Abstract

This study aims to determine student perceptions of the ideal mathematics learning during the covid-19 pandemic. This research is a qualitative descriptive study which was carried out using observation, questionnaire and interview techniques to 36 students of mathematics education class 2020 Gorontalo State University  who had participated in online learning for 2 semesters. The results showed that mathematics learning carried out during the covid-19 pandemic was still not ideal with a percentage of 91.6% due to the nature of difficult and abstract mathematics material and there were several repeated obstacles that occurred in the online learning process, namely: 1) teachers were less proficient in use of online platforms; 2) teaching is carried out using only sound (audio); 3) the internet network is less stable so that students cannot participate in online learning. The recommendations for the ideal mathematics learning are: 1) in the online learning process the teacher must be able to master (proficiently) use the online platform used; 2) teachers must be able to design innovative and fun learning by utilizing the features available on the platform or utilizing objects that are around students; 3) teachers can provide learning resources that can be accessed at any time so as to facilitate students in order not to miss the subject matter.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze student learning difficulties in advanced calculus courses. This research is a qualitative descriptive study which was conducted in December 2021using test, observation, questionnaire and interview techniques to 27 students of mathematics education class 2020 Gorontalo State University. The results showed that the number of students who obtained UTS score less than 75 reached 77.78% and the number of students who obtained an UAS score less than 75 reached 66.66% and the percentage of students who did not pass the UTS and UAS was around 30%. This fact shows that there are students' difficulties in understanding advanced calculus material. Furthermore, based on the results of questionnaires, interviews, and observations obtained several aspects that cause learning difficulties, namely 1) the initial ability (prior knowledge) related to students' advanced calculus courses is low; 2) advanced calculus material which is abstract and difficult; 3) online learning methods have not taken place optimally Keyword: Analysis, mathematics learning difficulties Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesulitan belajar mahasiswa pada mata kuliah kalkulus lanjut.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the student's error in the completion of real analysis using Newman Error Analysis (NEA). The type of research is qualitative descriptive. Which research subjects were 22 students of the mathematics education study program of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo at VI semesters in the 2020/2021 academic year. Data-collection techniques using written tests and interviews. Data is analyzed with reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusion. The result of the study found 4 errors made by students in answering a problem based on NEA: (1) reading, (2) comprehension, (3) transformation, (4) and process skills. This identification can be used by lecturers teaching real analysis to consider supporting the courses and designing learning systems to minimize student errors in solving problems.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe, identify and analyze students' spatial intelligence in working on geometry problems according to Van Hiele's theory. The method used in this research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan. The research instrument used was the Van Hiele geometric thinking level test and spatial ability test, interview guides and documentation. Prior to use, the test, an interview guide, was first validated. The data analysis technique will be used in 4 stages, namely collecting, reducing, presenting, and concluding all the data obtained. The results of this study are that students with high spatial intelligence (KST) are at the level of informal deductive thinking (level 3) where at this ability students are able to know the relationship between shapes. While students with moderate spatial intelligence (SCC) are at the level of analytical thinking (level 2), namely the ability to know and mention the properties of flat shapes. Students with low spatial intelligence (KSR) are at the level of visualization thinking (level 1). In conclusion, it is important for teachers to know students' abilities in learning geometry by paying attention to the level of geometric thinking, being able to use the Van Hiele Geometry learning model, increasing spatial intelligence and van Hiele levels can be done through training involving geometric media or software (geogebra). Keywords: spatial intelligence, geometry, level of thinking, Van Hiele

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe how digital natives as preservice mathematics teachers learn mathematics. The research subjects were 30 students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at the Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques are semistructured interview, questionnaire using Mentimeter, and documentation. Data collecting held in 2022. First, they were interviewed to obtain information on how they studied college mathematics courses such as calculus or differential equations. After obtaining the methods they used, they were then asked to fill out a questionnaire via Mentimeter. From the results of the interviews and filling out the questionare, it was found that their ways of learning were by watching YouTube, reading books, discussing mathematics material with their peers, searching for learning material from the internet, and also using mathematical applications to help them solving problems. Although everyone has different preferences for which method they like the most, in general, they combine all five learning styles. When they were asked to choose the method they liked the most, 50% of them choose watching YouTube; 43% prefer to learn from books; and 6.67% choose to use mathematical application. The mathematical applications they use are dominated by Photomath. Other applications used are Qanda, Brainly, Colearn, Mathway, MathLab, Mathenchanter, Geogebra, Snap Quiz, and Wolfram Alpha. The results show that book is still relevan to use in this digital age.
