Abstract

This research investigated “The Analysis of Gesture Used by Students of English Study Program in the Classroom Interaction at University of Sembilanbelas November, Kolaka”. The research problems were: what kinds of gesture that used by the students in the classroom interaction? And what are the functions of gesture which used by the students? With the objective of the research were to figure out several kinds of gesture that the students used in the classroom and to find out functions of gesture which used by the students. The method that used of this research was The Descriptive-Qualitative Method. The instruments that used in this research, those were observation and interview. The research participants in this research was the students of English Study Program and amounted to about 30 students, the lesson, as schedule in the fourth semester was Speaking Class, at the University of Sembilanbelas November, Kolaka. The results of this research concluded that, there were 29 kinds of the gesture which used by the students in the classroom interaction. And the functions of gesture were used by the students was also variously. But the functions of gesture were used by the students almost all of them were same. It was to show the sign of the tough-minded and stubborn individual, the interest of the student in the conversation, the student was lacking in self-confidence, courtesy and good attitude, showed disagreement, showed self-controlling, authority when argue, the persons’ habitual, the persons’ forgetfulness, the person’s shy nature, the person’s confident, showed self, the person enthusiasm when respond something, showed the courtesy, to disguise nervousness, to illustrate numbers, to clarify, gave comment, to express kept the confidence, to express the student felt nervous and insecure.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the differences between certified and non-certified English teachers in the teaching and learning process. The researcher formulated the objective of the research was to find out the differences between certified and non-certified English teachers in the teaching and learning process. Based on the objective of the research above, so the researcher came to analize the differences between certified and non-certified English teachers, they were one of certified English teacher in SMP Neg. 1 Kolaka and one of non-certified English teacher in SMK Negeri 1 Kolaka. The design of the research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative analysis. In conducting the research, the researcher used two kinds of data collection, they were interview and observation. In analysis of the data, the researcher used techniques of data analysis by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display and verifying and conclusion. In representing the analysis, the researcher mentioned the findings of certified and non-certified English teachers in the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, through out, the analysis, the researcher explained that certified and non-certified English teachers had some differences in the teaching and learning process. They showed differences in some indicators, they were material mastery, systematic presentation, methods application, using media, performance and motivation. Based on the finding and analysis, the researcher made conclusion that certified English teacher didn’t have all indicators in his teaching and learning process. Conversely, non-certified English teacher had all indicators in his teaching and learning process. In other words, non-certified English teacher had good quality than certified English teacher.

Abstract

This article was inspired by Jamil Pooniran's concept of STIFIn genetic intelligence and language learning methodology, especially regarding classroom management. All of these inspirations became the author's reference for pursuing his mind in building a genetic-based EFL classroom management concept. This article was not based on empirical data. Still, it was built and constructed from the previous concept, namely the STIFIn concept of genetic intelligence, which was synthesized into a genetic-based class management concept for the EFL class. This study aimed to determine how to apply the concept of genetic-based classroom management to the EFL class. Based on the STIFIn concept of genetic intelligence, the authors formulated a genetic-based classroom management concept for EFL classes adapted for EFL students' five types of machine intelligence. In summary, the author concluded that the genetic-based classroom management concept for the EFL class could be applied to the three managerial class phases, namely involving stage and using calibration at the evaluation stage.

Abstract

This study aims were to determine the context of teacher management and instructional talks in senior high schools, especially in Senior High Schools of 1 Bombana and the frequency of use of teachers' native language (NL) and target language (TL). The study subjects were two Indonesian English teachers. The descriptive qualitative method was used to obtain and analyze data. Our study results showed four contexts of utterance related to management talk while three contexts were related to the instructional talk. Teachers prefer to use the native language than the target language in either management talk term or instructional talk term. The frequency of using the native language was much higher both in management and instructional talk. It indicated by 86.9% average used in management talk, while 77.1% in the instructional talk. In addition, the reason for the domination of the native language was to reach the effectiveness of learning in EFL classes. However, it was also implied that the teacher's competence to use English in the classroom was inadequate.

Abstract

This community service program is aimed to improve the ability of Tangkeno youth in serving foreign visitor by using English. This is done due to the examine of the problems commonly faced by the Tangkeno in serving foreign visitor namely: (1) guiding services are still performed by external parties; (2) alternative tourist spots tend to be not visited by visitors who come without a guide, it is caused by the absence of a local guide who can direct visitors to that alternatives spot; and (3) although some residents have been delegated to learn English intensively in  Pare, East Java, but they have not been able to serve up to guests.This community service program includes four phases of activities, namely: ((1) preparation, preparation of curriculum and syllabus of learning English Tourism; (2) the determination of the participants; (3) the English tourism training; (4) practice/micro guiding English; and (5 ) writing report. Furthermore, the method used in the training and mentoring include: (1) participatory methods, (2) focus group discussions (FGD) (3) division of the working group (4) practice and training in the classroom, (5) Analysts need. Finally, the resulting output are as follow (1) a local guide in the village Tangkeno; (2) MoU Government of Bombana and Nineteen Universitas Sembilanbelas November Kolaka; and (3) Scientific Publications

Abstract

This research was based on the process of inquiry with which the researchers find the problem that needed to be formulated. The problem was the lack of adequate English teaching materials and methods for English learners in the Faculty of Law so that the learning objectives were not achieved maximally. This also led to a lack of interest and motivation to learn. The long-term goal of this research is to provide a significant solution in providing the right teaching materials and methods for English learners as a Foreign Language in the Faculty of Law in the form of syllabus design. In particular, this research aims to provide relevant teaching materials in order to improve the ability to speak English for Law Faculty students so that they can convey their scientific messages in communicating with the proper use of English. This research uses a Qualitative approach with Qualitative Verification method. The participants were six (6) persons selected purposively and consisted of two students of the Faculty of Law, a Law Faculty Lecturer, an employee or a high-ranking prosecutor, and two employees of Jail Kolaka. Data collection techniques used are in-depth interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentation so that this research instrument is an interview guide, observation sheet, closed questionnaires, and documents. All data were analyzed by using a Coding technique where data were analyzed systematically and objectively to identify characteristics of messages that are more specific so that can bring up a picture of theme sought by researchers. The results of data analysis show that there are some legal topics that can be used as an ideal teaching material for English learner of Faculty of Law such as Legal Issues, Good Governance, International Law, Remission, Case Law, Brach, Law Changing, Constitutional Law, and Career in Law. The proposed learning model is LiWReS (Listen to it, Write what you listen, Read it out loud, and Speak it out in repetition). There are seven (7) tips that can be considered by the faculty to improve motivation, determine the right motives, and increase the interest of English learners Faculty of Law, Universitas Sembilanbelas November Kolaka.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions related to the implementation of FDS (full day school) and Want to know also how to implement FDS in SMA 2 Kolaka. The population of this study were all students of grade 2 and 3, SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka consisting of 100 students. The sample of this study was 100 students, namely grade 2 and 3 students. There are two types of instruments in this study, Questioner and interview. Questioners divided into grade 2 and 3 students in the questionnaire. There are two first parts, positive perception 8 questions, two negative perceptions, 8 questions, so the total is 16 questions, after that the interview is done after all the questionnaires are given. All data obtained in this study were analyzed using the formula, the value for the answer yes is 1, and while the value for no is 0. Yes = 1x100 = 100%, No = 0x100% (no need to be counted), then the data from the results is added Interview. Based on the findings from this study it can be concluded that most students agree with the implementation of FDS in their school. This is supported by the results of the questionnaire (see 4.1) which shows that 62% of the 100 students agreed with the full day of school implementation and 38% disagreed and were also supported by records of interviews with researchers named Andi Nur Fadillah rahma yatte class XII IPA 1, he said to myself I really agree with the implementation of full day school, in my school because in addition to extra extracurricular hours for a full day my character really formed because of extra curricular hours, and I felt my fashion was more orderly and good

Abstract

This current study was a case study that aimed to analyze EYL teachers' classroom management performance at Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Likewise, this study also explored the root problem behind its' limitation. As part of the methodology, five teachers were involved in the observation. All the instrument components were validated throughout the SPSS Program analysis. After the instrument was validated, the classroom interaction process was observed and recorded three times. In addition, the interview session was also gained to ensure the observation result. All the data were analyzed descriptively. The data analysis showed that the EYL teachers in Kolaka Regency had attempted effective planning, teaching technique, and student/teacher relationship simultaneously but not comprehensively. The study also found that the EYL teachers at Kolaka Regency knew the meaning of pedagogic competence as the upstream of classroom management and the effort to implement it. However, they may not be optimal due to their teaching qualities ability. Therefore, the study recommended that there must be much appreciation for EYL teachers. The study also suggested accomplishing a similar study in a larger context to support the EYL teacher's welfare policy.
