Abstract

This research is aiming at discussing the benefits of learning English and Japanese languages simultaneously to cross-cultural competency. This article is also having a further discussion about the human resources development benefits gained from learning the two languages and cultures. English and Japanese are two languages that are famous as foreign languages for international business. It is because The United States, Japan, and the major economic forces of Western Europe are developed countries whose infrastructures and well-established financial markets are conducive to the operation and potential success of multinational corporations (MNCs). This study is a qualitative study with explanatory research as its method. The data gained by analyzing the perceptions drawn from the existing literature of various scholars documented in journals and books connected to Japanese and English languages, as well as human resources development issues. The results showed that learning Japanese and English simultaneously is also a good method in teaching the worker or students that will work in an international setting in having the comprehension of cross-cultural issues in general. The differences of those languages in terms of culture such as direct and indirect behavior in speaking, personal address system, and polite speech will become an example of understanding two different foreign language categories: high and low context cultures.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Jepang merupakan dua bahasa asing yang sama-sama banyak dipelajari oleh masyarakat Indonesia. Meskipun Bahasa Inggris dan Jepang sama-sama dipelajari dengan sangat luas di Indonesia,Permasalahan yang timbul adalah terkait dengan kurangnya penelitian yang membuktikan apakah banyak bahasa asing lain yang perlu atau bahkan memiliki banyak peminat di Indonesia. Sebagian besar penelitian terhadap pembelajaran bahasa asing hanya terfokus pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Untuk itulah artikel ini akan menelaah lebih jauh persepsi masyarakat khususnya mahasiswa terhadap bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Jepang sebagai bahasa asing di Indonesia. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memahami persepsi yang ada pada masyarakat di balik alasan peminatan terhadap Bahasa Inggris atau Bahasa Jepang. Sehingga diharapkan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Jepang sebagai bahasa asing ke depan dapat dikembangkan lebih maksimal berdasarkan kesulitan yang dirasakan. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan gambaran terhadap persepsi-persepsi masyarakat sebagai tolak ukur pemahaman masyarakat mengenai lulusan Bahasa asing khususnya Bahasa Inggris dan Jepang di Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode studi kasus terhadap 110 mahasiswa Sarjana Terapan Bahasa Asing pada Sekolah Vokasi, Universitas Diponegoro, Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah  persepsi mahasiswa terhadap lebih menjanjikan Bahasa Inggris dibandingkan Bahasa Jepang dalam hal pemilihan karir rupanya masih tinggi. Sedangkan, pemilihan Bahasa Jepang rupanya lebih didasarkan pada minat dan persepsi mahasiswa terhadap keindahan dan keunikan yang dimiliki oleh negara dan budaya Jepang.

Abstract

Di era globalisasi ini, pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk pustakawan adalah suatu keharusan. Hal ini dianggap penting bagi pustakawan ketika berkomunikasi dengan perpustakaan dan vendor asing, atau mengakses penelitian dan menghadiri konferensi sesuai dengan disiplin ilmu mereka. Studi Perpustakaan dan Informasi di Universitas Diponegoro sebagai objek penelitian ini juga diberikan Bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran wajib bagi mahasiswa di setiap semester. Kurikulum sebelumnya untuk Studi Perpustakaan dan Informasi di Universitas Diponegoro adalah: General English (semester pertama), English for Conversation (semester kedua), English for Librarian (semester ketiga), Translation (semester keempat), dan Speaking (semester kelima). Namun, terdapat sejumlah masalah terkait dengan desain kurikulum tersebut. Setelah mengajar selama satu semester pada kelas penerjemahan (translaton), dan berdiskusi dengan dosen lain di kelas terjemahan lainnya, beberapa masalah ditemukan. Masalah pertama adalah sebagian besar siswa tidak memahami kosakata terkait perpustakaan. Masalah kedua adalah siswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam mengatur kalimat untuk penerjemahan Bahasa Inggris - Indonesia. Kemudian, mengarah pada masalah ketiga yaitu dalam Rencana Pembelajaran Semester pada mata kuliah penerjemahan yang direncanakan untuk mengajarkan terjemahan Indonesia - Inggris dan terjemahan Inggris - Indonesia tidak dapat dicapai. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendesain ulang kurikulum Bahasa Inggris untuk Studi Perpustakaan dan Informasi berdasarkan masalah yang dihadapi di kelas. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah pengaturan kurikulum baru untuk mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris pada program studi Perpustakaan dan Studi Informasi. Desain kurikulum yang baru adalah sebagai berikut: General English (semester pertama), English Conversation (semester kedua), English – Indonesian Translation (semester ketiga), Indonesian – English Translation (semester keempat), dan English for Librarian (semester kelima).

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to help the learner as a multilingual student in improving her English by understanding a particular learner’s strength and weaknesses in speaking and writing. Single case study is used as a method. Steps in conducting this research are initial interview, analysis of spoken data, and also analysis of written data. The results of the interview, spoken and written data being discussed in detail using previous research and theories as literature research. Results of the research showed that some mistakes in her writing and speaking are influenced by her L1 or in this case Bahasa Indonesia.Keywords: single case study; speaking; writing; multilingual

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analysis the impact and challenges of covid-19 on learning system towards quality education. Currently, the World is facing pandemic COVID-19 which was experienced and appeared first in Wuhan-China around the end of 2019, it spread rapidly in the World. The COVID-19 pandemic has extraordinary impacts on education, economy, and other many sectors. However, the impacts will not only face and disturb only education sector, it will face other sectors including the future of work, healthcare, culture, economic, human relation among others. This paper collected data using qualitative method based on secondary information collected from various sources such as use of social media as document analysis methods, published and unpublished articles, newspapers, books, and reports of various education organizations, Universities sites and student forums. In this paper, the authors have analyzed the impact of the COVID- 19 on learning system.

Abstract

Autonomous learning shifts the focus from teaching to learning in relation to lifelong learning skills. This system helps students to get direct skills and knowledge from different sources rather than focusing on passing their examinations. However, lecturers remain as an advisor and guider. This paper describes the application of autonomous learning and why it is essential to be promoted massively again especially during and after the COVID-19 issue. This study aims to re-promote the practice of autonomous learning as an alternative strategy in learning system due to social distance policy resulted from pandemic covid-19 era. This research has used qualitative research method, both primary and secondary information were collected from various sources such as observation, reading published articles, newspapers, books, social media, universities reports and students’ forums, as well as document analysis on the previous research of autonomous learning. Results of the research shows that autonomous learning is a best alternative learning strategic in this tragedy pandemic covid-19 era. However, in order to facilitate and enable this learning student’s readiness is more important, this is because it is a self-learning approach. As the conclusion and suggestion, the development of digital service and online studies have increased and stimulated the use of this system.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sejak usia dini (English for Young Learner) saat ini tengah gencar dikampanyekan. Bahasa Inggris mulai diperkenalkan pada usia pendidikan terawal yakni pada tingkatan Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (PAUD). Permasalahan yang ada pada penelitian ini adalah kesulitan guru dalam membuat materi ajar yang sesuai dengan usia anak didik khususnya pada masa Kelompok Bermain (KB). Hal ini dikarenakan pada usia Kelompok Bermain, kemampuan verbal dan motorik anak-anak masih terbatas. Tujuan diadakannya penelitian ini adalah ini untuk membantu guru dalam menyusun model ajar kreatif, interaktif, dan inovatif bagi siswa untuk meningkatkan minat belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa pada usia Kelompok Bermain sesuai dengan kemampuan siswa dengan tidak melupakan esensi pembelajaran anak di usia dini yang menyenangkan seperti belajar sambil bermain. Metode penelitian yang diterapkan pada penelitian ini adalah qualitative-interpretative dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi dan wawancara serta teknik pendampingan pembuatan model ajar. Hasil penelitian mengacu pada kurikulum PAUD dan esensi pembelajaran PAUD yaitu bermain sambil belajar. Pemberian contoh pembuatan media pengajaran Bahasa Inggris pada Usia Kelompok Bermain di PAUD Anak Cerdas Ungaran memakai tema My Family dengan menggunakan metode menggambar dan mencocokan kartu.

Abstract

Applied English students as vocational future graduates must be prepared to be ready to work in international atmosphere directly after they are graduates. One of the most essential skills that should be learned is intercultural interaction. There are two problems that should be answered in this research. First, how is the previous implementation of CIP in Indonesia? Second is why CIP can be used as live laboratory for applied English students? The purpose of this research is to discuss and analyze the success of CIP in Indonesia and its potentials of Cultural Immersion Program (CIP) in becoming the live laboratory for Applied English students. Reflected on the increasing number of International Students in Indonesia, many Cultural Immersion Programs (CIP) held by some institutions to build interaction between local society and international students. This research is a qualitative study. The data is collected by asking 30 international students. This study found that the implementation of CIP in Indonesian is seen as something effective to learn about Indonesia by the international students who ever joined the program. Another finding is CIP could be a miniature of the working place for international tourism since it also has intercultural interaction as well as has same goal and principle with international tourism. Therefore, it could be a potential live laboratory for Applied English students in Vocational School at the university level.  Keywords: cultural immersion program; international student; international tourism; intercultural communication
