Abstract

Abstract. Blended learning is a learning model that lecturers can apply to optimize the learning outcomes. This study, entitled "The Effectiveness of Blended Learning to Increase Student Motivation" aims to determine the extent of the effectiveness of Blended Learning in increasing the learning motivation on the first semester students of the English Literature Study Program at Khairun University. This research was carried out at the English Literature Study Program a quasi-experimental study designed on using the non-equivalent control group design. A total of 50 on the first semester students were sampled in this study. The sample was divided into 2 classes, experimental class used blended learning and the control class used face-to-face learning, each consisted of 25 students. The learning motivation questionnaire was used as the instrument in collecting the data related to students learning motivation. The results showed that there were significant differences between students learning motivation in the experimental class and students in the control class after had been given different treatments. The researcher also found that the application of Blended Learning was effective in increasing the learning motivation of the first semester students of English Literature Study Program at Khairun University.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini merupakan salah satu bagian dari Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang harus dilaksanakan oleh civitas akademika, khususnya para Dosen Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Khairun. Dalam pengabdian ini selain melibatkan Dosen Universitas Khairun, juga melibatkan mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris dan Himpunan Pelajar Mamuya IPMM. Adapun kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam pengabdian ini adalah Dialog Budaya dan diskusi sastra lisan, Pengenalan Program Studi Sastra Inggris dan Pentas Seni oleh Tim Unkhair dan Masyarakat Mamuya. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah membekali para mahasiswa sastra Inggris dalam berkegiatan sosial di masyarakat, disertai dengan keterampilan bahasa Inggris secara aktif dan komunikatif baik lisan maupun tulisan.  Hasil kegiatan yang dilakukan ini memberikan dampak positif bagi masyarakat di desa Mamuya dan civitas akademika Universitas Khairun, terbukti dengan bentuk antusias para pemuda-pemudi desa turut aktif berperan sejak hari kedatangan sampai dengan berakhirnya kegiatan, serta pihak desa meminta kepada tim Unkhair untuk memprogramkan kegiatan lanjutan, khususnya sastra lisan sebagai warisan budaya desa Mamuya, hal ini  sesuai dengan tujuan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat yakni bermanfaat bagi masyarakat. \ Kata Kunci : Budaya, Intelektual, Masyarakat, Pengabdian. Sastra Lisan.      ABSTRACT                Community Service is one part of Tridharma of the college required by academician, especially for the lecturers of the Cultural and Science Faculty, Khairun University. In this community service, besides involving  lecturers, it also involves students of  English Literature Study Program and the IPMM Mamuya Student Association. The activities carried out in this service are Cultural Dialogue and oral literature discussions, Introduction to the English Literature Study Program and Art Performances by the Unkhair Team and Society. The purpose of this activity is to equip English literature students of social activities in the community, be active and communicative in  English, both oral and written. The results of these activities had a positive impact to the community in Mamuya and the academic community of Khairun University, as evidenced by the enthusiastic of the activist taking an active role from the day of arrival until the end of the activity, as well as the host team asked  to follow-up program activities, especially oral literature as a cultural heritage of Mamuya, this is in accordance with the purpose of Community Service which is to give benefit to the community. Keywords : Culture, Intellectual, Society, Community Service. Abstract

Socialization of the prevention of the Corona virus through videos in the New Normal era aims (1) to provide the information to the public and knowledge about preventing the spread of the Coronavirus, starting from wearing a mask, washing hands, social distance, safe from Coronavirus transmission, maintaining immunity and (2)to provide an education to the society in preventing the spread of the Coronavirus in the New Normal era. In producing the video itself, it was carried out several stages, including; making a timeline for socialization activities and a video script. The next step is taking videos such as; Taking Videos of some students who will do the socialization, taking videos to appeal the prevention of COVID-19 in the New Normal era by the Head of English Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. The next is video editing, which will be merging and editing the videos that have been taken. The last is publishing through several social media, including Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, and on DVD for internal production of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences Khairun University.

Abstract

The community service activities by Unkhair team in the form of English language skills training in Ternate communities aims to increase the enthusiasm of community members to learn English and improve English skills through effective, creative and fun learning, in this case through media games. The method used prioritizes courage in speaking without worrying about being wrong in pronunciation or expression in using English. The sample are around 40 participants by the community members in Ternate. Games are used as English communication media between mentor and participants. Finally, the result of this activity is the increase of English ability of the participants in using games, therefore the learning process is more effectice, creative, and fun.

Abstract

Convensional Learning Model, such as lecturing method which makes teacher as the learning center without notice to the activeness and participation of students in the classroom still becomes teachers’ favourite style in teaching reading comprehension. Consequently, the learning process tends to be monotonous. This factor can answer the reason why the students’ achievement in reading skill at SMA 2 Ternate is not optimal. Then, this is suspected to be a factor in the occurrence of these problems. Therefore, the researcher applied TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) and combine it with authentic material in reading comprehension. This research is a quasi-experimental research with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest group design. The total population of this study were students of XI SMA Negeri 2 Ternate, who were class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. One of the XI classes was used as the experimental class and another one became the control class, then it analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. The selection of the class was based on the observation to see the similarity of students' abilities in these classes. The result showed that the TBLT method combined with the authentic material in the Reading Comprehension could increase: (1) the learning motivation of XI SMA 2 Ternate students; (2) increasing the student learning outcomes. It can be seen from the results of the Paired Sample t-test table that the significance = 0.000 is less than the significant level (α) = 0.05, then H0 is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there has been an increasing of learning outcomes in the experimental class from pre-test to post-test. Based on the result, the TBLT method can be recommended as a method used to increase English learning motivation.

Abstract

This research discuss about the Hybridity in the novel “The Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri viewed from Postcolonial Theory. The research focused on the hybridity culture in the novel and the impact of hybridity culture that reflected to the character in the novel. The method of this research used descriptive analysis method to describe problems in the forms of narration and analysis. This research used postcolonial theory of Hommi Bhaba hybridity to help on understanding the hybridity, or mix of two or more culture in the primary data, then to match with the real condition in India from the library research and internet search about the important events that related to postcolonialism theory about the postcolonial era that effected into the Indian culture in the novel then caused a hybridity culture. The result of this research is, the researcher finds the forms of hybridity which is reflected through the character in the novel. The forms of hybridity in the mix of British and Indian culture are hybridity culture, hybridity language, and hybridity in race and between three forms of hybridity the researcher found the dominant one is hybridity culture. The researcher also found the impact of hybridity culture that created the blurred copy of first and second culture, and then, make the domination position of one another and inferior culture Alienation and discriminate on the “third space”.

Abstract

Ternate is one of the cities in North Maluku, located right beneath Gamalama Mountain. Ternate was once a trade center in the 13th century and became a melting pot for people from different countries with different purposes. There were Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish with the aim of colonizing, and there were Arabian, Chinese, and locals outside Ternate, such as people from Halmahera, Sulawesi, Maluku, Sumatra, and Java, who came for trading. The arrival of these people contributes not only to language adaptation but also to place names known as toponymy. There are several relevant studies concerning toponymy in Indonesia, but they have yet to be done in Ternate. Hence, this research aims to: 1) analyze the morphological process of the villages naming in Ternate and 2) provide toponyms classification of the villages naming in Ternate. The primary data are taken from Ternate Dalam Angka, a statistical data from BPS Ternate, which contains 59 villages/sub-districts named in Ternate. The data was then analyzed and triangulated through in-depth interviews and literature studies. The data are presented both formally and informally. The analysis results show morphological processes concerning zero derivation, reduplication, compounding, abbreviation, back-formation, combination, borrowing, and phrases that occurred in the villages named in Ternate. The findings also attest to a theory proposed by George R. Stewart (2012) regarding toponymy classification of village naming in Ternate, in which there are descriptive, incident, possessive, commemorative, euphemistic, folk etymologies, manufactured, shift, mistake, descriptive + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, and unknown.

Abstract

Perkembangan industri pariwisata Indonesia menjadikan kegiatan kepariwisataan tidak hanya melayani kebutuhan tersier dengan dampak baru bagi pemangku kepentingan pariwisata, tetapi juga berdasarkan kepentingan lain seperti pendidikan, agama, industry dan manfaat lainnya. Desa Ake bay sebagai salah satu desa wisata di pulau Maitara yang memiliki beberapa potensi objek wisata bahari, wisata alam, wisata religi, dan juga wisata budaya. Potensi ini sudah dikelola dan dalam proses pengembangan. Dalam pengembangannya, desa ini membutuhkan peran promosi wisata untuk dapat dikenal oleh wisatawan lokal maupun wisatawan asing. Sehingga, perlu adanya kesadaran untuk mempromosikan wisata budaya lewat internet pada masyarakat di Pulau Maitara. Memanfaatkan fasilitas yang dimiliki dengan mengenalkan produk budaya adalah sebagai upaya agar masyarakat di Pulau Maitara dapat dikenal oleh masyarakat luas. Program kemitraan masyarakat oleh PkM Unkhair, dapat mensosialisasikan tentang pentingnya peran digitalisasi pariwisata oleh Desa Wisata melalui social media seperti Instagram, Facebook dan Tiktok, khususnya di Desa AkeBay.

Abstract

A pandemic or global epidemic is a disease transmitted simultaneously throughout the world. In 2019, the world faced a global outbreak of Covid-19. As a result, all lifelines have been paralyzed, starting from access to education, the economy, and health. However, there is a common thread from the event. One of them is the contribution of some vocabulary or foreign language terms. This paper aims to present some pandemic vocabulary and its equivalents through the collection of short stories “Cerita Saat Jeda” by Kaizen Writing Alumni Dee Lestari. The problem in this paper is formulated in the form of a question, “What is the English pandemic vocabulary narrated in the collection of short stories “Cerita Saat Jeda"? To answer these problems, the article uses the literary criticism approach of M.H. Abrams "the mirror and the lamp." According to Abrams, literature has three functions, namely, as a mirror, as a lamp, and as a medium. The research results show that the Covid-19 pandemic positively impacts society by producing new vocabulary or terms through literary works. The pandemic has become the new Indonesian language vocabulary in the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI).

Abstract

English is a foreign language in Indonesia. Learning English at the elementary school level means equalizing the country’s education quality. English as an international language should be a skill that every student should have. Foreign language learning methods usually used in schools are less effective, where the teacher's role is only to explain without any other actions that can attract students' interest and curiosity in learning. Therefore, teachers must be able to use methods or techniques that are appropriate and more interesting so that elementary school students, who incidentally are children, can enjoy the learning process more and process the content of the material properly. The service team will carry out work programs that can positively impact the teaching-learning environment, namely implementing English for Fun in learning English at the elementary school level. This activity aims to teach elementary school students the importance of learning English from an early age. Apart from that, to introduce them to what English is and how it is used, of course, in the right way. The socialization of learning English at the elementary school level is expected so that students can understand English early and play an active role in the learning process.
