Abstract

The topic of this research is the depression experienced by the main character in the Jasmine Warga’s My Heart and Other Black Holes with the formulation problem on how the form of depression in the main character is and the efforts made by the main character to overcome the depression that she is going through. This research uses the descriptive analysis method with data analysis techniques in the form of a literature study using the perspective of literary psychology and a psychological review of depression and intrinsic elements such as character and characterization, plot, conflict, and settings. The results of this study are that the main character experiences a major depression with various physical, psychological, social symptoms, emotional and motivational symptoms, and some triggering factors that are psychological factors with several self-defense mechanisms and the main character's efforts in overcoming her depression.Keywords: Depression; Main Character; Self-defense Mechanism; Overcome Depression.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the process of derivational and inflectional affixes in the song lyrics on the Playlist Today’s Top Hits Spotify and to analyze the most dominant and productive types of derivational and inflectional affixes on the playlist. The result of this study shows 268 words consist of derivational and inflectional affixes. Derivational affixes contain 59 words, with the process: Verb to Noun, Adjective to Noun, Adjective to Adverb, Verb to Adjective, Noun to Adjective, Noun to Verb, Verb to Verb, Adjective to Adjective, and Noun to Noun. Inflectional affixes consist of 209 words, with the process: -s or –es plural, -ing (progressive), -s third singular person, -ed past tense, -er (comparative), -est (superlative), -en (past participle), and ‘s (possessive). The most dominant and productive types of derivational and inflectional affixes are derivational suffixes and inflectional suffixes. Comparing the affixation process derivationally and inflectionally, the inflectional affix process is the most productive in the process of affixation.Keywords: Derivational; inflectional; affix; song lyrics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the main character’s defense mechanisms when experiencing conflict in Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This research uses descriptive analysis method with a literary psychology approach that focuses on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory regarding defense mechanism. The research technique is library research. The research findings reveal that the main character performs defense mechanisms such as rationalization, sublimation, denial, identification, and repression when he encounters unwanted feelings.Keywords: main character; defense mechanism; psychoanalysis; literary psychology; anxiety.

Abstract

This study discusses the influence of terror on the main character's personality in four short stories by Stephen King. In Stephen King’s short stories Mr. Harrigan's Phone, The Life of Chuck, If it Bleeds and The Rat, terror occurs because of the unusual change in certain objects. People are mostly not accustomed to being aware of terror. Theoretically, terror has certainly been used to gain power and political achievement for centuries. The descriptive qualitative analysis method is applied in this research. The finding posits that people affected by terror usually have psychological reactions such as anxiety/fear and curiosity. Therefore, someone tries to fight it as a form of self-defense. If an individual is constantly exposed to terror, it can potentially change one’s personality.Keywords:influence; terror; personality; main character; reaction; anxiety; curiosity; self-defense.

Abstract

Byronic hero is a type of Romantic Hero that was popular in the Romantic period in the 19th century. The purpose of this research is to identify Loki as a Byronic Hero in Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee. This research uses qualitative analysis methods with a structuralism approach, which focused on intrinsic elements of the novel such as character and characterization, conflicts, and symbols. By applying Michael Riffaterre’s theory of semiotics, this research describes the character traits of Byronic Hero through heuristic and hermeneutic readings on Loki’s character describes the meaning of the symbols "godseye mirror" and "norn stones" on Loki's character, and  also matrices and hypograms in the novel. The results of the research prov that Loki is a Byronic Hero in Loki: Where Mischief Lies. Keywords: Byronic Hero; heuristic and hermeneutic readings; matrices; hypograms.

Abstract

The thesis entitled "The Central Character’s Social Background and Its Relation to Domestic Conflict in Kevin Kwan’s Rich People Problem " is the main topic of this research. The novel itself was published in 2017. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method by analyzing and describing the central character’s social background and how it is related to the cause of domestic conflicts through the use of intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The results showed that a person's social background affects their life and character which gave rise to domestic conflict, meaning that domestic conflicts can be caused by different social backgrounds even though they come from the same family lineage.  In this particular case, the domestic conflict that occurred because of such condition, was in the form of a fight over the family's main inheritance, namely Tyersall Park.Keywords: social background, central characters, habitus, wealth background

Abstract

This study is an analysis of the main character with the aim of showing how the main character responds and describes the problem of self-acceptance that affects her mental health.The analytical method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive analysis method along with the psychoanalytic theory proposed by Sigmund Freud with the study of developmental psychology. The results of the research  show that the level of self-acceptance can affect a person's life. The way the main character responds and describes self-acceptance is by looking back at her past life and embracing it in order to accept herself more as she is so she can move on and live a better life.Keywords: Midnight Library, mental health, self-acceptance and life.

Abstract

The research results are to develop the KineMaster application to create an interactive learning media for Pakuan State Elementary School teachers. Research design uses a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study have obtained the need for interesting and interactive learning media, students have difficulty consulting with teachers, especially for lessons that are considered to require deeper explanation and understanding. To overcome this, the use of learning media using the KineMaster application can be a very easy and effective alternative for teachers in carrying out learning. During the covid-19 pandemic, this application can be a solution for teachers in replacing teachers’ conventional classroom methods in the room. Kinemaster application presents a fairly simple look, but stores quite complex features. This condition can help students in understanding the learning materials. Creating learning media through animated videos using the KineMaster application is quite easy. Thus, Kinemaster applications can be used in developing materials and teaching materials for elementary teachers.
