Abstract

As for most Indonesian learners of English, classroom is the only place to learn and to practice English either with classmates or teachers. However, they do not to have plenty of opportunities to practice in English when they leave the classrooms. This has encouraged many of the learners seek strategies that allow them to learn and to use English outside the walls of the classrooms. This paper aims to introduce an approach which can be used as an English learning strategy for EFL learners that they can learn and practice English outside the classroom. This approach is hereinafter referred to as the Society-Based English Community (SOBAT). Therefore, the discussion of this paper focuses on three main points. First, it presents a theoretical discussion on the SOBAT concept. Second, it introduces procedures that can be used by EFL learners to establish SOBAT. Third, it outlines several proposed activities that can be carried out in this community. Forming this community is believed to be able to provide four main benefits: providing the EFL learners with plenty of opportunities not only to learn but also to practice English collectively, forming a habit of using English as intensive as possible for the sake of establishing a community of English whose members actively communicate in English and use English the first lingua franca, giving the members a chance to become interactive, creative, active and effective EFL learners, developing their assertiveness, critical thinking, leadership, initiative as well as inclusiveness by taking a part in discussions and debates on important issues of this country.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the improvement of the student’s reading comprehension after the researcher applies Experience-Text-Relationship (ETR) Method at the tenth grade office administration students of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang. The research design in this research was pre-experimental method with one group pre-test, treatment and post-test. The population in this research was the tenth grade students’ office administration students of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang consist of 105 students. The sample of this research was Class X Ap2 consist of 35 students. The researcher used purposive sampling because the teacher of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang recommended this class. The researcher applies 30 items of multiple choice test. The result of this research indicated the students’ mean score in pre-test is 34.54 and mean score in post-test is 87.08. It can be concluded that the rate percentage in post-test was higher than the rate percentage in pre-test in teaching reading. This showed that Experience-Text-Relationship (ETR) method can improved students’ reading comprehension. Based on the result finding, the t-test was greater than the value of t-table (5.12 ≥ 2.021). This showed that Experience-Text-relationship (ETR) Method can improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

One of grammatical pattern of English that is important to be taught is imperative sentences. By having the knowledge about imperative sentences, students are supposed to be able to construct the sentences correctly. Although the students have learnt imperative sentences at school, most of them still find difficulties in understanding and using them. This study aimed at finding out whether using of traffic sign pictures able to improve the students’ ability in constructing imperative sentence. This study was conducted at the seventh grade of SMPN 2 Tellu Limpoe kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang by using pre-experimental method with one group on pre-test and post-test design. This study was conducted in eight meeting which consist of one meeting for pre-test, six meeting for treatment, and one meeting for post-test. The data were gathered through quantitative data. The study found out the use of traffic sign pictures was able to improve the students’ ability in constructing imperative sentence. This study also provides a set of recommendation to avoid the overlapped researches in English education.

Abstract

This research was aimed to see the improvement of vocabulary mastery students after learning process by using observe and remember game at the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Cempa Kabupaten Pinrang. The results of the research are useful for the teacher and students. In this research, the researcher used pre-experimental method. The population of this research was the eighth grade SMPN 2 Cempa. The sample was one class VIII.3 consisted of 21 students. The sampling technique in this research used classroom random sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used instrument in form vocabulary test consisted of matching and multiple choice questions in pre-test and post-test. The researcher collected the data through giving pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The researcher also gave questionnaire to know the responses of students to observe and remember game. Based on the calculation, the result showed that the mean score of pos-test (84,04) was higher than the mean score of pre-test (63,09) and obtained that α= 0,05 and (df) = N-1 = 21-1= 20, and the value of the t-table is 1,72472, while the value of t-test was 13,09. It means that the t-test value is greater than t-table (13,09≥1,72472). Thus it can be concluded that the vocabulary mastery students was better after getting the treatment. So, the null hypothesis(H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The second result of analyzed data that 84.23 of the students were interested in using observe and remember game, in other word most of them interested to apply observe and remember game. Based on the research result, it was concluded that observe and remember game was improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Cempa.

Abstract

Through observations made on students of SMPN 2 Pangale Kab, Mamuju Tengah, specially in class VIII it was found that students did not show motivation in learning English in school. Therefore, the researcher decided to use a Relay Race game to solve problems. Expected via a Relay Race Games are used, students motivation can be increased and improved see how the steps in the game can improve students motivation in learning English second year students of SMPN 2 Pangale Kab, Mamuju Tengah. The design of this study is a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design (nonequivalent control group) with to groups, namely the exprtmental group and the control group. The study population was second year students in SMPN 2 Pangale Kab, Mamuju Tengah consisting of two classes in which the total number was 40 student. The sample of this research was purposive sampling technique. Researchers tookone class, VIII which was divided into two groups, the first group was VIII (A) as an experimental group consisting of 20 students and the second group was VIII (B) because the control group consisted of 20. Data collected trought pretes and posttest. The the method Relay Race game can improve students English ability the apply the discussion method. The results of this study indicate how students speak significantly improve.
