Abstract

The purposes of this research are to define the students’ conceptual understanding and to find out their difficulty and opinion of Analytic Basic Chemistry-Problem Solving Based lecturing. Students opinion tell that the lecturer speaks fast in explaining the material (25,81%); the lecturer uses discussion-information method and gives exercise (87,16%); the lecturer uses practicum to verify the theory (87,10%); and the laboratory facility is quite satisfactory (80,65%). Based on the research it can be suggested to develop the lecture program to facilitate the problem solving ability to fix the conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is considered as a benchmark of high and low quality of science education in a country. This study aims to identify the scientific literacy of teachers and learning science relation to the issues from the perspective of a science teacher. This descriptive study involved 25 science teachers who are members of MGMP IPA in Bogor. The instrument used in this study consisted of scientific literacy tests and interviews. The results showed that 20% of teachers have scientific literacy ability in the low category, 65% in the moderate category and 15% in the high category. The problems of teaching science based on teacher perspective are 1. having difficulty to teach Integrated Science; 2. having limited knowledge related to learning models of Integrated Science; 3. lack of motivation in teaching integrated science consistently. The results of these studies form the basis that the professional trainings for junior high science teacher need to be conducted in a sustainable manner and related with the needs of their proficiency.

Abstract

One of the weaknesses of secondary science teachers today is the lack of ability to develop integrated science learning. Descriptive study, followed by developmental research has been done to determine the factors that caused the weakness, to find the right solution. In addition, the research that involving 25 teachers as subject, has also examined how far the treatment can be able to overcome the problems. The descriptive research shows that almost all of teachers did not have skillful on how to teach science in integrated way. This is because all of teacher's background is not from fully integrated science education. Most of them came from biology, physics and chemistry education. They have actually attended the training (arranged by government) on integrated science teaching, but it apparently have not succeeded. The eight steps of learning approach has been developed and implemented along the training: (1) Building common perception on science literacy, (2) integrated science analysis based on current curriculum and lesson analysis, (3) presentation, (4) designing lesson plan in groups, (5) simulation, (6) designing lesson plan individually, (7) evaluation-reflection, and (8) rewards. After the treatment, the teacher's ability to develop the lesson plans eventually improves much better as well as the understanding on integrated science concepts. Only three teachers have to follow remediation in making lesson plan because they still not fulfill requirement of graduation (minimum 80% achievement of conceptual understand, performance, and lesson plan product).

Abstract

This study aims to enhance critical thinking skill through science context-based inquiry learning (SCOIL). This study is a quasi-experimental research with pretest and posttest control group design. The SCOIL was carried out in seventh-grade junior high school in Bogor with 56 students consisted of 24 boys and 36 girls. Data were collected by giving out critical thinking skill tests, observing the teaching and learning process, and students’ activities. Those data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Syntax of SCOIL was namely observation, investigation, representation, conclusions, and communication. The result of the SCOIL model implementation showed increased activity with high category and N-gain critical thinking skill was categorized at the medium level. The significance test showed the critical thinking skills of students with the SCOIL model are greater than the guided inquiry learning model. It can be concluded that the SCOIL model can enhance the critical thinking skills of junior high school students.
