Abstract

Kompleksitas bahasa asing di era globalisasi menjadi ketakutan terbesar bagi seseorang ketika harus berkomunikasi dengan native speaker, begitupun sebaliknya. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan dalam pemahaman bahasa dan budaya yang dimiliki oleh setiap individu. Selain itu, kemampuan linguistik yang kurang mumpuni juga dapat menghambat komunikasi antar negara. Maka kerap kali dalam komunikasi antar global terjadi selisih paham dan menyebabkan kebingungan hingga keraguan dalam berkomunikasi. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman lintas budaya dan melatih kefasihan berbahasa Inggris dan Indonesia. Tim Universitas Komputer Indonesia (UNIKOM) telah melakukan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat di AIYA (Australia-Indonesia Youth Association) Cabang Jawa Barat. Kegiatan daring ini diikuti oleh 8 peserta, yakni 6 peserta dari Indonesia dan 2 peserta dari Australia untuk melatih kemampuan berbahasa mereka secara intensif melalui aplikasi Discord. Tolok ukur yang digunakan untuk kegiatan ini adalah peserta dapat berkomunikasi secara lisan dan fasih ketika memperkenalkan diri dan memperkenalkan destinasi wisata menggunakan Bahasa Inggris bagi orang Indonesia, dan Bahasa Indonesia bagi orang Australia. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah beberapa peserta mampu berkomunikasi lintas budaya secara fasih walau masih ada beberapa peserta yang perlu sedikit melatih kefasihan berbicara bahasa asing.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the Laskar Pelangi novel to the Dua Belas Pasang Mata novel to establish the narrative's building elements. This study employed the descriptive research method. The author describes the data obtained in a systematic, factual, and correct manner in order to discover facts and causative processes. The data is in the form of recorded documents that describe the novel's structure using literary analysis. As a result of this inquiry, Andrea Hirata's novel Laskar Pelangi contains 48 chapters and diverse themes that will be transferred. The key plot elements of this work are as follows: The story begins with the registration of students at a Muhammadiyah elementary school in Gantong village, Gantong sub-district, East Belitong, South Sumatra. To better comprehend the arrangement, there will be three steps: establishing the area, the period, and the community from the start to the last chapter; the action of this novel takes place in Belitong. This novel is set in several locales across Belitong. This novel uses the viewpoint as the primary character based on the role. Furthermore, the central theme of the novel Dua Belas Pasang Mata is the main character's sympathy and affection. Starting with a story about Miss Oishi's first visit to Tanjung village as a substitute teacher at a branch school and the reaction of the local people to her wearing western attire at the time. Thus, it is known that both novels have extraordinary social crisis stories.

Abstract

This current study examines university students’ attitudes towards their English accents and native English accents. Over the past few decades, the study of attitudes towards English accents has gained considerable attention owing to its multifaceted nature within the context of second language acquisition. The examination of such attitudes is known to be thought-provoking due to its entanglement with sociocultural, sociohistorical, language contact, and language learning experience factors. To achieve the study's objectives successfully, a semi-structured interview was conducted to gather rich and authentic data. The participants of the study, comprising first-year and third-year English literature students, were interviewed to elicit their views on English accents. The findings of the study reveal the presence of both positive and negative attitudes towards the participants' English accents, with a prevailing belief that so-called native English accents carry greater prestige than others. The implications of these findings have enriched the fields of applied linguistics and provide insights into future English Language Teaching, particularly from the English as an International Language perspective. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how conceptual metaphors are used by SZA in her song lyrics. Finding the source domain and target domain of the conceptual metaphors used in song lyrics is the main goal of this study. A descriptive qualitative research approach is used, which includes semantic analysis and conceptual metaphor mapping in song lyrics. The information used consists of five well-known SZA songs that were specifically chosen. The author defines conceptual metaphors in 5 lyrics from SZA's song. In the “Kill Bill” song there is 1 conceptual metaphor, in the “Snooze” song there are 2 conceptual metaphors, in the “The Weekend” song there 3 conceptual metaphors, in the “Nobody Gets Me” song there are 4 conceptual metaphors, and in the “Open Arms” song there is 1 conceptual metaphor. The research provides our understanding of how conceptual metaphor is used in song lyrics and shows the depth of creativity and artistic expression found in SZA's songs. The findings of this study may be helpful for future semantics and cultural studies research, as well as for developing a deeper understanding of both the complexity and the beauty of SZA's song lyrics. Abstract

This study focuses on the multicultural communication strategies employed by Indonesian postgraduate students during their study abroad experience at a university in Melbourne, Australia. Multicultural communication, as the main focus of this research, refers to communication between participants from different lingua-cultural backgrounds or nations, where their different conceptualizations and perspectives may lead to potential miscommunication. To achieve the research objective successfully, a qualitative method, specifically a semi-structured interview, was adopted to collect the data. 4 Indonesian postgraduate students who studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia were interviewed and asked about their cross-cultural misunderstanding experience during their sojourn period in Australia. They were also asked how they negotiated meaning and overcame language barriers when they communicated with local Australians or other international students. The collected data were analyzed and discussed in reference to strategies for multicultural communication theoretical framework. The findings of this study demonstrate that the respondents implemented a range of strategies to achieve successful intercultural communication, and the observation of others was deemed as one of the most effective methods. The outcomes of this research could provide a useful reference for students who plan to study abroad, especially in Melbourne, Australia, on the various strategies they can use to have effective communication across cultures.
