Abstract

From August up to December 1978 a survey had been carried out on breast milk feeding in children of 0-2 years treated in the Departement of Child Health, Medical School, University of North Sumatera, Medon. The method applied was by filling questionnaires.The results were as follows: from 65 children ill vestigated, 28 (43.1%) drank breast milk, 14 (21,5%) breast milk + artificial milk, 20 (30.8%) artificial milk and 3 (4.6%) did not get any milk.The time of starting artificial milk as additional milk feeding was found highest (33.3%) at the age 3 -6 months. The older the child the less the percentage of breast milk.

Abstract

A survey was conducted on freshmen in the year 1975. They consisted of 971 students: 705 boys and 266 girls. The boy’s age ranged from18 to 23 years while the girl's age ranged from 18 to 22 years. The survey was done with the retrospective method by filiing questionnaires.We found that puberty started earlier among the girls than the boys and that menarche started at the age of 14.75 years, which was later than found in other countries.

Abstract

A 14-month-old girl was admitted with signs of paleness, weakness and swelling of the lymphnodes in the neck and inguinal. Histopatological examination of the lymphnodes showed histiocytosis X. X-photo of the skull and pelvic bones revealed several osteolysis.Based upon clinical manifestations and histopathological examination this diseases was diagnosed as the rare disease Hand-Schüller-Christian disease.

Abstract

From October 15 until December 15, 1978, 13 children with acute enteritisadmitted to the Pediatric ward, Pirngadi Hospital Medan and treated with i. v.half strength Ringer's lactate in Dextrose 2.5% had been evaluated for hypopotassemia. Criteria used were a serum potassium level of less than 4 mEq /L and the typical ECG pattern.Out of the 13 patients, 10 (79,6%) developed hypopotassemia during i. v.therapy. It is concluded that in cases of Pediatric gastroenteritis treated with half strength Ringer's lactate in Dextrose 2,.% the possibility of hypopotassemia should be seriously borne in mind.

Abstract

At the Department of Child Health Medical School University of NorthSumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan, a retrospective study for analysis onRabies in Children from 1977 - 1980 had been carried out. We found 29cases consisting of 23 males arul 6 females. The highest incidence was between 6 - 12 years. All was bitten by dogs.Lower limbs were the most common site of dog bite. Twenty of the 29cases were derived from Medan Munic~TJ!e. All of the cases did not receivedpost"exposure immunization. People's alertness to dog control is still unproperly practice and stray dogs are everywhere.
