Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are not only criteria of making test items for students, they also have to be implemented in daily basis especially in the teaching and learning process. Students can use the skills when they are familiar with them. In order to make the students familiar with the use of HOTS in the classroom, the researcher assimilates critical discourse analysis (CDA) and debating technique to foster the students’ ability in using their HOT skills. The use of the skills is seen from the activities of analyzing, evaluating, and creating that are done through the implementation of CDA and debate technique. Technology is also used here since the students have to enrich their knowledge on the motion debated by searching some relevant issues online. The sample of the research is 32 students of the fourth semester who are studying speaking skill in the English Education Study Program of Pakuan University. The research shows that the assimilation of CDA and debate technique can make the students familiar with the use of higher order thinking skills which are analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This paper suggests that teachers should use the assimilation to foster students’ use of HOTS.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most important skills that have to be mastered in the art of language learning. In the university level, EFL students have essay writing subject that requires them to write many types of essay, among those being the argumentative essay. In writing an essay, they need to be able to develop their own original ideas, despite the fact that some of them still consider this a difficult task. This research is aimed to highlight set of difficulties encountered by students that are assigned to develop ideas whilst writing argumentative essay. This research was conducted at Pakuan University and involved 23 students as participant of this study. Qualitative method and descriptive analysis are applied in conducting this research. To gain the research data, three research instruments were used, they are: documentation, questionnaire and interview. Documentation instrument was used to analyze students’ work of argumentative essay. The questionnaire was administered to all participants and the interview was conducted once for each student. This study reveals that the students still have some difficulties in constructing thesis statement, organizing paragraph, making writing coherent and combining ideas in correct sentences. Finally, the result of this research may urge the students to improve their writing skills and provide the teachers to explore more on teaching writing practices.

Abstract

This research is an endeavor to portrait an effort to empower learners’ autonomy through peer assessment activity by using Moodle-based workshop. The method employed in this study was descriptive case study. 30 students taken from one class were involved in this study as the participants. The data of the research was gathered through administering questionnaire and conducting focused group discussion. Abstract

The use of technology in teaching has increased significantly and the conventional classroom now can be replaced by providing online teaching-learning.  Most of the platforms of online learning focus only on giving assignments and works instead of giving teaching material.  Thus, in the teaching and learning process, the students' autonomous learning are not built. In this study, flipped classrooms were the model of online learning used replacing the role of students and teachers in the teaching and learning process and to see how it affected the learners' autonomy. The flipped classroom approach stated to be a shift of the responsibility from teacher to students, thus the students were not passive participants in the classroom and they were given the opportunity to develop their own autonomy in learning. This study aimed to describe the potential and pitfalls of applying flipped classroom as a teaching model in the teaching and learning process. The researchers employed a qualitative research design and the data was collected through an interview and Learner Autonomy Questionnaire. The system logs used in flipped classrooms was also taken as a triangulation data.

Abstract

English Phonology is one of the subjects that is considered difficult to learn. Students assume that it is difficult since they have to memorize theories related to English pronunciation. To solve this problem, a team of lecturers agreed to apply a learning model called “DRIM” (dictating, reading, identifying, and modeling). The research was conducted within four cycles through Lesson Study program. The learning model consists of: 1) dictating, students listen to and write the sentences recited by the lecturer; 2) Reading, the students are given a text containing words with diphthongs. Those steps are done before the lecturer explains the material on diphthongs to diagnose students’ ability to recognize diphthongs; 3) Identifying, the students are asked to identify the given text and find words containing diphthongs After the students have understood the diphthongs and known how to pronounce them, the last step is 4) modeling. In modeling step, the students are asked to recite some words containing diphthongs and have other students repeat. By applying the model, the advantages that can be taken are as follows: a) giving more exercises and more various activities, b) improving listening skill, and c) growing students’ self- confidence to give examples to their other classmates.

Abstract

Teaching speaking is one of the important parts of foreign language learning. The ability to communicate in a second language is a key to the success of the learner to master English language and to his success in their real life. The fact that cannot be denied is that sometimes students feel reluctant to speak because of shyness and fear of making a mistake. Three-step Interview technique is one of the techniques from cooperative learning that has many positive effects. This research is conducted to find out the effect of using Three-Step Interview technique on students’ speaking ability. It is conducted online at Pakuan University. In this research, a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test is used. There are 30 students in the first semester as samples. The data are taken from pre-test and post-test. Some steps are done to analyse the data and the design of the t-test formula is applied to get the final result. Based on the data calculation, it shows the t-test value is 19.7. The results of t-test and t-table with d.f = 29 at significant level 0.05 is 2.04. It shows that t-test value is higher than t-table (19.7 greater than 2.04). It means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, there is an effect of using a three-step interview technique on students’ speaking ability.
