey type was used. The population comprised all 100 non-athletes. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used. We structured a questionnaire validated by three experts. A reliability coefficient of 0.70 was obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Data collection was conducted by the researcher, and two trained research assistants. The four hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics of Chi-square at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of this study showed a significant influence of cardiorespiratory endurance as well as physical fitness of male and female non-athletes. Also, there was a significant influence on muscular strength and physical fitness, flexibility and physical fitness status, as well as body composition and physical fitness status of male and female non-athletes. Non-athlete students should engage in physical activities to promote cardiorespiratory endurance during any exercise. Non-athlete students should engage in regular training with weights or using the weight of the body for resistance during calisthenics exercises to promote muscular strength in them.

Abstract

The manifestation of chronic cardiovascular diseases is increasing every day, especially among adults. This could result from an unhealthy lifestyle and some underlying health conditions associated with increased body fat. Therefore, the study was conducted to ascertain the effect of exercise on the body composition of adults in Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry, Ilorin. The experimental research design of one group pretest-posttest was adopted for the study. The study population consisted of all religious leaders from Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Ilorin. Twenty (20) participants were selected for this study through the Systematic Sampling Technique. Consent of the participants was sorted, and health screening of the participants was conducted. FITT principle was followed for a duration of 8-weeks of exercise intervention. Standardized instruments (bioelectrical impedance analysis, non-elastic tape-rule, portable height-scale) were used to collect body composition parameters (% body fat, WHR, BMI). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages to describe their body composition.In contrast, inferential statistics of paired t-test was used to analyze the hypotheses formulated, adopting a p-value of 0.05 for statistical significance. The statistical package for social science (SPSS) software was used for data analysis. The findings revealed that a significant effect of exercise exists on the body mass index of adults in Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry, Ilorin. This study, therefore, concluded that there is a strong interaction between the body composition of adults and their physical activity level. It was recommended that there should be a frequent orientation on the need to participate in regular exercise to the general public.
